Let’s have a mini history lesson, my fellow Pride Knights! Typically, history is often viewed through a heteronormative lens which results in queer history being erased or withheld. One of the more speculated examples of this is seen in the study of the life of Isaac Newton. Many of us know Newton from his laws of motion and being a co-developer of calculus, with him being a renowned mathematician, physicist, astronomer, and author. But for the large part, his personal life and sexuality have mostly gone undocumented, probably due to his scientific studies taking priority over his personal life.
One rumour though, which constantly gets thrown about in regard to Newton is the thought that he died a virgin. People who hear this usually come to the conclusion that Newton was just heterosexual and could not get into sexual relationships for whatever reason. For example, it has been documented once that he sent a love letter to Lady Norris, who also resided at Cambridge University, but was ultimately rejected. Other than this love letter, there are little to no other documents of his love life. This is probably due to science and education looking at the work produced as opposed to the person who created it. But alongside the argument that Newton was heterosexual and could not form sexual relations, there are two other arguments which may have stronger implications about Newton’s personal life.
Firstly, there is reason to believe that Newton was actually gay, bisexual or pansexual, and that he did not die a virgin. There are two main reasons to believe that this is true.
