When I was in first grade, he took me shopping for new school clothes — which was huge because, as the youngest of six kids, I lived in hand-me-downs.

He bought me a little navy blue, polka dot dress with a Peter Pan collar and red alphabet buttons. But, on picture day, I lost one of the buttons on the playground. I had a total meltdown because my brother spent his own money to make sure I had this new dress and I ruined it. I was a mess, totally inconsolable.

My teacher was also the mom of one of my brother’s best friends. She told him, and he, my brother and the entire football team searched the playground after practice for my lost button. Which they actually found.

My brother sewed the button back on himself in the car all while trying to explain that he wouldn’t have been mad even if I did lose it.

It was just a button and a dress.

I wish that the information about the beginnings of their marriage could have been dropped earlier in the movie. Maybe Mary teases him about and we can see how guilty Robert feels about it and Cora consoles him about it. It would give the viewer who has not watched the show or anyone who has forgotten that information and set up his reaction later on.

As far as I Love Yous go I loved "You have been everything to me. Everything."!!! It felt to me like so much more than a simple I love you.

I think it’s interesting that we get more declarations of devotion from Robert then we ever do from Cora.

"Thank God for you anyway." In S3 when the money was lost

"Just know that I have loved you very, very much." At the Red Dinner

I think there is another example, but it isn't coming to mind

The closest I can think of Cora saying something similar is in the first season when she assures Robert that he has made her happy.

Even with that disonance, I loooooved this scene. I think it's my favourite Cobert scene of all time.

Here is another declaration of love from Robert, and Cora acknowledging Robert's love:

"Two people who love her (Isis) and each other...", when Isis is dying in their bed.

I actually really think “Remember, I’ve loved you from the start” is very moving coming from Cora who NEVER tells anyone she loves them, except for Mary in S1 (only after Mary says ‘I know you love me.’ And Cora says, ‘I do love you.’) Even when she tells Robert in S4 that she cherishes him, it’s balanced with “rescue my hopeless brother” to sort of soften the sincerity.

It’s interesting that nearly every other upstairs character in the show tells someone they love them, usually explicitly so. Not our resident American. (I’m trying to think of downstairs characters…does Mrs Hughes? I don’t think, which would be a lovely parallel.) anyway, I digress.

I think the line is Cora’s very pained way of saying if he thinks their being separated by death is hard for him, that he “can’t bear it,” he should look at it from her perspective because she’s loved him for longer than he has loved her. The idea that she won’t have him for much longer hurts her more than it could hurt him. “If I can bear it, you can.”

What I always find touching — whether this is Julian’s genius (lol) or HB and EM’s understanding of their characters — is that Robert totally knows this about her! He knows she doesn’t verbalize her emotions, especially love. I think of his reactions to when she actually is sincere and how he always seems a bit taken aback . Her line of “he thought it, and he was mistaken” when she gets choked up about Mr Bricker / Robert in S5 makes Robert visibly deflate. The line we’re talking about, her “I loved you from the start” almost startles him! His eyes go big, like the words are dunking him in ice water. Her other line from the movie “and then love came … we have been happy, haven’t we?” when she begins to cry, Robert is so moved he gathers her up and kisses her.

If any line is the most sincere, moving line in that scene, I personally think it’s that last one.

Julian Fellowes, the creator and producer of Downton Abbey, was also in attendance. Since the end of the TV show in 2016, there have been two feature films, one released in 2019, while the sequel came out in May 2022. The Crown's Lesley Manville, former The Good Doctor actress Antonia Thomas, and more famous faces were also at the star-studded wedding. (People)

In 4th Place with 17 votes is "Good, now kiss me" from S4

In 5th Place with 13 votes is "Let's end on a happy note" from the S2 Christmas Special. (this is my personal 2nd favorite, I love his little chuckle before and what he does with his eyes afterwards. Another reason why this kiss is one of my tops is bc S2 was really rough on their relationship and this feels very healing. they have just done the more publicly appropriate kiss-on-cheek and then he decided that that wasn't enough)

In 6th Place with 7 votes is The Pregnancy from S1 (This one also has a special place in my heart because it is just so sweet and joyful and fluffy)
