Scars by Nishka Wolf (NishkaGray) At first he wondered how he could’ve possibly missed it. How he never even had an inkling. All those crappy hotel rooms and run down abandoned houses, fumbling in the darkness, in the back seat of the impala, wherever they could find a quiet corner and go at it undisturbed. (Linds says: Sam is very insecure about his body and scars, and Dean wants to make him see how beautiful he is in spite of them.)

welcome to the fandom dear! so i’m awful at fic recs because i never remember to bookmark anything. but below are some of my favorites that i’ve gone back to time and again! (also i have a fic rec tag here.)

watch your hands  by WeeWinchesterBeastie~5,800 words, explicit. one of the first wincest fics i read. it’s early seasons first time. pov shifts from sam to dean which works really well for this story. the sex is hot with a side of angsty feels.

monumentally stupid by Strive2bHappy~5,800 words, explicit. first time one shot. sam’s hands are injured and he’s been unable to shave for a while. dean helps him out, and sam enjoys it a little too much. hot as hell. 

where do we begin (the rubble or our sins?) by dimeliora40,000+ words, explicit. amnesia fic. dean wakes up in a hospital injured and missing his memories. he tries to rebuild his life, making some new friends along the way, including a drifter named sam. this story has two original characters that feature heavily in the story which sometimes can be annoying but i seriously loved them to pieces. strong black vine by shaenie200,000+ words, explicit. heavy bdsm. i did not want this fic to end, i deliberately paced myself to 1 or 2 chapters a day so it wouldn’t be over too soon. i love the casual way the brothers get together in this one, and the evolution of their relationship is really fascinating. also, there’s a really wonderful description of dean smarts vs sam smarts in here that i found to be so beautifully insightful. wild and free by tofu_is_amazing~41,000 words, teen and up. non-hunting biker au where sam and dean lead a biker gang. sometimes, the two of them just take off on their bikes and ride with no destination in mind. straddles the line between brothers and more than brothers until it doesn’t. i dreamed about this sam and dean for days after reading it. super sweet. 

a history of reasons by innerglow~18,000 words, mature. my favorite first kiss scene ever maybe. au of 10x23, sam and dean’s story as told through a series of flashbacks cataloging their history together.

sea story by beekeepercain18,000+ words, teen and up. not strictly wincest, but close. warnings for psychological and body horror and major character death, so skip if that’s not what you’re looking for. but if you’re ever in the mood to be majorly creeped out, give it a shot. i love this story, i think about it at least once a week. also the author’s note at the end fucking ruined me for days.

invisible boy series by dollylux280,000+ words, explicit. i was late to the game in reading this because i wanted to wait until i had time to properly devote to it. one of the most well-known fics in the fandom but since you’re new you may not have read yet? too epic to properly describe. the first part is entirely pre-series. second part includes early seasons. several time stamps and one shots in the same universe. 100% the epic love story of sam and dean. (basically anything else by dollylux too. i float now, forever is another of my faves but heed the warnings on that one!)

the three body problem by kisahawklin~37,000 words, explicit. wincestial, if you’re into that, castiel asks the winchesters on a date. super sweet and their date ideas were so creative!

j2 

bright lights and whiskey kisses by wetsammywinchester24,000+ words, explicit. j2 prohibition au. jared is so young an cute in this and jensen is so protective of him, my heart melted. also really very hot in some parts, whew! 

wake me up when september ends by lullys 131,000+ words, explicit. 9/11 au with firefighter jared and lawyer jensen. i cried reading this several times. the boys suffer and go through so much, individually and then together. i was rooting for them the whole time, though, and it was so clear from the beginning that their love would overcome everything. there’s a sequel and several time stamps, too, i haven’t had a chance to read it yet but they promise to be just as painful and wonderful.

the future is here by waywardelle13,000+ words, explicit. gah this is amazing. jared gets bonked on the head filming sometime during season 1, wakes up 10 years later to find the show is over, and he’s married to his co-star. 

premium cable by bewaretheides15~3,200 words, explicit. FUCK hot. imagine if supernatural were on hbo, and hbo decided to go all in with the incest. jared and jensen film a sex scene, and perhaps get a little too into it. amazing.

Casket Boy: …A man came to the orphanage to recruit omegas like him to leave the mainland for the Islands, where they would meet many unmated alphas to start a new life and increase the colony’s population. Jared was ready to try despite the dangers, but maybe he was not ready to meet someone like Jensen Ackles. (87k words, Awesome story with great world building, that will make you cry and laugh with Jared…mostly cry)

A Little Harmless Sex: Just some bareback smut.

A Good Employee Knows What His Boss Wants: Jensen’s been flirting non-stop, but Jared just doesn’t seem to get it. Then, one day, Jared’s stamping letter’s with Jensen’s signature; he uses his hand to test the stamp. Jensen can’t help it: he gets so hot when he sees his named stamped on Jared’s hand. He claims Jared roughly in front of the whole office.

A Little Light: During the Austin City Limits festival a guy is not all to nice to Jared and Jensen get possessive. Jared likes that new side in Jensen more than he thought he would.

why it’s my fave: Sam and Dean are cursed into acting like they’re in a committed, sexual relationship, but have no memory of said intimacy after the fact. Until one day, they both remember what they’ve been doing, and the PINING and UST while they dance around each other, trying not to want each other anymore, gosh– it’s just so hurty and good. I don’t want to give away anymore, but it’s a MUST. READ. This author is one of my faves, and I had a hard time picking just one. bottom!Dean.

why it’s my fave: set in season 10 as the Mark is starting to take Dean over, Dean tries to cheer Sam up in any way possible, but they end up taking comfort from each other in a whole new way. The characterization is beautiful, and the sex is scorching. This is another author I could read anything written by them, and I had a hard time narrowing down my fave. Bottom!Sam.

why it’s my fave: One of the hottest things I’ve read, hands down. Dean is obsessed with Sam’s mouth, and that leads to their first time. This is mostly just Wincest smut, but it’s delicious, and in-character. This author’s work is all fantastic, though, and I recommend it all. no top/bottom in this.

why it’s my fave: This is a J2. Jared is a lonely prince who is granted a wish that lasts until dawn, and that wish ends up being Jensen, who is a woodsman. This is what I like to call “hot as FUCK porn with all the feels.” It has undertones of Dom/sub, but it’s tender, too. I can’t rec it enough. I know I keep saying this, but I recommend EVERYTHING written by her. She’s incredible. She makes us feel it. bottom!Jared.

why it’s my fave: MoC!Dean is incredibly vulnerable with Sam in this, questioning why Sam sticks around, begging Sam not to let him hurt him, but Sam isn’t afraid of him, and he shows Dean that. Super emotional, very in-character, and hot like fire. Another author who I’ve read tons of their work. bottom!Sam.

why it’s my fave: a truly hot-as-fire bottom!dean story. Sam and Dean had a kinky/sexual relationship back in season 4 (Dean wore panties for Sam, for instance), but it stopped, and Sam is pining for Dean. He earns Dean’s trust back, and it’s just hot as FIRE, with great characterizations. Even if you’re not big on bottom!dean, the emotional side of this alone is worth reading.

Still alive after all those years after Dean had planned on killing him. Sure, they’d made up after that but there are things in Sam’s mind that he won’t ever be rid of. It’s evident even more by Dean’s constant forgiving of Castiel.

this is such a loaded question. our fandom is full of so many amazing stories and so many talented authors, and it’s almost impossible for me to make a list of anything without it being three miles long. that being said, I’ll try. mind you, I am far less read in Wincest. despite my love of it, J2 fics have always called to me more, and always, so forgive me if most of what I give are J2 stories. the beautiful and the ones that make me cry often criss-cross, so I’ll do my best to organize them as much as I can.

Fresh out of school with a degree from the University of Washington, Jensen meets and falls for Jeff Morgan. He may not know what he wants to do with his life, but for the first time since leaving Texas, he feels like things are coming together. Jeff seems like the perfect guy, right up until it all falls apart, and Jensen is left wondering where he went wrong. A couple failed relationships and a few years later, Jensen’s decided that one-night stands are preferable to dates. He’s got his friends and his roommate, Sophia, for everything non-sex related, after all. Until Sophia decides to move in with her boyfriend and Jensen’s stuck trying to find a new roommate. At Sophia’s insistence, Jensen meets Jared Padalecki and the two become fast friends. Only, the more they get to know each other, the more obvious it is that there’s something there. But Jensen is unwilling to risk losing Jared’s friendship for the possibility of more. Unfortunately, if he doesn’t get things figured out, he might lose Jared anyway.

Comment: this story is causes so much emotional confusion for me because it’s so perfect with just Jensen and Jeff and I couldn’t see how it would end up with Jared in the picture at all and then it just. happens. and it’s amazing to watch Jensen grow and to watch Jared worm his way, unknowingly really, into Jensen’s heart.

Comment: grace_fully is one of the most talented writers this fandom has had and I miss her so much. this story is so simple and gorgeous and you can feel the pining just as much as you can feel drip of sweat on your skin in a muggy summer.

Not only is Jensen apparently immune to the sex-power-stare of Jared Padalecki, he’s never around to witness it. Every time the director yells That’s a wrap! After granting Sam and Dean a few final requests, he ‘packs his bags’ and takes everything supernatural in existence with him. Left with nothing to hunt, Sam talks a reluctant Dean into settling down in a small town outside of Sioux Falls. Sam seems to want them live a normal kind of life, but between the ridiculous estate sale Sam bought to furnish the house, the arrival of a very human Castiel who’s overwhelmed by human emotions, and their quirky, invasive neighbors, it’s anything but. Dean’s having a difficult time adjusting, convinced everything couldn’t be more abnormal until Sam reveals exactly what kind of life he wants to have with Dean. Dean can’t deny the part of him that wants it–but can he accept it?

One Going On Eternity And Counting Some boundaries were never meant to be crossed …

Loudmouth  Sam describes their sex life to the Feds. Sometime around season 2 or 3, Sam’s in an interrogation room with some cop/FBI agent who’s trying to convince him to provide evidence against Dean. They ask why Sam’s staying with someone who’s brought him nothing but trouble, and the cops listen on in horror as Sam calmly replies with a fifteen-minute dissertation on how he’s a total slut for Dean’s cock. Maybe he’s fed up and being sarcastic, maybe he’s under a truth spell, maybe he knows he’s going to be rescued in an hour and just doesn’t give a shit anymore. Maybe it’s all true, or maybe Sam’s making it up but secretly wishes it were true. Bonus points if Dean somehow hears or sees the interview tape and gets crazy turned-on. No major embarrassment squick, please – Sam really doesn’t care what the cops think of him. He can be ashamed if *Dean* finds out, as long as Dean enthusiastically sets him straight.

A Peacefulness Follows  Sam breaks Deans deal and realizes that what he wants most is Dean.

It’s a John-finds-out fic, but unlike the more conventional structure where “John finds out” is the horrifying realization towards which the story is barreling (half the man i used to be by dollylux being the prototype of this) or “John finds out” is the catalyst of disaster (Mockingbird by candle_beck) this fic uses a nonlinear narrative that starts with the moment John finds out. It’s a tense moment and there’s a lot to unpack. John finding out is what frames the narrative even though it’s not the thing that happens first chronologically. I think our introductory pov being John really underscores how inevitable samdean endgame is? It squicks John out so much—much more than your average person, understandably so he’s their dad after all—so you can see all this momentum crash against the immovable object of SamandDean = each other’s everything. These boys couldn’t belong to each other more if they had matching soulmarks stamped on their asscheeks. I reread this whole story recently but I found myself rereading the initial section more than once and picking up all these details: It’s the condom that gives John pause, that convinces John that Dean is not a shifter/demon/monster who is raping Sam. It’s John walking home from the bar—for once the man acknowledges he’s too drunk to drive—that means the roar of the Impala in the motel parking lot does not announce his presence. It’s Sam getting hurt on a hunt and Dean needing to take care of him that led them to running the stupid risk of sex in the motel room to begin with. Y’all can probably tell I am a hoe for “John finds out,” “Bobby finds out,” etc as a genre because nothing beats that frission of “this is hot” juxtaposed against “this is wrong”:

“And then when he first put his hands on you – you said no. Tell me you said no the first time, Dean.” Dean shudders.

This conversation here at the beginning between John and Dean is the emotional core of the story imo. Because it’s not just John who is accusing Dean of being a monster— Dean himself has been unable to shake his doubts on that score. The fact that John presses Dean for details is almost worse than if John had just disowned him—you can see Dean squirming in his seat and trying to plead the fifth. Because John wants to know when it “started.” And that’s asking for the impossible, because this isn’t a romantic entanglement. It’s … “romantic partner” is a category with boundaries just like any other, and the whole deal with Sam and Dean is they set no boundaries on their love.

Um. I read the entire thing last night. Because I’m crazy. (Sorry @dyed-red I feel like I’m creepily stalking you lately.)

One thing I consistently admire about this author’s fics, is they’re exceptionally good at unpicking the complicated layers and dynamics between Sam and Dean, both the good and the bad, and this one (as OP indicates) is no exception.

One particular moment from the fic that’s sticking with me today is young-adult Dean having a panic attack at his part-time job after being questioned by a peevish John about teenaged-Sam’s moods and well-being lately - and the realization that their father doesn’t actually care what’s going on with Sam, insomuch as he wants Dean to “handle it”. I feel a lot of wincest and weecest fics shy away from this aspect of their relationship - the ways Dean can struggle with the overwhelming burden of his responsibility for Sam, while also loving Sam with everything he has. Dean absolutely feels a ton of pressure from both Sam and John in this fic, and the author doesn’t shy away from that.

This dynamic folds into the mutual desire he and Sam share. As Sam gets older and angrier and more miserable in their lives, he and Dean separately (they don’t overtly discuss it until much later) perceive consummation of their building attraction as the thing that will “fix” Sam, make him happy enough to stay, make everything else bearable. Sam in this fic has some significant mental spirals, and has been conditioned his entire life to turn to Dean to “make it better”. Dean has likewise been conditioned his whole life to provide for all of Sam’s physical and emotional needs, and as the fic progresses, struggles between perceiving his own desire for Sam as predatory and abusive, versus sex with Sam as something Sam needs to feel safe, whole, okay - and to stay with him. Sex with Sam is one part lust, two parts love, and at least one part caretaking on Dean’s end. It’s a very complex dynamic, but the author does a beautiful job of showcasing all the angles while keeping their love and need for each other front-and-centre.
