incredibly typical and predictable that staying here for one month question mark turned into two months but i am actually going home at the end of this week unless catastrophe strikes.
bad news: our cherry tomato plants (my mom planted them but i have been tending them for seven weeks, since they were ankle-high, so i think they count as 'ours') that are now taller than me and growing in pots on the porch keep blowing over in the wind and today when they blew over one of the main stems got totally smushed :(
good news: this necessitated me (1) using an old rope (that my mom's been practicing sailors' knots with) to idiosyncratically tie the tomato stakes to the porch railing, (2) bringing the hose around to water everything so they'll all be less top-heavy, (3) going down to the lake to find some big stones to add to the picnic table cover because it keeps blowing off because its two erstwhile biggest stones are now in the tomato plant pots, (4) blasting the new stones with the hose to get bugs and dirt off of them and also blasting the picnic table cover with the hose to get diet coke off of it because my diet coke blew over, all-in-all incrediblyyyy satisfying my spiritual need to bustle around as one belonging-part of home-and-adjacent-nature.
on monday evening a river otter gallumphed up to, like, 10 feet away from me, realized we were there sitting at the picnic table, gallumphed on to hide under the porch next to us, and then as we sat back at the picnic table and chatted (after getting up to look for it under the porch) gallumphed out from under the porch, back across the yard, and down a sandy bank, back to the lake. the river otter was bigger than luna. its fur was sleek and it was stout and goofy and beautiful. shocking and enchanting moment????? wild?????
paul newman was very handsome. has anyone ever commented on this before

i understand its chronic pain but every day seems a bit excessive
it's funny to be 35 and unable to sleep because i'm panicking about not having a baby, because this is an age-appropriate activity to the point of cliche, now, but i've been doing it for, like, what, nearly two decades? and there's something that feels weird now! about doing it and having it be like 'well i mean yeah, duh, justified, very reasonable and common anxiety, sounds about right for your circumstances' when it's like no but it's myyyyyy anxiety, it's my little pet one, it's the most consistent one of my life forever, it's supposed to be silly and too soon, it's supposed to be a goofy worry i'm having at the wrong time, that's the familiar thing!! but now it's different?? hmmm.

woke up today brimming with existential dread and then tonight ate a grilled brat and some watermelon and two forms of potato (roasted and salad) on the deck and toasted two jumbo marshmallows and made one of them into a s'more and rode in the car for half an hour to a marsh i thought was much further away and saw a great blue heron standing in a birch tree and two trumpeter swans with four cygnets swimming in a pink sunset reflection and one duck with three fuzzy babies and heard many many bullfrogs that kept surprising me and making me giggle and heard some sandhill cranes make their big weird noise and walked back to the car in the mostly-dark towards one stripe of peach sky and venus with fireflies blinking all around in the grasses and another great blue heron or maybe the same one flew low right over us. then we stopped on the side of the road at an overlook where the ground drops out from beneath you and you're at the top of tall trees and you can hear the water hundreds of feet below and it gave me a little vertigo and made me a little nauseous but also felt like it would stick in a way that lots of things here don't right now; they mostly seem like they happen and then they kind of wash away and i won't be able to reach back for the feeling or the sight later. across the road from the overlook and the lake there were more fireflies and higher, glittering everywhere in the trees'-silhouette rather than sticking close to the ground, and i think that might stick too.

today my grandparents' 25-year-old pontoon boat stalled on the other side of the lake and would only start up in order to immediately sputter out. the anchor my mom tied on so we could have a little picnic while giving the motor a break before trying again came loose and was lost to the lake. i had to do a quick-change under a towel and jump in with a tow-rope around my waist to be a human anchor to stop us from very nearly drifting into strangers' docks and boats on hoists. our next-door neighbor and her daughter came to rescue us and tow us home but then their boat kept stalling when they tried to idle for a minute while i got back on the pontoon boat so i was like 'just leave me here! it's fine! come back to get me on [road that goes along the entirety of that side of the lake] in the car!' so they did, and luna climbed the back of the boat like a mountain goat and looked at me with alarm as they sped away leaving me in the lake. i eventually returned to land and walked down a dirt road through the woods with five thousand ruthless mosquitoes to get to that road and then i stood on the side of that road in my swimsuit and my grandma's crocs for an indeterminable amount of time in the beating sun, but at least the bugs weren't there. maybe it was 35 minutes. maybe it was 55. i genuinely have no idea. there was a nice woman floating in a tube by the dock we almost ran into and we bobbed in the lake together for awhile and watched the two boats get further away and chatted about loons and eagles and family history, and she let me use her phone to give my mom slightly more information about where to find me, and tomorrow we're going to bring her a thank-you cherry pie. when the next-door neighbor and her daughter got the boat towed home the other next-door neighbor and her daughter came over to help untie it and get it situated, because my mom still can't go in the water with her knee surgery incision. when i told my sister about our adventures she was like 'i'm speechless. but also, girl power.' and like, yeah. pretty much.

Does anyone know what to do about the temperature and also the prices
today i got a total rest day with no obligations or demands (besides, like, very basic luna care) for the first time in a month and i feel much less like i'm about to scream forever and throw myself off a cliff, so
oh ok
wait ok this is actually one that has caused some contention before when I've talked to people about it. reblog and tag whether or not you check the weather prediction every day before going out

i have been menstruating continually for the last 50 days :) :) :) :) :)
i AM going to just keep talking about this. if you don't want kind of graphic details about what's coming out of my uterus right now, this is your notice to pls stop reading. so! something about publicly acknowledging this was happening does seem to have moved us into a new phase of The Endless Bleeding. bodies! magic! for the past 50 days it had mostly been light, light enough to use light tampons or just free bleed without any real consequences, with a few exceptional days of like: whoops i slightly underestimated how much i was going to bleed overnight, or whatever. but today!! no!! i am bleeding through super plus tampons every 2-3 hours! i am bleeding out huge clotty globs of endometrial lining! aaaaaaa! not unusual for me but very different from the past 50 days. i hope this means it's like the grand finale of a fireworks show and my body is somehow resetting itself. pray 4 me.
it has been perfect elise temperature here for almost all of the past month and i've been revelling in it and now it is so hot and we'll see if i get more cranky about it if i can't sleep again tonight BUT in the meantime i'm not even suffering that much. notable! the lack of suffering in This Heat! like yes, i am Too Hot every second, sitting here eating a chicken caesar salad in my favorite spot (old plaid love seat that wears a slouchy green slipcover now, on the sunporch) in my PJs, with luna, looking at the lake and the sky that are both turning kind of lilac. a fan is blowing directly on me. if i reallyyyyy can't stand the temperature i could go jump in any number of lakes (none of which are stinky and full of algae) including the one right in front of me, and/or take a deep cool bath, so! idk it's okay. and obviously on a totally different scale i understand how exceptionally lucky i am to not only be physically not in danger from the heat but to also be able to cope with it without much adjustment, in the circumstances. i'm not gloating while people are dying, i'm just feeling some relief and wonder that this heat in this moment isn't making me wish i were dying. i think in my routine life when it's so hot and i'm miserable part of the misery is the prospect that It Will Just Be Like This Forever and here part of the not-misery is knowing it won't just be like this forever. both because of the geography and because however much time i have left with my mom—hopefully a lot, no jinxes—won't be endless, and i can't quite imagine it ever being enough, even when some of the things that fill that time feel like Too Much and of the wrong stuff, sometimes. the time has mostly been filled with good stuff lately, which makes being a person a little achy.
