I fully believe that Maxwell gets 1 week into the new adventure, post-canon, and is unusually grumpy and irritable and he can't figure out why. He's happy! Hs's with his friends and the family he likes! Everything's fine!
And it takes Samwell pointing out that he seems to be, well, pining a little bit. Which - pining seems like a strong word, certainly, but now that Samwell's pointed it out, Maxwell can admit that he does miss Torse. Perhaps there's a bit of an ache in his chest like someone carved out his heart, but That's Normal.
Still. It wouldn't hurt to go back for a few days, to see how Torse is doing. To check in. See if he needs help. Just make sure everything is all right. So Maxwell splits off from the group and heads back to Zern, and Torse is delighted (and more than a little surprised) to see him.
And Maxwell, suddenly, doesn't feel so hollow anymore.
(Damn Samwell. He really always is so reasonable.)
