I had to reblog again because I also love to think about Tharkay in this context because he is one of those people who would have absolutely disappeared in history if not for his connection to William Laurence. He would have slipped into obscurity, barely known despite all he's done.

Except everyone is like. Wait wait wait so why did Laurence go live with this guy??? And then the painfully slow process of uncovering his work when many of his communications were probably burned out of necessity because he's a spy. They uncover him in small references, a dropping of his name here or there. Finally they find the letter where Laurence explains to Jane that Tharkay brought in 20 ferals and the sudden discovery that this man singlehandedly opened up the first negotiations between England and feral dragons.

And what the fuck do you MEAN he learned their language when no one else knew it? What do you MEAN his charts were ages ahead of everyone else's at this time?

Someone would uncover some piece of him and all of a suddenly historians would be salivating over him. There would be all kinds of academic works talking about power structures and the erasure of his contributions as a man of color. That man would become the subject of so many dissertations.

It kind of fucks with me that somebody killed ötzi the iceman because ötzi himself is like whatever but the silent presence of human hands that drew back the string of the bow that shot the arrow that killed him is crazy. the idea that there were various people involved in that situation and while one of them has had his last hours painstakingly reconstructed and studied to no end, the others now only exist insofar that an arrowhead had to get into his shoulder somehow. imagine killing someone and then suddenly your entire existence is only a vague shadow implied by the fact that you killed them. much to consider
