its crazy how people deny the 10th Doctor’s shitty treatment of Martha was at least partially the result of anit-Black writing and misogynoir!! they’ll literally be like “no it wasn’t racism uwu he was just sad about Rose” my sibling in christ, even if that were the sole reason for the 10th Doctor behaving the way he did, that is still NOT any kind of reason enough to treat another person like that. “i am sad about my ex so i am literally going constantly compare you to her to your face and insult you by saying you’re not as good as her and yell at you for even trying to ask me about it” IS straight up insanely boarderline abusive behaviour that isn’t excuseable. and for y’all to pretend this was not at least escalated by Martha being Black is utter lunacy. ESPECIALLY when you saw how the 10th Doctor treated Donna in the special BEFORE he met Martha and he treated her with NOWHERE NEAR with the same level of vitriol. he even asks Donna to travel with him straight away. He kept “just one trip and that’s it”-ing Martha and he didn’t even give martha a TARDIS key until episode 8 of THE SEASON WHERE SHE WAS THE COMPANION. the only GLARING difference between Donna and Martha IS their race. again, the way Martha was written compared to the other companions of that era was very clearly racialised and this includes the Doctor being mad at her for [checks notes] not being Rose which is NOT SOMETHING HE DID WITH ANYONE ELSE. it’s a very clear and obvious to anyone, especially Black folks and poc, that RTD had an unconscious double standard in the way he wrote Black companions and I am so TIRED of people trying to justify the 10th Doctor treating Black people (i.e. Mickey as well) like shit “because of Rose” as if that’s even a fucking decent argument to make.

I’m really annoyed with the internet woobification of batman 2022’s riddler because it fully misses the point of the entire movie to almost concerning degree

Ok. So. Basically what it comes down to is that The Batman (2022)’s Riddler is a fairly obvious (at least to me)  stand-in for the very real-world phenomena of young white men who feel isolated and personally victimized by society, who turn to the internet to feel less alone, and who are preyed upon by domestic hate groups who validate and weaponize their feelings and turn them into genuine white supremacists and neo-nazis and armed insurgents who march on Washington DC to violently protest democracy. Initially, the Riddler targets the corrupt, using the internet as a means to further spread his rhetoric to disconnected white men like him, but by the end of the movie he’s bombing flood walls and sending militarized followers to assassinate Bella Réal, a young black mayoral candidate who wishes to bring real systemic change to Gotham. This reveals the truth and the hypocrisy of his mission, which is that he’s not really trying to effect change—he’s lashing out and tearing down a world that he feels has victimized him, personally, and he’s doing this while trying to pull others into his violence. He’s a normal looking guy, with a normal job. A nobody. Someone who could be anyone, who could be someone you know, and meanwhile he’s online encouraging paramilitary violence and committing acts of domestic terrorism. This is how hate groups function in real life. It’s not a subtle allegory. The fact that a truly alarming proportion of internet fandom has, after seeing this movie, managed to miss the very obvious messaging and choose to reduce him to just a funny little guy who has a crush on Batman and just wants a little attention is, frankly, concerning to me because of what it means for peoples’ ability recognize hate group recruitment in real life.

i want more characters that are just dudes. sure i love the ones with clear drive and complex backstories but like. nothing beats someone who just decided they want to be there anyways, even with no real stake in the game. the growth that comes with realizing that just because it didn’t start out personal doesn’t mean you can walk away… you can’t get that kinda narrative with talent or angst! a win for the bland community
