While it features various characters like the Buzzy Beetle-like Noko Bombette enemy and the Bomubomu pig enemy from that game, some characters are included here who do not appear in that game at all like Luigi and Toads.
Note also that the yellow flying enemies are, extremely bizarrely, multiple copies of the Sewer Rat boss of Macro Zone. In-game, the Sewer Rat is a unique character, and being a rat, cannot actually fly. It does climb up walls and drop down, which the artists for the commercial may have interpreted as the ability to fly freely.

So this is the mythical "Potato of Harkinian" PC build that apparently I never showed off here.
It's based around an old industrial motherboard from 2013-2015, the ASRock QC5000M, featuring either an AMD A4-5000 or A4-5050 APU with Radeon HD 8330 Graphics. Mine is the A4-5050, which is slightly faster.
It's not that exciting on the face of it. It's a 10W quad-core Jaguar netbook CPU running at 1.5GHz, with barely any cache. But the secret sauce is that the Radeon HD 8330 IGP is actually GCN 2.0, like the Radeon R9 200-series, albeit a lot tinier. In fact, both the CPU and GPU are actually architecturally similar to the PS4, just⦠worse.
(There's also an ITX version of the same motherboard, the QC5000-ITX, but it's harder to come by. The same AliExpress seller had it, but I missed the boat. This short mATX version was cheaper anyway and has better connectivity, but the ITX version would have been so cute!)
Add 8GB of CeX-spec DDR3 RAM, a SATA SSD and a power supply. Despite the poor single-core performance, the many cores means it's actually a half-decent computer for web browsing and light productivity. This is way more than I expected, so I'm really happy with it.
So I built this not for gaming nor is it to be a home server, but for one purpose alone. It's for testing open source console-to-PC ports on low-end hardware. GCN 2.0 means Vulkan support, and this is likely the single lowest common denominator of the Vulkan era, save for the dual core version of this processor, which also has a weaker iGPU.
But this quad-core is much more sensible for this purpose, and I've got a dual-core system I can test on already.
But can it game? Well, kind of but not really. HL2 runs at about 50-60fps at 1024x768. Tomb Raider (2013), which traditionally loves AMD Radeon GPUs going back to TeraScale, even when running at 800x600 and lowest everything barely managed 30fps in the benchmark, running closer to 20fps once you're actually ingame. It's not clear whether this is a CPU or GPU bottleneck, and it's likely that it's both.
So this isn't really a cheap entry into PC gaming or anything. Despite the architecture it's less powerful than an Xbox 360, and it wasn't even cheap compared to like, getting an old Skylake-to-Kaby Lake office PC. Don't do this. Don't be me.
It plays a mean game of Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing, though. On Wii settings.
This all of course depends on how your Linux distribution is configured, and in fact I'm dual-booting Linux Mint and CachyOS for this very reason.
X11 loses graphics performance compared to Wayland, around 10% on this system. Crucially, GCN Southern Islands/Sea Islands support in [amdgpu] was in beta until very recently where it's now officially supported, so distros based on Ubuntu 24.04-LTS like Linux Mint (or ZorinOS, ElementaryOS, etc.) default to the legacy [radeon] drivers and will require additional kernel configuration to actually utilise the GPU properly.
CachyOS? It simply just works out of the box.
(Although I found it won't boot on the latest 7.x kernel for some reason, so I have to use 6.18-LTS. It's probably fine. Probably.)
But of course, its true calling is here, in what's becoming a little bit of a homelab.
And for this purpose, it performs beautifully. Every single Harbour Masters port runs at 60fps, with the all-new Lighthouse being insanely well optimised even on hardware this low-end. It also runs Dusklight and Banjo Recompiled at mostly 60fps, so long as you keep the resolution low. I've been helping test Courage Reborn across a variety of Linux setups, which it also runs perfectly with relatively low CPU impact.
So this has worked out to be a decent floor for performance across a lot of these ports. You could chuck a Dell OEM Radeon display adaptor into a Core 2 Duo/Quad system and enjoy performance on par with or better than this.
(Tangentially related fact: Did you know that Wiseguy tests his N64 Recompiled ports on a Core i5-2400 and GTX 750 Ti system? Now you do.)
Oh and, in case you're wondering about that laptopβ¦
Sitting next to the Spud of Harkinian is my hp Pavilion dm-1 Notebook PC, with the AMD E-450 dual-core APU and Radeon HD 6320 IGP, and a whopping 1.5GB of RAM. The stock configuration of my university laptop that I actually posted on Tumblr with back in the day, only it too runs Linux Mint now. That iGPU is actually really good, but it's hampered by the glacially slow CPU. It sits in this setup mostly to torment the Harbour Masters crew, and being Terascale doesn't have the capability to run ports that require Vulkan (or DX12) like Dusklight. But hey, it actually can run the Harbour Masters ports at full speed at the original 20/30fps frame rates. While screaming.
(I probably should make a post about this on my human blog as well so I can link it to people in the port community. But considering I'm writing this at nearly 3am, another time.)
