He always has, really. His feelings have always fluctuated between fondness and frustration for various reasons since fourteen, whichâ
Haâis pretty moon-y itself, he thinks, watching his moon arrange herself just oh so alluringly across their bed, while he flips his sketchbook closed.
She beams, and the words are a knowing, gentle tease: âWasting moonlight, Callum.â
Even connecting to the arcanum itself had been more than a little bittersweet: he and Rayla finally really, really talking about everything. Heâd long since forgiven her, of courseâor rather decided that there was nothing to forgive, but itâd still hurt his heart, anyway, learning the entirety of the dark parts thatâd made his brave, beautiful Rayla go off on her own for all that time. Sheâd talked about it all for him, too, letting him in deeper than maybe ever before, struggling with words and the biggest big feelings heâd ever heard her admit toâŚall so he could have a hope of understanding her arcanum, at long last.
He canât wish away the dark side, no matter how much her dark hurts her (or him). He loves her completely, because of the light and the dark. He wouldnât wish hers awayâŚand thatâd been the breakthrough.
His is ever-present, too, always there, no matter the illusion he paints. A flip-sideânot just something buried deep beneath the surface.
Heâd come out the other end of their Silvergrove vacation feeling the moon phase in his bones and understandingânot just acceptingâthat desperation was just devotionâs flip-side.
A part of loveâs ever-presence.
The first full moon since theyâve been back here at home at the Banther Lodge glows through the window, bathing herâRayla, love itselfâin a pale, bright beamâŚand as conflicted as heâs ever felt about the dark parts, heâs never doubted:
been rotisserating a silly goofy multi-scene alternate starscarper sandwich fic that's rayllum just...being DISASTERS instead of having a lovely beautiful smooth-sailing first time
and I just had a poor Rayla thought?
cw: for full moon fertility related headcanon stuff below đ
you guys wanna do some moon-synced fertility/menstrual cycle math with me? you know how the moon is new in Moonless Night? If we go with the fanon idea that Moonshadow elves ovulate on the full moon...poor bby girl gets potential first time sabotaged by her baby box đ /ref
disclaimer that obvs if she still wanted to get up to somethin' callum would be a sweetheart about it, and maybe they still would but ehhhh if I were an eighteen year old virgin I would nawt be doin' all that
man fanfiction will really have you writing the most poetic shit about â¨the moon⨠or whatever, all in service of having your blorbos get busy a few paragraphs down

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
There was no way out, it seemed. They were bound together with invisible chains, and wherever she went, she would just drag him down with her, one way or the other. Unless of course she simply didnât hurl herself into the abyss, didnât seek a last stand to atone for ⌠for everything. Unless she lived.
Could be too late for that though. She didnât expect any mercy from Viren, neither for herself nor for Callum.
So, I started a new job this week, which has been super fun but has left me a wee bit tired in the evenings (i.e. writing time and also reading time! My to read list grows...)
I am still hoping to contribute to AU-Gust, and maaaaaaybe up-date another chapter of One More Time for Raylaâs birthday đ
Week 1: Plot - S7 canon divergence. What if Callum did stay behind at the Banther Lodge while Rayla and Runaan went to the Silvergrove. One shot.
Week 2: Setting - Modern AU Bodyguard AU (will begin posting coz she's already ~10 chapters đ )
Week 3: Roles - Another chapter of Bodyguard AU
Week 4: Dynamic - Bird Sanctuary AU
Week 5: Crossover - ??? Hmm... still working on this
Posting July 21stâs rayllum day with a kiki and rayla c/mm i did with @raysspellbook back in May in preparation for the then upcoming Season 4 of The Legend of Vox Machina (which, by the way was totally awesome đââď¸)
Rayla sighed contentedly, staring at her parentsâ backs. From the sofa in the living area she had a clear view of her two fathers washing dishes together, like they used to when she was young. Every so often theyâd bump hips with each other, or lean their shoulders into one another; just small affectionate gestures to remind them that they were together again.Â
Rayla smiled and looked over at her boyfriend. Callum was sitting on the other side of the sofa, leaving a generous space between them, with his sketchbook and charcoal out. She admired him while he drew. Sometimes he was so concentrated on what he was drawing that his face would scrunch up, while other times he barely looked like he was trying. Like this was just second nature to him.Â
She looked back up at her parents, who were passing plates wordlessly between them. They were so accustomed to each other that, even after two full years apart, they hardly needed to communicate. They just worked with the rhythm of two people so in love. Would her and Callum be like this, someday? Doing dishes and laundry quietly, their love filling in the silence? Would they have a child, sitting and watching them work, wondering these same thoughts? She hoped so. She watched Runaan gently grab Ethariâs elbow.Â
âIâm going to get some fresh air quick,â the former assassin said softly, âIâll be right back.âÂ
âDonât worry, my heart, Iâm not going anywhere,â Ethari replied.Â
The two shared a brief kiss, and Runaan slipped out the front door. Rayla frowned.Â
âWhy donât we do that?â she asked, turning to face Callum again.
âHm?â Callum looked up from his work, then glanced at Ethari, confused. âYou mean the dishes? I thought your dads requested it, so that they could spend some time together.âÂ
âNot the dishes,â Rayla corrected, âThe names.âÂ
Callum frowned. âNames?âÂ
âYeah, yâknow, like pet-names.âÂ
âYouâŚwant to call me your pet?â Callumâs face turned amusingly pink.Â
Rayla shot him a sidelong glance, tucking that reaction into her brain for later.Â
âNicknames, Callum. Why donât we have nicknames for each other?âÂ
He tapped his charcoal against his chin thoughtfully. Rayla smirked as she noticed that he was holding the wrong end of it, leaving a black mark behind on his skin. She didnât say anything. It was cute.Â
âThere was that one time you called me âMr. Mage,ââ he offered up unhelpfully.Â
âI donât mean platonic nicknames, Callum, I mean like⌠cute, romantic ones.âÂ
âHm. Youâre right, we donât really have any of those.â He thought about it for a moment longer, then smiled at her. âDo you want toâŚtry some?â Â
âSure. Um, what are you drawing, babe?âÂ
Callum winced.Â
âYeah, that wasnât it,â Rayla agreed. âHow about⌠what are you drawing, love?âÂ
Callum blushed a little bit, smiling.Â
âI like that one.âÂ
âMe too.â Rayla raised her eyebrows at him. âAre you⌠going to tell me what youâre drawing?âÂ
âOh! Right,â Callum held up his sketchbook.Â
It was a beautiful sketch of his younger brother, standing proud and tall. Rayla frowned, concern knitting its way into her eyebrows.Â
âAre you alright, love?âÂ
âYeah,â he shrugged to brush her off, turning back to his work. âYeah, Iâll be fine.âÂ
She kept her eyes on him, but stayed quiet. She knew that sometimes talking about things took time. Callum smiled.Â
âI think you were right about nicknames,â he said, eyes still on his sketchbook, âThat felt⌠nice.âÂ
She smiled. âIâm glad. Itâs your turn now, though.âÂ
He looked up, surprised.Â
âWhat, I canât just call you âloveâ too?âÂ
âWell you could, and I wonât stop you if you do, but this way youâll have options.âÂ
He nodded. He face scrunched up in concentrated thought. Rayla grinned. It was always adorable when he did that. A few seconds later his expression softened. He looked up at her; eyes bright, but melancholy.Â
âMy stepdad used to call my mom his light,â he said softly.Â
Rayla stilled. Callum rarely talked about his parents. Whenever he did, his voice was filled with such reverence. It felt intimate to Rayla. The details he held were sacred to him; hearing them was like being invited to the most special place of worship.Â
âWould you like that, my light?âÂ
Rayla blushed. She had thought it would feel cheesy or over the top, but it actually made her feel tingly inside. Like he was all hers. Callum grinned.Â
âYou liked that one, didnât you?âÂ
âMaybeâŚâ Rayla admitted.
Callum set his sketchbook and charcoal down on the table in front of the couch.Â
âMy light,âÂ
He slid across the sofa, closing the gap between them. Rayla felt her cheeks grow redder.
âMy truth,âÂ
He grabbed her hand, lifting it to his face and planting a kiss inside her palm.Â
âMy world,âÂ
He wrapped his other hand around her waist, pulling her closer. The tingly sensation grew, the way it always did when he was this close.Â
âMy everything,â he whispered, inches away from her face now.Â
Rayla let her eyes flutter closed, anticipating the kiss and the rush of warmth that always accompanied it. She leaned forward slowly.Â
Someone cleared their throat.Â
Callum immediately jumped back, returning to his earlier position farther away from her. Rayla glared fiercely at her dad. Runaan turned slightly to address Callum.Â
âYou have charcoal on your chin.âÂ
Runaan walked away. Callumâs eyes went wide and his cheeks turned red. He quickly raised his hands to his chin, then groaned as his fingers pulled away with black smudged on them. He threw his head back against the couch in defeat and looked over at her across the distance between them.Â
âYour dads probably think Iâm a loser, huh?âÂ
âMaybe,â Rayla giggled, âbut youâre my loser.âÂ
Callumâs mouth opened, then shut wordlessly.Â
âIâm⌠not sure how I feel about that one,â he admitted after a moment.Â
âYouâll get used to it.â Rayla reached over and grabbed his hand, grazing his knuckles with her lips.Â
âLove,â she added, mumbling it against his fingers. Â
His cheeks went delightfully red again, and Rayla smiled.Â

in which Harrow's been found and the remaining quasar diamond has been stolen

Rayla doesnât think much of the lock of hair missing from Callumâs head.
In fact, she hadnât even been sure that it was missing until she tunnels her fingers through to his scalpânot an uncommon touch between themâand sees the way he shifts away so immediately. His head lifts from her lap, his hand flies to the back of his neck, his eyes cut away from hersâ
âYou chicken out from a haircut or what?
âOh, did I?â he answersâhuh? âI meanâoh, right. I am. I mean, I did. I cut it. It was, uhâŚsticking up kind of funny this morning and wellâŚyou know me! I got a little frustrated, and thenâŚbefore I could even stop myself, snip!
He freezes in a theatrical shrug and maybe the least believable grinâgrimace?âon his face that sheâs ever seen.
âUhâŚrightââ She squints doubtfully, butâŚprobably itâs just somethingâsomehowâmore embarrassing than that little story heâd just made up. âSnip.â
Rayla tugs him back down into her lap, prepared to refuse resistance that doesnât comeâŚand blends the jagged edges of the clump heâd cut in with the other locks at the crown of his head.
She swipes the white streak out of his eyes.
Itâs been a lot on him lately, she knowsâeverything with Ezran about their dad. The stolen quasar diamondâŚ
Heâd tell her if it mattered.
She definitely notices, though, the bandage that appears over his hand the next time he returns back to their suite at the Lodge less than whole.
This time, though, Callum has an answer she believes.
Heâs steady when she takes his palm and unwraps the strip of linen over the heel of his handâsteady while they both look at the clean red slice.
âI was sharpening my charcoalâdown in the study earlier.â he explains as she ghosts a finger over it. He breathes in a hiss when she then passes a blotted towel of alcohol across the woundâŚbut only just under his breath. Heâll live, she decides, dabbing at the cut, assured, at least, that it doesnât need anything more than a bandage and a kiss. âSlipped.â
She believes it, too, for a good long ten minutes. Really, why would she doubt it? Sure, her dorky mage is a little less clumsy these daysâŚbut itâs not like she hasnât seen similar scars littered over his hands, all by that same cause.
Sheâd have kept believing it, tooâŚif not for the gloves.
Heâd gone for a bath, sheâd been picking up his clothes, andâ
Shouldnât his glove have a gashâand bloodâtoo? Since when did he justâŚrandomly take them off? Theyâd started as an art thing, keeping charcoal off his hands, heâd said once when sheâd teased himâ
Rayla knows she shouldnât coax him into another lie. She should just outright ask him, butâ
âGuess youâll have to dig out a backup pairâhuh?â she wonders when he comes back from the washroom, making it seem as though sheâd just then been stacking his clothes up for him, like she hadnât looked at the gloves closely. âShame.â she sighs, eyeing his reaction.
To his credit, he doesnât flinch as she picks them upâdoesnât take them out of her hands or anything.
He justâŚwaits to tell his lie, until she sets them down again.
âYeah, Iâll, uhâŚget those fixed too, though.â
âI have other things to be mended, tooâthereâs a basket over there.â
He adds them on top of her long-tattered cloak and an old orange pajama shirt neither of them wants to part with.
Theyâre not there in the morning.
Smart.
Heâs learning, she thinks, biting her tongue.
Itâs not anger, even, thatâs churning in her gutâjust worry, mostly. Why lie? She already knows he and Ez have been arguing, she already knows itâs all circled back around to them saving Runaan, and she already knows that none of this would be happening if theyâd just caught Claudia that night when sheâd made off with the remaining diamondâwhy make things more complicated, now with her?
Heâs not smart enough to lock a door, though, apparently.
She hadnât even been suspicious. Sheâd just rapped her knuckles once against the door to his study, looking for him for bed, easing it open like she has a hundred times beforeâ
âHey, Callumââ
âto find Callum shirtless, a knifeâher knife, swiped from the place where her armor hangs behind their doorâturned on himself, pointed at his hips.
âRayla!â he jumps, dropping the blade and showing his hands. âWhat, uhââ
Every single nerve freezes, locking her body tight, and she goes painfully, eerily stillâlike one wrong move will spell disaster. What was heâ
âItâs not what it looks like!â
She doesnât know whatâs worseâthe lies, the stealing, theâŚhurting himselfâor what she fears it all means.
âAnd what does it look like, Callum?â She tries to keep her voice measured, calmâbut it pitches toward disbelief, toward panic, toward disgust. âYou, trying to gut yourself in the middle ofââ
Itâs then that she sees the open book on his desk, and sheâs only just fast enough to bolt all the way across to the table and snatch it from in front of him.

For breath: scrap of a Sky creature (a lock, a feather)
For bone: nail of a nobleman (an ounce exactly)
For blood: essence of an Ocean creature (a vial full)
For body: skin of the spellcaster (an inch or so will do)
Rayla doesnât think: she snaps the book shut. It goes with her.
