MY BELIEF FROM MY LAST POST. I STAND WITH IT EVEN MORE. STOP GIVING THESE PEOPLE A SAFE SPACE IN THE COMMUNITY.
MC is not canon female only because canonly MC can be whatever or whoever they want both in game and outside of it. Again like OP said, there's a gender select option in the beginning of the game.
MC can be a woman, a man, enby, agender, demi, genderfluid, trans, whatever under the umbrella of endless genders and lacks of!
And this goes same for the MC sexuality and romantic identity and attraction too!
I will suspect some believe MC is only canon female, since in the beginning of the game launch, they were just female. But Neko since then updated and changed that, because before he didn't know how to add more pronouns and options. Once he learned, he went to work to add it.
Yet I bet some see it as just a "add-on* to seem inclusive" than canon thing about the MC and the game now.
*What I mean by this, is there's some games who are known of starting off just for women players and readers mindset alone. It's kind of obvious once you start playing and keep on playing. It's expressed through fem coded writing, descriptors, etc.
But once the dev see they can get possible more support, fans, players, even money from other players, especially the queer/trans audience that is desperate for more inclusivity in games. They add queer/trans inclusivity as a option now, but it's a after thought, not really that important to them. It's clearly stated when not much or any of the fem-coded writing and all is changed or removed when playing as a man or enby.
I could go on over this but this is just a case of false-inclusivity which is done by a few devs over their games. Yes it's still nice to have that inclusivity included, but still doesn't erase the fact we clearly are just a after thought to them. And their main target audience and care of players, is the (and often cishet) women players.
There's also the unfortunate issue of how the official China partnership merchandise post for TFC, only used the term "My lady" too in it. Than you know, the more inclusive term "My dear". Which might of just solidified this idea to some people thinking MC is only female now.
I spoke more in depth about it here. If you want to read it, you can.
And my context post over what brought up me talking about the issue in the first place.
I think I had enough of talking about this for now. But once more, stop giving queer/transphobes a safe space in queer/trans inclusive spaces. It only does more harm than good for all.
