24- My Diamond in The Rough (Jester/Self-Conscious Reader)
“Darling, do you have any plans tomorrow?” Jester asked, not looking up from the book he was engrossed in. “... Yes?” You answered, lying to his face.
“You're lying; you know I don’t appreciate being lied to.” His eyes turned up to you, staring at your figure as you tried to avoid his gaze. “Make sure you have nothing planned for tomorrow. I also expect you to be here outside of the circus gates at 12 in the afternoon; sharp.”
He left the tent, leaving you dumbfounded and your anxiety through the roof. Did you do something wrong? Did you misorganize any important documents for Ticket taker? You were sure you did it how he liked it. You weren’t sure; already dreaded tomorrow. What’s worse is spending any time with him. Jester of all clowns to be with. He’s imposing if not terrifying.
You let out a tired sigh. You don’t want to go.
Arriving just five minutes early, you patiently waited for Jester and there he was. Dressed head to toe in disguise. Wearing a black mask he wore a hat and a hoodie, with a dark purple jacket, dark jeans, and boots. “Now then,” he cleaned the lenses of his sunglasses before he looked back at you. “Are you ready to go?”
Nodding your head, you followed behind him as the two of you walked to town. You weren’t sure how to feel about the whole situation; you weren’t sure why Jester wanted to spend the day with you. Why you out of all people? Feeling sick to your stomach, you pushed it down as you followed him to a store. Wait, a clothing store? Did he want to buy something and wanted your opinion?
Looking around at the clothes on the mannequins and the clothing rack, you noticed how elegant the store looked. Jester pushed some clothes around before settling on a dress. “Go on, try this one on.”
Not giving you a chance to speak, you were taken to a dressing room. Sighing, you stepped out of your clothes and into the dress Jester pushed into your hands. You wore a light grey shirt, a white tank top, and dark olive green pants. You were stunned. You looked… great. You looked great in it.
“I’m coming.” Unlocking the door, you poked your head out before widening the door. “... How do I look?”
Jester said nothing as he put a curled finger to his lips and looked at your figure. Your eyes averted to the ground as you clasped your fingers together. “You look beautiful.”
“I said you looked beautiful; it suits you,” Jester spoke, his finger away from his lips as he made you do a little spin in front of him. “You’re not lying to me to make me feel a little better, are you?”
“Now why would I do that? I’m cruel, yes, but I’m not that cruel.” Jester spoke, walking back to the clothing rack and picking out another outfit. Then another… and another. Complimenting you on every fit as you walked out of the room. “Um, Jester?”
“Are we taking one of these clothes… or?”
You paused and looked up to him in disbelief. “You’re kidding, you don’t mean-” “I mean it. Darling, you should have more confidence in yourself. Why should you care what others think when you will only meet them once in your life? Why should you let their petty words make an impact in your life, letting them carve into your skin as they put you down? What you should do is raise your head high and walk through the darkness, tear away their hands as they try to lower you below themselves.”
You looked away, rubbing your shoulder. “I don’t know if I could… I’m not sure if I’m strong enough-”
“You are strong enough. To be strong enough, you have to believe you are strong enough. And you are. Don’t ever doubt yourself.” Jester spoke, uncrossing his arms as he looked at you. Raising your chin to look into your eyes. “Raise your head high, Y/N.”
“Good,” he said with a soft smile. “Now, onto the next store.”
“Wait, we’re not done?” Dumbfounded once again as he paid for your clothes, taking your hand as he grabbed the bags with the other. “Of course, we’re not. Now follow me, darling.”
You never had a choice, did you? Well, at least your perspective on Jester changed after that eventful day.
