A world where humans have no innate magic but our pets do.
Cat magic is pretty raw and they mainly use it for getting into places theyâre not supposed to. They can be trained if youâre patient, and will sometimes do favours for their owners out if the blue, but only if they want to.
Dogs have been bred for specific magic over the centuries and each breed can do certain things. Showing off your magic is an essential part of a dog show.
Horses come in horse, pegasus, and unicorn, each with their own magical talents.
Fuck knows what birds can do, I donât trust birds.
For an obvious example⌠dalmatians have been bred for fire magic. A properly trained dalmatian will run into a burning building and all the fires around it will go out. Caution is necessary, of course, because they can also do the opposite. Their favourite toys are often a bit blackened, and puppies must be kept in fireproof surroundings, with extinguishers in easy reach.
The Pekingeseâ magic is camouflage - they can change colour to match whatever they touch, whether a blanket, a mossy rock, or even a reflective mirror. This ability originally enabled them to hide in a robe, so their owners could take them into places where dogs were technically not permitted. The classic image of a pekingese is of it sitting outside a building, appearing to be part of the stonework⌠until it reveals itself to growl at an intruder.
Portuguese water dogs are canine silkies - in deep enough water they transform into curly-haired seals, and when they climb back out and shake off, they turn back into dogs.
Cats are often thought to be selfish and troublesome, to only use their magic for themselves, and for random but odd favours.
This is not the entire truth.
Cat magic is largely Watch and Ward, which is only observable in what does not happen. Cats are known to protect sleeping humans from danger simply by being present, their lamp-like eyes acting as a sort of nâest pas possible upon all possible intruders, from pests to more deadly threats.
Pitbulls over the ages were bred to emit magic to calm children and help them sleep
Collies can multiply themselves for a short time to corral animals
St Bernardâs turn into snow and can feel where an avalanche is going to happen hours before the event
Anatolian Shepherd can shapeshift into other animals around them to blend in
corgi magic is banned in most public areas, and one of the few dog magics not to be demonstrated in show- allowing your corgi to perform magic in public can be punished with up to $1000 in fines, even before the costs of damage to people and property
Golden Retriever magic is sometimes considered âdisneyâ magic, as they typically attract waterfowl and game birds. this is not always the benefit one thinks it would be, as some lines have a penchant for attracting swans! some, however, attract vertebrates of a different sort. one remarkable individual was given an honorary degree in wildlife biology for her prodigious ability to attract frogs and toads, and is currently hard at work in Costa Rica.
#I would die for that fictional golden retriever scientists
no. you must live for her. she demands it of you. how else would you be able to appreciate all these great amphibians sheâs finding?
A catâs protective aura gets stronger in response to affection and respect. If you bond strongly enough with one, you can actually FEEL the magic working, soothing fear and anxiety. They also work in dreams, catching and killing nightmares. Some can do this from several rooms away, while others like to work more closely and will sit on their ownersâ chests or heads while they sleep.
Yes please to all of this.
Rat magic: a mysterious multiplication of SOMETHINGâfood or other valuable resources generallyâwhich can be pretty handy if you donât mind the nibble marks.
Beagle magic is mostly low-grade telepathy, which is very handy for coordinating a pack hunt, but also makes individual dogs prone to neurosis.
Some cats, like their behaviour of presenting a prey, also sometimes present their owner with a small magical favour. Sometimes this involves a transmuted treat. Sometimes this involves a clumsy owner growing whiskers
What the hell do Corgis do that it is illegal for them to do their magic in public?
Bird magic varies wildly; Parrot magic is different from Chicken magic is different from Pigeon magic etc.
Pigeons have a magic of communication; paired birds can echo messages back and forth. Oddly, they also make bread rise better?
Chickens, like cats, have powerful warding magic.
Parrots (and corvids) are powerful and highly intelligent; they can mimic the magic of anything around them. However, they do this generally for their own ends and have a bad habit of picking up the most destructive magic. Never, ever keep an African Grey with a corgi.
In the past though this was why ravens and crows were associated with gods of magic and knowledge â they often know all the deep secret magic of deer and field mouse and owl and wolf. Itâs said they can even teach their magic to humans, though this has never been proven.
@draconym knows more about bird magic, I think, and probably a great deal about snake magic!
@teal-deerâs description of bird magic is spot-on.
On snake magic: it isnât very well-documented, simply because we havenât domesticated any snakes for their magic. When âsnake magicâ comes up, it usually brings to mind the powerful damage-over-time effects that vipers are capable of, but itâs actually very common for snakes to have healing auras, even (sometimes especially) very venomous snakes. Generally this is a low-intensity effect expressed passively by a calm individual, so it goes unnoticed unless one is spending a lot of time in close proximity to the snake.
Some snakes also have emesis-inducing abilities that they use defensively when they feel threatened! This may not sound particularly healing, but it can be very useful in cases of poisoning.
Thereâs probably a great diversity of serpent magic that has yet to be discovered. Bullsnakes, for example, can sometimes cause plants to grow more rapidly, which is thought to benefit them by providing habitat for their prey.
A lot of people are afraid of snake magic because they assume itâs entirely damage-oriented, but personally I think bee magic is a lot scarier.

fucking GET you
we are already living in the cyberpunk future and i know this because within a span of 3 days we went from this tweet:
to thousands of people making phony images and replying to them with their passionate desire to have them as a tshirt to overload the bots with nonsense and junk and send out warnings to shoppers like this:
and now we even have people replying to pictures of baby yoda with âi want this on a tshirtâ knowing how ravenous disney is being with copyright in hopes to get the stores taken down altogether
i dont know what it is about stuff like this and the whole turn mei into a symbol of hk protesters thing but, its really reassuring for some reason

If thereâs one thing I will never understand itâs Lord of the Rings fans wanting to be an elf in Middle Earth. I mean, sure theyâre graceful and pretty but they live too damn long and having to witness an eternity of stupidity from the species around them. Like, imagine being Elrond and basically witnessing a cringe compilation of the human race. Nope. No thanks.
Iâve been witnessing a cringe compilation of the human race my whole life. Elrond is not special.
This helpful stingray offered itself up as a tent for a diver who decided to have a lie down on the seabed at Grand Cayman. (x)

No Bones Day
every so often i remember pog stands for pomegranate orange guava and i am struck down by the sheer strength of the butterfly effect
1. Haleakala Dairy creates a juice of passion fruit (not pomegranate, my bad), orange, and guava and calls it "P.O.G."
2. A game involving milk bottle caps pops up in the 70s, haleakala makes their lids collectable to play that game with the "POG" label
3. Game gets very popular in the 90s, gets called "pogs" based on the og caps (primarily) used having "POG" on them
4. Streamer Ryan Gutierre makes funny haha exaggerated faces in 2010
5. In 2011, same guy releases a video called "Pogs Championship"
6. PogChamp emoji is created, short for the "Pogs Championship' video, and its used to signify excitement (also sometimes "Play Of the Game" since it shares an acronym)
its all fruit
thatâs
thatâs so
I just like the story behind this. On one hand, one piece of misinformation can easily be accepted as fact if it looks appealing enough. Raccoon skulls look more like what you would expect of an animal skull. Instead of the reality where wolf skulls are actually kind of ugly from the front. But this design is made unintentionally far greater because of this. These tattoos were all found under the #wolfskulltattoo tag on instagram

Visiting the Monterey Bay lately means taking a trip to the Salps!
Beachgoers and ocean explorers have been greeted by an estimated countless bazillions of salps caught up in current events, including these donut salps, Cyclosalpa affinis, found just offshore of the Aquarium last week!
Salps are prolific and prodigious filter-feeders and key members of the gelataâthe myriad different gelatinous, drifting organisms that make up a significant part of the oceanâs mass of living creatures. Most salps have a bewildering life history that these cyclosalps illustrate beautifully.
The solitary phase of the salp is known as an oozooidâit will asexually produce long chains of clones known as gonozooids that you can see emerging in the photo above.
Now Cyclosalpa gonozooids arenât just sexy plankton for their enchanting bouquets, oh no noâin this phase, most salps are sequentially hermaphroditic, starting off female with an egg that is fertilized by older, male individuals from other chains.
The embryo develops into an oozooid inside its sexually-reproducing parentâand those developing oozooids may already be growing their new clone chains before theyâve even flown the gelatinous nest! You can see the next generation developing inside these older gonozooids:
This alternation of generations enables salps to be some of the most productive organisms in the multi-cellular world, exploding in numbers overnight and drastically altering the planktonic landscape by feeding on a wide range of food sizes and starting blizzards of marine snow as sinking fecal pellets and food-stuffed mucous pours into deeper waters from the salpy deluge.
Salps are one of the oceanâs most influential biological players, and thatâs not the only thing we share in common. Salps are invertebrate chordates, along with their tunicate cousins the pyrosomes, doliolids and sea squirtsâthose colorful reef-dwelling filter-feeders found throughout the world ocean.
These animals all look rather like we do in their early stages, with a notochord in their larval form that is largely lost in transition to adulthood in the tunicates, while being replaced in purpose by a backbone in fishes, birds and us mammals.
So as alien as salps may appear to be in their midwater manner, theyâre some of our closest invertebrate kinâand a key part of the backbone of our ocean planetâs operations.

Really bad boy:
Of course itâs an African gray.
