goddd the volume 16 cover is so good. how she's can't even look at the audience. how the seat is bent so she can't even sit naturally and has to constantly strain to sit on it. in the other covers endo uses the objects on the floor to show a character's secrets - things in front of the chair aren't hidden, and things behind are secrets. her:
the volleyball: represents her public image: even in her group of friends: she's still the first lady to them.
the crystal ball: her interest in the supernatural. she's embarrassed by it, but shares it with yor and a select group of people. private, but not completely secret.
the moon: this has already been linked to anya's powers (can't read minds when there's a new moon, in chapter 122 barbara notices something outside the window after asking sigmund if something's wrong, right before we find out he was involved in anya's experiments. people have theorised that the moon is linked to why he only remembered everything then.) and to Donovan (Melinda thinks he's an alien). represents her fear of donovan, something she has shared with almost no one.

i don’t know exactly how to say this in a way that comes across clearly, but i am obsessed with the idea of depicting m/f relationships in a way where the hype isn’t all on the man’s love of the woman, and how swoonworthy it is and how powerful. (this has been on my mind an awful lot lately because lost loves to lean on this, especially in season six. it’s also something that often grates on me about the office’s depiction of jim and pam even though i’m very fond of jim and pam.) i really want to see women being active in the relationship too, rather than just being the object to be pursued or worshiped or cherished or whatever the heck! not in a way that depicts women going out of their way for men who don’t reciprocate, which i think is always the go-to assumption when you talk about this kind of portrayal of a relationship. but i love the idea of women being able to make romantic gestures and acts of great love toward their male love interests in a way that is, like, considered cool and iconic in the way that so many male characters’ romantic actions toward their ladies are cool and iconic. idk how to say it. like, something that goes beyond ‘is this woman being honored nobly enough by her man, which is the sum total of all romance?’ i want the women participating tooooooooo! WHY NOT!
This reminds me of a couple of stories I’ve read, which are always well-intentioned but sort of end up equating “this woman’s partner respects her agency and treats her like a person instead of a sexual object” with “he asks first before doing anything sexual to her”.
And again it’s like they mean well but in these scenarios women are ultimately still getting treated as passive recipients having things done to them, as opposed to active participants who do or initiate things themselves. Like yeah it’s nice that Bob asked Alice for permission ten times before starting to undress her (although honestly that many times would be unnecessary and annoying) but the idea that Alice might want to undress Bob is never even considered as a possibility.
