by the way, this post was inspired by some writing i was doing last night where i wrote "that that" and got so mad that i had to take a break for the rest of the evening

it's understandable that that "that that" that ended your writing session would inspire a post like that

Speaking of medieval history, it's fun how the popular accounts are all "the peasantry disliked nobles, but typically loved the King and attributed any harmful decisions to bad advisors", and then the rare examples of surviving testimony from actual peasants are like "I hope the King literally explodes".

People assume, wrongly, that medieval peasants were uniquely stupid and subservient to the political order. This is not true. The truth is that chainmail armor is really hard to get through, and when the guy collecting you taxes is on a horse in full chain, weidling a sword that can kill you from roughly any position, it's hard to argue against unfair taxation models.
