week 1, day 1: 1123 total

“Like I said, zero issues from me,” Callum smiled what he hoped was a normal smile, but from the uneasy look on Rayla’s face, he assumed he failed in that regard. “It was kinda fun seeing you kick Soren’s ass—”

A small smile crept onto Rayla’s face, though it looked like she was working hard to suppress it.

Encouraged, he continued. “He’s a big guy, but you’re obviously qualified so I’m not surprised you could do that. Like I said I have no issues with a female bodyguard, we just thought your name was Ray, which is I guess is usually a male name? But female bodyguard is good.” He nodded enthusiastically. “Great really!”

The smile began to vanish from Rayla’s face.

Nope, he’d ventured into creepy.

“Or, neutral, I suppose. You know, I don’t have a preference. Just, not concerned about gender when it comes to bodyguards.” Okay, surely, he was back on track, right? “Or in general either. When it comes to anything. Everyone can do whatever they want.”

She's focused on task, checking perimeters, vetting UberEats drop offs and the like.

While Callum is excited to be enjoying university and freedom. Wanting to explore the city and check out new places and parks and museums.

Which, fine, she'll allow but cautiously and under intense surveillance... until she begins to relax too.

To let her guard down....

Modern times.

Callum, technically royalty from a small state who just wants to live the a normal college experience. He’s been through high school with obvious bodyguards watching his every move and hated it. It made it difficult to make real friends and he felt lonely and isolated the entire time.

He desperately wants to go abroad to study, to get away from the whole prince thing, but his parents are not exactly excited about him being unguarded. He’s had issues with an obsessive fan in the past and everyone understandably has concerns. Sarai proposes they find him a bodyguard to pose as a friend. A roommate and classmate.

Callum reluctantly agrees. It definitely sounds better than having a bunch of old guys hanging around him.

Enter Rayla.

She can easily pass for a regular college student, while keeping a close eye on him. And luckily, they seem to get along really well.

Perhaps too well, in the eyes of some.

Old News

Rayla lay motionless on the damp linen, trying not to breathe. With the breathing came the pain. She had been hot before, her whole body a furnace, causing her to throw back the covers while the sheets had been soaked in sweat. Now she was shivering, curled up around the pain in her guts that periodically flared up to overwhelm her.

It was bright.

Too bright.

The light was attacking him. Assaulting his brain and maybe his stomach, because that felt awful too.

Scrunching his nose in disgust, Callum attempted to bury deeper into the blankets before starting in surprise.

He wasn’t alone.

Freezing in place, he opened his eyes, glancing around as he tried to figure out where the hell he was.

Not in his apartment, that was immediately apparent.

No, he hadn’t slept in his apartment in ages, but this wasn’t his studio either.

Forcing his mushy brain to work, he tried to piece the previous few days back together.

He’d left Katolis, rushed to across the country to find Claudia, to figure out what the hell was going on with her.

He was staying at the ludicrous lodge, but this wasn’t it either.

This was clearly a bedroom in a very normal house.

A… girl’s bedroom, if he wasn’t wrong.
