Why is law stuff like this always two words?

These are called 'legal doublets' and we can once again blame the Normans. /

Post 1066, the language of nobility was French, and the language of the working class was English.

Since both English and French speakers needed to understand legal matters, a word from each language was often used to aid understanding: /

'breaking and entering'

breaking = English

entering = French

'will and testament'

will = English

testament = French /

Legal doublets later were formed using only one language but kept the legal-sounding two-word convention:

'cease and desist'

cease = French

desist = French

'to have and to hold'

to have = English

to hold = English /

This is also one of the reasons we have both 'attorney' and 'lawyer' to mean the same thing.

attorney = French

lawyer = English

And I mean, this is a bit into the established relationship. They're both comfortable, relaxed, having a quiet drink. But then Rook goes and asks this of him and it blurs all sorts of lines

I personally want it to go along the lines of the hannibal/will dynamic of "with my hands"

Like, imagine a Rook trying to soften the blow by saying "well, if I had to, I'd use poison. Something quick and painless--"

And then Lucanis just comes out with "I'd do it with my hands." Like it's not a live grenade thrown between them. "I'd hold you. And I'd fall apart as I gazed into your eyes, watching as the light fades from them. But I swear to you, you'll never be alone, even at the end."
