Thirty years ago, I found myself behind the lens photographing a 26 year old artist from Brooklyn whose debut album would go on to become one of the most important records in hip hop history.
Embracing the tradition of fine photography, creativity ruled the moment and the vision was clear. We trusted our instincts and captured a cover image that became a timeless classic. It spoke volumes. The image is a metaphor for so many things; quality, mystery, family, presence and power.
As a photographer, I have always believed that the most meaningful images are the ones that define and preserve a moment before anyone realizes its significance.
I’m honored and grateful to have documented this important chapter of his remarkable story that has left an indelible mark. Three decades later, its influence can still be heard in the music, seen in the culture, and felt by generations who continue to discover it for the first time.
