I saw people discussing warrior princess Yeesha earlier, and it made me want to share the prettiness that is comfy layers Yeesha
Concept art by Josh Staub, taken from endofages.patchallel.com
Aaah, I love seeing character/costume concept art before it was reigned in! I too am often the victim of the “this fabric is going to be too much of a pain to rig/animate” parameter - I just had to redesign a bustled overskirt into pants, the wound is particularly fresh - so it’s always nice to see I’m not alone.
INCONVENIENTLY LAYERED AND COMPLEX COSTUMES FOR EVERYONE
I finally took the time to photograph my vintage dip pen nib collection, and I need to share with you all how wonderful and diverse their designs are.
These two are my favorite. Just look at them! One of them is named Gorille and the other Mephisto, but to me they're little pumpkins.
And of course you gotta love the Pinocchio nib. You get to write with the nose of a tiny guy! Just not something you get to do anymore.

A Japanese stab-bound notebook, inspired by Yeesha’s journals scattered throughout the Great Shaft in Myst 5. C:
I would have loved to have been able to get the binding as close to how the booklets are portrayed in the game, but with my current level of experience, I’m not even certain it’d be possible to bind them in such a way. Stab binding is pretty darn close though, I think.
The covers are cream-colored cardstock with naturally colored muslin and green linen bookcloths for the outside, and lokta paper for the inside. The book is sewn together with 7-ply white linen thread.
I broke a needle trying to get it put together, lol.

Ever play Myst? Ever look into the backstory? The D’ni were a race from our world, though no one ever met them, with the Art of writing linking books to other worlds. Pretty much everything about them is fascinating, but let’s start with their written language.

*slides in* The Navajo people traditionally live in New Mexico and call themselves the Din’e, pronounced the same as D’ni. Also the Star Fissure is straight out of the Din’e origin myth. So to me the D’ni are and always will be Native American in appearance.
So is the Stranger, because there’s no reason for a white person to be in New Mexico in the early 1800s.
are you shitting me
THAT IS AWESOME I NEVER KNEW THAT
Also about the holographic imager, I always thought that was a D’ni thing that Gehn was using. Is there a source that it was from Keta? That would also be interesting.
Yup! It’s a bit obtuse, but from Gehn’s jab journal:
“The construction of the imagers has proceeded without fault. It is interesting to see how easily I’ve been able to adapt the D’ni technology to mimic that of the Amad; in some ways the similarities between the two cultures was striking. I wonder if perhaps there had been communication or commerce between the two cultures in earlier times; maybe Keta’s people were even descendants of the D’ni. It pleases me to think so.”
So Zib’s recent mention of Spyder got me thinking back. Anyone remember the Riven Journals?
[…]
So I have a love-hate relationship with those journals. I hadn’t played Riven yet, and was frantic to do so. Whether these puzzles made sense to me or not, they were absolutely SWIMMING in Riven-esque atmosphere, and did a swell job of tiding me over until the happy day that Dad came home from a trip to Staples with the game that would become my home-away-from-home for the next several months. ^_^
And I cannot begin to express how RELIEVED I was to discover that there was no mag-lev puzzle in the game. @_@
No, wait, what? What are these Riven journals you speak of? :o
The Riven Journals were a sort of pre-launch hype generator on the official Riven website run by Broderbund. The site consisted of a bunch of puzzles and a huge pile of D’ni apocrypha. They were something I missed out on at the time too (believe it or not, heh), because we didn’t get internet access at home until a year after Riven came out.
RIUM+ (who else?) painstakingly restored them a few years ago (like, going so far as to track down the original creators for help). He has more info about the journals and his restoration work on his website, and you can go try to solve them if you want. Be aware, the thing does require Java, so that may give you some headaches thanks to how persona non grata the Java Web Plugin has become in browsers of late.
