Someone–Stephen King? Pretty sure I saw this in a Stephen King foreword–once said they’d like to say to a brain surgeon, “Boy, I’d love to do brain surgery someday.”

We treat “the ability to put words into a sentence” like it’s just the same as “the ability to form a coherent narrative that engenders a variety of emotions within the reader and puts them in a scene and shows them what they didn’t see before”.

And that’s like me drawing a stick figure and saying I’m an artist.

Writers are constantly devalued because everyone thinks they have a book in them and don’t realize the level of skill and commitment it takes to finish even a short story, much less a whole book.

I’m torn between agreeing and not. I’m torn between life is hard and everything is hard and it sucks, and between no, it’s really not.

So let’s just look at it this way, kindness is a choice. It is a daily, hourly, choice. It is your decision to speak up or stay quiet. It is your decision to be vocal with your praise and silent with your criticism. It is your decision to be vocal with your justice and silent with your hate.

It’s a decision you make every moment of your life. Little things are kind. Holding doors, smiling. Taking your anger to someone else who will listen instead of dumping it back on the person who gave it to you. Smiling and nodding as someone rambles on with an idea you don’t even agree with, because it’s harmless fantasy. Keeping private chats private, giving people the benefit of the doubt, showing empathy. Everyone has a complex life as colorful as yours and 90% of the time they are not out to inconvenience you, but trying their best to take care of themselves.

Our world is full of hive minds and influences, and so many people are telling us today sucks and the world is hard. You can still allow yourself to be happy and kind despite that.
