This live capture, filmed version of the Tony-winning, sung-through Broadway musical reimagining of the ancient Greek myths of Orpheus, Eurydice, Hades, and Persephone maintains its power and entertainment. Thanks to singer-songwriter Anaïs Mitchell's creative blend of American folk music and jazz, the expressive choreography heightens the classic tragedy in all the right ways. Its five principal cast members return to the memorable roles they originated to capture three combined live stage performances edited together. Hadestown's eerie spirit of myth and music reimains well paired to the dynamic political romance at the core.

Constance Wu and Mark O'Brien star as married astrophysicists on the run after they make a groundbreaking extraterrestrial discovery. Shot in North Bay, the Canadian sci-fi thriller is a low-key but efficiently told road movie with scientific themes about the potential first contact with an advanced species from elsewhere in the universe. It's a rather minimal, character-driven thriller that teases a greater, more ambitious adventure before homing in on the central crux of keeping one's family safe from unknown threats in a dangerous world.

[It] reframes the thousands-of-years-old myth to make you believe in its continued relevance as a historical stand-in for our contemporary fall of civilization.

Comedian Will Ferrell continues to mine his trademark dim but confident athlete schtick for another unlikely sports comedy, but in episodic form this time. We follow his washed-up PGA golfer on an ill-advised comeback tour. Things play out more like the sad dad genre of comedies, where his Lonnie Hawkins reflects on his past failures by trying to recapture his lost accomplishments. Surprisingly, the sports series detours into more of its interpersonal relationships before turning into a full-blown dysfunctional family dramedy. As a series, it's a middling effort that barely has enough of Ferrell's inherent charm and commitment to the bit.

Disney+'s special presentation is a punishing summation of the vigilante antihero portrayed across media by co-writer/executive producer Jon Bernthal. It's a brutal, John Wick-type exploration of PTSD and grief told through sheer violence.

For a breakneck story largely about individual characters questioning their own beliefs and morals on whether to expose our collective knowledge, there's plenty of action, car chases, and sci-fi special effects to dazzle us.

8-2 loss vs. Eugene Emeralds [Saturday, July 4, 2026]

Newcomers Maya da Costa and Myra Molloy star in the singer's own film adaptation of her 2023 novel, inspired by her pop song of the same name. It's a low-key queer coming-of-age romance that speaks to common experiences of first love and same-sex attraction denial. Despite its small-scale, intimate story, the film manages to evoke universal feelings of teenage insecurity, sexual curiosity, and navigating romantic feelings. Zach Braff, as a deadbeat turned unexpected single dad, gives a refreshingly earnest performance.
