Development Log #1: CG Redraws, Character Customization, Writing Updates, and Ko-fi Goal
Hello, Luminas!
Welcome to the very first official development log for Backstage Infatuation!
In this post, we'll be sharing some of the progress that's been happening behind the scenes over the past month. We've divided everything into four sections so you can easily follow along with the latest updates.
Part 1: Prologue CG Redraws (and Sprite Improvements!)
It's officially been a year since the game's release, and our main artist, Iverelle, has grown a lot since then. Because of this, we're currently redrawing the original prologue CGs to better match the game's updated art style and overall visual quality.
We're also giving all of the character sprites a major overhaul!
Fun fact: when the original sprites were created, Iverelle wasn't familiar with layered image systems yet. Instead of using a modular sprite setup, we ended up with countless individual variations of the same character. While it worked at the time, it definitely wasn't the most efficient approach!
The new sprite system will help reduce file size, improve organization, and open the door for more customization options in future updates. New outfits? Alternate hairstyles? Additional expressions? The possibilities are much more flexible now.
We'd also like to give a huge thank you to our team member, Luna, for assisting with the line art for the updated sprites that will be featured in an upcoming update. Your help has been invaluable!
Part 2: Character Customization Preview
This preview was previously shared on Tumblr, but we'd love to showcase it here as well!
For those who may not know, Backstage Infatuation will feature character customization, including selectable pronouns, along with the option to play as the default protagonist, Haesol.
So far, Iverelle has completed 10 outfit designs, each with their own color variations. That's already a lot of options to mix and match! Of course, this is only the beginning, and we plan to continue expanding the wardrobe with even more outfits in future updates to give players greater freedom when customizing their character.
Part 3: Writing Update
Writing development has been progressing steadily over the past month!
One of our current priorities is revising the Prologue. While the overall story remains the same, we're making significant improvements to the writing, pacing, dialogue, and presentation to create a stronger introduction to the world of Backstage Infatuation. These revisions will help establish the characters more effectively and provide a smoother experience for both new and returning players.
At the same time, work on Chapter 1 has been going very well. Writing progress has been steady, and we're excited with how the chapter is shaping up so far. Alongside the story itself, we're also implementing features such as character customization support and the Affection Point system, making Chapter 1 a much larger and more ambitious update than anything we've released before.
There's still plenty of work ahead, but we're happy with the progress being made and can't wait to share more previews as development continues!
Part 4: Ko-fi Goal for Backgrounds
Finally, we'd like to ask for your support!
As work on Chapter 1 continues, one of our biggest upcoming expenses is the creation of background assets for the game. To help cover these costs, we've opened a Ko-fi goal dedicated to background production.

The first time he met your puppy, he was a little afraid that he'd get attacked by the little thing. He has his own share of past contact with cats...
But he was pleasantly surprised when the doggy, instead of biting him, just woofed at him and tried jumping into his arms. Oh.
Cats are different from dogs, it seemed. Dogs are way too trusting... But so is Pierrot. He was very ecstatic to know that the one thing close to you is already so attached to him too!
From that point forward, that's his child too. He doesn't fully get why you call it your child, but he doesn't care. He shares the sentiment. It's now his too!
You yourself never expected for Pierrot to take such a huge liking to your pet... But you're honestly glad! Pierrot is generally bigger than most humans... So you were a little afraid that your puppy would bolt away from him in fear.
I think Pierrot would be super soft with your pet. Like... He'd take it on walks, buy it some treats... Jester suddenly wonders why there's a dog bed in his tent. (It's there just in case you decide to visit with your furry friend!)
He still loves you more than anything... But now part of that platonic affection belongs to the dog too lol.
I think he'd never allow the doggy to get closer to Harlequin. Honestly, he'd probably threaten Harlequin.
It's fun watching Pierrot get cuteness aggression when he stumbles upon you and the puppy sitting together on the sofa. Let him join! He brought blankets!
If your puppy ever yipped at Harlequin, Pierrot would probably back the doggy up, like the puppy was a rapper who just roasted his rival.
"Yes! Tell that green bitch!" "What the fuck-?"
Harlequin
Meeting your cat wasn't on his list of wishes... But it was whatever.
Their first meeting was... Strange, safe to say. Your cat and him were just staring at each other. You were scared that your cat would scratch him or something, knowing Harlequin's personality... But instead, the most unexpected thing happened.
Harlequin... And your cat... Were getting along? Two rage-baiters recognized each other, it seemed.
Now, Harlequin would be lying if he said that he was entirely nonchalant about meeting your cat... Honestly, prior to the two of them meeting each other; Harlequin was so excited that he missed the meeting with Jester. (Which he'd regret later, Jester would make sure he would regret it.)
I think Harlequin is a certified cat lover.
Harlequin and your cat would sometimes be so in sync that it's scary honestly.
That's not your cat anymore, that's his cat.
Harlequin would say he doesn't care about your cat, but still buy it toys/treats/clothes.
I think it'd be really funny if Harlequin secretly taught your cat to attack Pierrot on sight. He'd be in your room... Sitting on your bed with your cat in front of him... Holding up a picture of Pierrot and pointing at it. Teaching it to viciously attack.
Ticket Taker hates to see Harlequin and the cat coming to the circus with you in tow. Promise to clean up after these two, yeah?
Jester
He never cared for your pet when you mentioned it. So what? He just likes you, not your pet. Who cares about some bird?
That's until he actually sees the bird. It's magnificent. He likes the bird's wings and its colors... That bird screams power, and that's exactly what Jester likes.
He found himself researching some things about the species of that particular bird... He knows that The Doctor is a bird, but it felt weird to ask him something like that. So he did his own research.
Jester wasn't just doing it because he found himself adoring the bird... Secretly. He was also doing it to... What? Impress you? Perhaps.
Jester honestly surprised himself with how much he was doing just to know more about some stupid bird.
The bird itself was nonchalant about Jester... But grew to like him over time when it found out that Jester doesn't have any malicious intent with you.
It'd be hilarious to catch Jester trying to have a conversation with your bird... And it'd be something silly.
Ooh... If it would be a parrot, I think it'd be super cute if Jester kept repeating the same phrases in front of the bird, just so the parrot would repeat them to you.
"I adore you, [Name]. You're doing a good job... Such a good human you are."
And you'd instantly know who would be the culprit lol.
Ticket Taker
Ticket Taker isn't very fond of most animals. Mostly because they tend to be messy and needy... And The Ticket Taker is all about cleanness and order.
But he's all talk. The moment you wanted to show him your hamster? He was down for it. (Folded like a lawn chair for you, but he tried not to be too obvious.)
Hamsters are small creatures, so the moment Ticket Taker saw your pet... His first thought went like; "oh. It's small. It probably doesn't do so much mess."
Oh how absolutely WRONG it was of him to think that so foolishly. He almost immediately regretted it after he found out how much you pay for the hamster. Jesus Christ.
You're lucky he loves you so much.
After their first meeting, Ticket Taker did his best to ignore it and only focus his attention on you. But hamsters were quite needy for attention...
So when you ask him to hold your hamster?
He did so reluctantly... But the moment he holds it in his hands, he notices little things. The color of its fur, the size of the thing... Suddenly, he feels what humans would call... Cuteness aggression?
The little pet was actually cute.
And that was absolutely unacceptable! This was manipulation. This was criminal offense. This was... Soft. Fuck.
He came around to your hamster. Finding likeness to it... You sometimes even caught him buying your hamster a toy.
He's never gonna forget when you teased him about it.
The Doctor
The moment you told The Doctor about your pet spider, he was immediately interested. Way more interested than you probably expected... But he kept asking questions about it, until you gave in and decided to introduce the two to one another.
Of course, before he met the spider, The Doctor decided to read up on some information about spiders. It came in handy, safe to say.
Seeing The Doctor's strange nature and your spider's nonchalance made them almost immediately friends.
Nowadays, it's like the spider belongs to The Doctor. But of course, The Doctor makes sure to remind you that the magnificent creature still belongs to you.
The Doctor is so freakishly tall, that the spider was at first pretty scared of him... But came around when The Doctor showed it gentleness and kindness.
The Doctor couldn't help but buy it a tiny bed with its name on it.
You're honestly just glad they like each other's company.
I think it'd be cute if The Doctor had a special place for the spider in his tent! Like a little corner, decorated just for your visits with the spider.

Itโs later in the afternoon. You sit in your seat at peace, quietly humming away as your other classmates are packing their things.ย
As you watch the others leave, you decide to sit for a bit longer. Whatโs the rush? you think, leading you to lazily stand and place your notebook in your handheld bag.ย
Right as youโre about to leave campus for the lunch period, you hear loud yelling right by the boysโ locker room. You think back to all the times youโve heard yelling and fights over there; after all, itโs the one blind spot of the terrible cameras they have set up in the school.
Normally, you pay no mind to it- most of the time, itโs just kids horsing around, causing a ruckus. Something you REALLY donโt want to get involved with, like I mean, you just know high school boys donโt wash their hands.
As you go to walk by, you hear something that makes you pause right in your tracks.
โYouโre disgusting. Watching us change like a freak, huh? Guess they were right when they called you a fag, right?โ
Everything stops for a moment, you slowly turn your head towards the group of boys, and one of them catches you staring.ย
โHey, girlie.โ One of them sneers at you, his eyes lighting up at the chance to talk to you. Youโre well known for being in the musical recently, as your performance had quite an impact on anyone who watched.ย
Your jaw ticks at how friendly he seems to be with you, as if he wasnโt just throwing around a slur at kids.
Youโre about to stomp over there and give those boys a piece of your mind when you notice a boy sitting on the ground. Heโs covering an eye, though heโs looking at you with the other. Unbeknownst to you, heโs been looking at just you since the moment you arrived.ย
Glancing at the boy, you deduce that heโs the victim. Heโs got blond hair with seemingly brown eyes, and a little bit on the chubby side, with a small, rounded face to match. The blond has papers surrounding him, and you wonder just how long theyโve been at this.
It seems like youโve been staring for too long, as the boy winces and attempts to stand - though these attempts were futile, since a brunet knocks him right back down with his foot.
โDamn fatass, you hurt my foot there. You gonna apologize, or what?โย
At that, you finally put some motion in your step.
The brown-haired boy turns to look at you because of the sudden movement, but he doesnโt get very far before a wild punch is thrown directly at his face. He sprawls out over the floor, the punch knocking the wind out of him.ย
The other boys turn to look at you with a moment of shock, before anger registers properly on their faces. It doesnโt take long before the boys start to come after you, but it takes even quicker for them to land on their asses- donโt they know who you are?ย
After an utter defeat, the boys scramble to leave with their tails between their legs, as blood is spewing from the brunet's nose.ย
Your focus is quickly diverted at the sound of the blond boy on the ground, coughing, his hand still covering his eye.
ย โOh my god, are you okay?โ
Panicking, you do a quick check over him as you speak, checking for any major injuries. Your mother was quick to teach you first aid, after all.
โCan you show me your other eye, please? Iโd like to see the damage,โ you stutter, โif thatโs okay, of course.โ
He looks up at you, and the utter reverence in his gaze knocks the wind out of you. Imagine if he gave you that look with BOTH eyesโฆ
You blink, and he removes his hand - a gasp quickly leaving you at the sight.ย
His eyes were beautiful.
And you knew, from that moment, you would never forget him.
I think my main struggle with Lucifer comes from how OM frames his treatment of Mammon. The game feeds into cartoonish comedy, reminding us that demons are tougher and donโt follow human morality, but once you take out the humor, a lot of what Lucifer does looks straight-up abusive. He is the one in charge, and that power difference makes it harder to laugh off because heโs a canon sadist that desperately wants control to the point where he is willing to literally kill a child and his own brother and tries to kill the MC several times.
Development doesnโt happen overnight, and I didnโt expect Season 1 Lucifer to suddenly be a better person. But as the story moved into later seasons, something needed to change. If you have Mammon in Season 2 say he feels targeted by Lucifer in a supposed serious moment, then you have to address that honestly. Otherwise, what was the point? Why have Mammon express his pain if the game wonโt explore that in a way that matters?
The โsolutionโ to these problems is just, โthey care about each other.โ It doesnโt actually fix anything. Mammon still feels targeted, and Lucifer doesnโt change.
If the story is going to highlight toxic behavior in a serious way, it canโt just brush it off when shit hits the fan. That inconsistency is why so many players see Lucifer as abusive. The writing never commits.

Ray wanted to bash his face on the nearest wall, so he can wake up from this weird dream. This has to be a dream. It has to be. You shouldn't be here. You shouldn't be in this damned building of NAHA's. So, why are you here, sitting on one of the high chairs of their meeting rooms like you have always been there?
Ray thought he must've really deluded himself into missing you to the point he's imaginingโdreaming of you standing near him. Your presence a bright emphasis amongst the lackluster figured and lights of the room. Two years since you suddenly disappeared from villainy and since then he's driven crazy by your absence. Now, you're at NAHA, smiling kindly at these undeserving strangers.
Ray, for himself, felt rigid in his position. He's frozen in shock at the dizzying sight of you. Seeing you again felt like he was a drowning man clinging to a boat for his lifeline in the middle of deep ocean. He was almost this close snapping at his handlers for summoning him while he's trying to find you. At the same time, he's also nervous shitless. He didn't even have time to prepare himself to meet you. If this happened in a different situation, he would've come up with a plan to make you his. Probably sweep you off your feet as Binary Star or if this damned world allows, he may even have the chance to catch your attention as Ray. But then againโas much as he desperately craves for a genuine connectionโhe would rather look at Binary Star than at himself.
So, of all chances and places that you and Ray could meet, why at NAHA? Why through NAHA? His past attempts of searching you has been fruitless, to see you here was a mix of relief and trepidation. Ever since the moment he stumbled upon you petting that cat, shattering and making him question his ideals, he got so fixated on you to the point that when you disappeared, he realizes how much dependent he is to you. So when he searched for you, he gets to see you again although in a compromising situation.
He wanted to check on Herschel, to see what the hell just ran in handler's mind that prompted him to arrange Ray to meet you. How did Herschel even know who you are? What is your connection to NAHA? So many questions left Ray restless and he doesn't like it. Not even one bit.
"I would like you to formally meet Binary Star. He is the Top 1 Hero here in US.โ
โBinary Star, this is...โ
Herschel introduced him to you and you to him. Professional, stoic, and everything. But Ray knew too well of how the gears turn in his handler's head, to serve under NAHA's purpose no matter how inhumane the process would go. Actually, Ray was about to have his two days off yesterday as he requested (demanded) but during the day, Herschel informed Ray that they have to cut off his day off because he has an important audience. He also told Ray that he must dress up and play pretend as Binary Star again much to the younger man's dismay. It took many strings to be pulled, so Ray would agree. I mean, who would be happy being reminded that you have work to do in the middle of your day off and importantly, your day off is canceled?
โHello! Nice to meet you, Mr. Binary Star!โ You finally speak up from across the room, your cheery voice snapping him from his deep trance. Just being recognized by you, he already feels something warm stirring in his chest. He can forget about the meeting, for all he cares, now that you're here. NAHA skipped him from all the trouble and did him a favor bringing you to him although he didn't like that you're connected to them.
As much as he's thrilled to see you, he's expected to act as the 'shining' hero, Binary Star. But then again, why does he have to pretend being all sunshine and rainbows if he's already elated seeing you once again?
Binary Star exclaims with a big smile, โGreetings, star! It's nice to meet you too!โ
It's more than nice, actually. He never expects that a day would come where he won't feel irritated interacting with people as Binary Star. But then again, you're no regular people. You're his star. His saving grace. Those smiles he gives to people as Binary Star are all fakeโstaged. But with you and to you, even as Binary Star, it is genuine.
Reading your mind, he could tell that you were a bit confused by the name. That proved further when you blushed bright red in front of him. And the sight stirred something within him, but that could be dealt with later when he's alone. He chuckled in amusement as you avoided eye contact and fidgeted the hem of your skirt. Your bright yet quiet nature felt overwhelmed by the name. For someone who's a nervous mess underneath earlier when surprised by your sudden appearance, Ray's quite bold. It seems that he really missed you, Star.
Maybe Mr. Binary Star just tends to call people 'star'?
He tilts his head slightly, hearing your thoughts deny the name he gave you. Finally close to you, he can get to know you more. You seem to have a low self-esteem, describing yourself as just an ordinary person. But, no. He doesn't call anyone star except you. He might've done some fanservice after being so forced by NAHA, but not even an ounce of genuineness can be seen there.
Too soon. Ray winces internally, thinking he might've messed up by calling you Star too soon. Perhaps if he had the time to rehearse his first words to you, he wouldn't have acted this way. No amount of faked pr practice could prepare him to meet you.
"Ehem.โ His handler, Herschel, interjected unfortunately. And it effectively interrupted the moment. Ray was already beginning of planning how to grow closer to you without NAHA's intervention. Either way, his handler wouldn't call for a meeting and have him play as Binary Star without a purpose.
Herschel, that middle-aged man, smiled triumphantly seeing that he's got both of your attention now. โNow that you've officially met Binary Star, Y/N, you get to understand the goals of NAHA.โ
I'm sorry, what?
What were they trying to make you see or rather, understand?
Actually, Herschel didn't gave him a brief agenda of this supposed meeting yesterday; he only told Ray to arrive in Binary Star costume for no reason. Ray, on the present, was bewildered and wanted to intervene. He wanted to know what's going on even if he has to act outside his hero persona in front of you and disobey NAHA's orders. Because if something involves you with NAHA around, it's automatically his business too.
Meanwhile, Herschel continued on blabbering in front of you. โThe North American Hero Association is dedicated to serving the public, protecting the innocents, and ensuring that justice is served! As you can see, Binary Star is one of the greatest heroes we've honed.โ
Ray never took off his eyes from his handler. As usual, Herschel did the pr dialogues NAHA would do. But there was a blaring alarm in Ray's mind; something.. doesn't feel right. His instincts were telling him something is off. His worry is even more justified when he couldn't understand the words he was hearing from his handler's mind. Something about 'National Defense Internship', 'Kyuubey', and 'Magical Girl Contract'. He doesn't understand those things nor was he briefed about it but you with NAHA is already a blaring alarm in his mind. What more if NAHA begins to think and act progressively just as what they usually do?
"To what do I owe the pleasure, Herschel?โ Ray stepped up with his usually heroic smile, but his tone is unusually firm and cutting Herschel's dialogues. Binary Star never does that in front of public eye. He might take the public attention through irritated, gritted teeth. But it was only when he didn't smoked for a long time period. And the handler can already sense the underlying threat in the hero's tone. Ray was pressuring Herschel to tell him what's going on and he's already thinking of berating his handler later for leaving him in the dark. Herschel knew he has to keep a tighter leash on the hero because he knew all too well how handful Ray can get whenever they do something he doesn't like.
โBinary Star, I was only.. showing around our notable guest here. To show how dedicated our association is when it comes to the public safety!โ Herschel forced a smile proudly presented. The handler chuckled to himself and patted Binary Star on the back to which Ray curses internally.
On the other hand, as much as you marveled at the hero's commitment, you couldn't help but to notice the strained smile on his face. As if he were to smile longer, the cracked smile on his face would crumble. It worried you; the vibes emanating from Binary Star himself was a huge contrast to the heroic and noble words Herschel was saying.
Maybe Mr. Binary Star was just having a bad day? You thought to yourself, trying to reason out. You happen to read from the hero news blog about the new implemented 'two days off', so Binary Star having a bad day is quite reasonable because NAHA made him work on his rest day. You felt bad inconveniencing Binary Star's rest days.
Fidgeting your skirt, you summon the courage to voice out your thoughts. โThank you for the time, Mr. Herschel. But.. with all due respect, Isn't it.. Mr. Binary Star's day off?โ
You barely voiced out your thoughts there. You were unusually timid, but surprisingly you would be brave when it comes to defending someone. Your face reddened when you felt both men's gazes at you, intimidated by the high ranking handler and the hero's zeroed gaze on you. However, you remained firm on your ground. Nevermind the fast pace of your heart, you insisted your stand on the rest days of the hero you admire.
โIs it possible to do this another time? Mr. Binary Star works so hard t..to protect everyone, I think it's not.. fair to keep him here while he's supposed to be resting!โ
There is never a dull moment with you around, my Star. Ray thought to himself; he was surprised by your sudden act of kindness, leaving him silent. His day off was already long forgotten now that the reason he requested for it is already here. Plus, he's thinking of plans investigating your connection to NAHA. So, when you brought up his days off, it brings a clash of intention. With him trying to keep you away from NAHA and you trying keep him from neglecting his health. Either way, for someone defined by the dirty life he's led and the dirty work he's done, your ability to shine as his Star is both magnetic and painful to watch.

First and foremost, Ray doesn't want you near NAHA in any way or form. From his childhood to his adulthood, he knows too well about the cruel system of the government and individuals in itโthey will exploit, take advantage, and control youโso, if you even think about collaborating, associating, or being near with them, it's immediately a firm no. Not even a strand of your hair will be touched.
He envies your life and your naive optimism. Unlike him, you have a loving (and present) family and best friends. Then instead of you having a cynical view-response to the world's cruelty, you chose to uphold kindness and positivity. Even if you get to know and understand the unjust world, you would still choose to change it rather than accepting it. You're kind not because you're ignorant, you're kind because you chooses to be, even after seeing how dark and cruel the world is. You were the radical optimism to his learned cynicism.
Ray cannot do nor say those kind gestures and words you make. As Binary Star, he play the role very well front of the public eye. But only forced and fake. To you, though? It's genuine, real. You were the only one who saw through his dirty, fake life and decided there's a desperate human in it.
He's really frustrated about you being excessively kind to others; you don't care even if it means it hurts you. Sometimes he has to pull you away from danger itself because you're just too stubborn. Based on his life experience and perspective as the forced, objectified symbol of hope and justice, he doesn't understand why you're so willing to save others. He's indifferent and feels no genuine satisfaction in it. He will only act as Binary Star and save others if you ask (beg) him though.
I think Ray may relate and get along with your best fiend, Homura through a common ground. Through who? Through you. They both share a desperate desire to protect and save you. For Ray, he keeps you from NAHA. And for Homura? She stops you from making a contract with Kyuubey. Also, they both know very well and understand the reality of the world they grew up in. Ray is tired of being the symbol of hope to the people that doesn't even view him as a human. Homura with her trauma of Kyuubey's deception and the cycle of despair being a magical girl. So, you want to collaborate with NAHA and be a magical girl? Not happening with Ray and Homura.
If you express even the slightest desire to 'save' him from his life or have him quit his job as a hero, he'll accept it lol and even help you out. A part of him holds a deep-rooted resentment against NAHA for what they've done and made him into. So, saving him not just mentally would solidify his view of you as his star. Plus, hes the #1 hero, he's powerful now. Who can stop him from doing what he wants? Not even NAHA could control him anymore. He can do whatever he wants with the abilities he killed for. if helping you save the magical girls from becoming witches and being with you is what he wants, then so be it. But like I said earlier, he won't let you be a magical girl once he understands the unsaid cost of being one.
He has you now. With you, you cement the idea of you being his star, his saving grace, and tie to humanity.
