Apollo: Sister, what are you the goddess of?
Artemis: *lounging by a spring on piles of deerskin surrounded by three dozen naked girls with a dead pan expression* Virginity.
“Heracles, they’re lesbians”.
Note that the concept of “virginity” in Ancient times merely meant “unmarried”, and had nothing to do with sexual activity. Some priestesses were “virgins” because they chose (or were committed to) a life of worship, but it was merely a question of social status, not of personal choice or practice. Of course, one can suppose that this lifestyle would be rather attractive for lesbians. So when Artemis is said to be the Goddess of Virgins, it is meant to be understood as “Goddess of Unmarried Women”, or, quite possibly literally, of lesbians. (It’s only Christianity that reframed the concept of virginity to mean “never had sex”. Many ancient religions has “Virgin goddesses”, which symbolized feminine power, and in this case too it meant “untied to a man”, or “whole for herself”)
good energies
Inktober is here!! Like last year, I’m going to do my own version: My goal is to make 31 ink drawings and I’ll be posting them one per day, but since I’m sometimes too busy working (drawing other illustrations) the entire day, I’ll be doing a few extra ones on the weekends instead. :) Oh and I won’t be using any prompt lists. Finally updated my letter board for the first time since Christmas. 😆🌿
[A tweet that reads: One of the great epiphanies of my lifetime was realizing that I disliked so many female characters because they were created by men who didn’t like women.]
Winter wolf syndrome
I recently started following the zventenze blog because they’ve been posting a lot of Eastern European winter festivals and costumes, which introduced me to some of the stylin’est, greatest imagery I never knew about. SO GOOD.
These remind me of my grandmother’s sets of unedited folklore from around the world, which captured my imagination as a child. The stories were always scarier, more surreal, and more beautiful than their post-Victorian retellings. My favorites – regardless of origin – gave me this same cozy-creepy feeling.
First three are Bulgarian kukeri, or mummers.
Next two are New Year’s bear dancers in eastern Romania, (which I’ve seen posted everywhere but only just learned the context.)
Last two are Kurants from the Kurentovanje Festival in Slovenia.
I think my favorite is the lady smoking a cigarette with her mask flipped up – it’s easy to forget that there are people under all that, engaging in very important ritual traditions. I love mummers, bear dancers, and other darkness-driver-offers. :D Thanks @danceswchopstck for linking me!
Berserker smoke break.
Always reblog kukeri
