We all know Jinshi had a crush over Maomao since the day she grimaced at him, but I believe the moment he gave her his hairpin is the moment he truly fell for her.

In my opinion, he didn't fall for her because she's a beauty in disguise, rather her reasons what made an impact. Surely he was captured by her bare face, but what left an impression is her story.

He looked unsettled after hearing what she's been through, as if it's his fault that he allowed this to begin with. In that moment, he expressed a genuine reaction of dismay and compassion. As expressed in the series, the hairpin in general could mean affection, but it can also mean I'll look out for you.

Their conversation at the garden party is one of my favorite early moments of the series.
