Some time in the future when they are both in their twenties Jon and Damian get invited to a wedding. It's the first time in a long while they are both single at the same time, and neither is looking forward to going without a partner. So, Damian jokingly suggests that they go together, and to his surprise Jon agrees.
At the wedding, a lot of people comment on how they "finally got together" and how they've "been expecting this since you both were kids." They are baffled because 1) they are just there together as friends and 2) they really thought they had hidden their crushes better.
The thing is, they have had feelings for each other for years, but the timing has never been right, and neither of them has wanted to risk their friendship by attempting to take it further, because frankly they are both really bad at relationships, in different ways.
Jon hates being single (or rather, he hates being alone) so he tends to jump from relationship to relationship very quickly, get too emotionally invested too fast, and then crash and burn spectacularly.
Damian on the other hand has only had a few relationships, all of them developed slowly with the intent to last long-term. The problem is that once Damian finds someone that he believes cares about him, he will forgive them for practically anything. He won't trust them, but if they lie to him or, in one particular partner's case, cheat on him, he will primarily blame himself for not realising it rather than them for doing it in the first place.
So both of them are hesitant to try a relationship with each other, but as the wedding goes on, all the well wishes start to make them wonder. So when Jon nervously asks him to dance, Damian says yes. It's just a slow dance on a crowded dancefloor, but it feels right, and it's a start.
