Not writing for yourself or writing for attention, but a secret third thing (writing for an audience of one beloved mutual and reaching for characters and ships and themes on the fandom spice rack that you've never cooked with before).
"But I don't like the ending/the character/the plot point. I would have done it differently."
Yes. Good. Go get a pen. This is where it begins.
Smoke Signals canon to me
There's an awful trend in reading that's this CinemaSins kind of rejection of abstract concepts and suspension of disbelief, that makes people say it's bad writing when authors use descriptions that aren't immediately one to one with physical reality.
Like it's bad when a "tattoo is undulating" (as opposed to... "drawn in a wave like pattern on the skin"?), or when hair is "wet wheat from a late Summer field" (as opposed to "sort of brownish light yellow that dries lighter, but is not actual wheat stalks growing on someone's head but kind of reminiscent of the color and texture"?), or when when ice cream tastes like midnight at the fair" (as opposed to "ice cream flavour bringing back memories of undefined ice cream flavours that are individually popular but always tied to a memory of late evening at the fair ground and probably smelling vaguely like popcorn and sugar"?).
Please. We have to get back to understanding abstract descriptions that evoke feelings and memories and mental images or things we haven't experienced yet. This hyper utilitarian way of reading and judging text is killing fiction. it's robbing you of experiencing things you haven't actually personally experienced.
no ai usage over here. youâre gonna get my shitty authentic writing whether you like it or not

feeling guilty over not working on your fic is so silly if you think about like why are you stressing over the hobby you do in your free time for fun lol wip not whip
âAriel sold her voice for legs just because of a guyâ
Meanwhile Ariel with legs;
Ariel already loved the human world long before meeting Eric (you donât get a collection like hers overnight)Â and when she finally got a chance to explore it, she took it.
Ursula made it more about Eric than Ariel ever did.
and i mean hell this has been talked about before in more depth than i can, but when people complain about how the ending was changed (the original fairytale does not give ariel a happy ending, she dies trying to protect the prince), i think about the fact that this was written by a gay man in the 1980s
and i think itâs entirely valid (and gives her an extremely strong connection to the queer community) to change the story so she doesnât die because of who she loves
Triton made escape a necessity. Once someone goes to the point of destroying your possessions in a violent rampage, there is no staying and sticking it out, thereâs no safety. (And Ariel, even in Ursulaâs lair, gave Triton more thought than he deserved at the time.) Nowhere in the ocean she could go and be safe. Everyoneâs always âwhy donât they just leave :|â in abusive situations until the leaving is not something they find 100% worthy of approval.
Ursula made it about Eric. She didnât have to. Ariel had to get out from under Tritonâs thumb, it could have been literally anything. Ursula took advantage of a desperate victim for her own agenda. Realistic predatory behavior toward a vulnerable person.
And also
Thereâs always the âEric didnât want her until she was silent and meekâ criticism - FIRST OF ALL he started out looking for a woman who wasnât silent, and second of all what part of the carriage driving bit (or any of her other actions on land) is meek, exactly?
People above have noted the queer subtext. Now, on the subject of Ariel being willing to leave her family, aside from the baseline âthis is an abusive environment and she was not safe thereâ angle I already mentioned, consider: Arielâs father made it clear he would stop at nothing to crush and tear down who she was and replace it with what he wanted her to be. Now - what demographic might that resonate with? And given Ashmanâs involvement, do you think that was a coincidence?
there has been scholarly discussion about the idea that the og little mermaid story, where she dies at the end, was written as a queer allegory.
so taking that into account⌠there is something very touching about taking this story from hans christian andersen from beyond the grave and being like âthings are different now. they get to be happy. she gets to live.â
also in re: âEric didnât want her until she was silent and meekâ the meek partâs been discussed but can we please talk about how when he first met her he thought she wasnât the girl with the voice that he was trying to find and was disappointed, but that he slowly fell for her anyway? Heâd explicitly wanted Ariel WITH her voice, but came to love her without it.
The bit about Howard Ashman being queer is finally giving me some glimmer of understanding of why the teenaged girl mermaid is named âAriel.â Because, although the Disney movie single-handedly changed popular perception thereafter, Ariel is a boyâs name. Howard Ashman absolutely knew that.
(Ariel in Shakespeareâs The Tempest also has male pronouns, in case anyone was struggling to remember.)

you're a teacher! :O I have a character who teaches young kids (moon cubs) and has a passion of early childcare education. do you have any advice for writing a character/career field like this?
ooh, what a fun ask!! Iâve been teaching for about 10 years now. I do teach kids that are a bit older (middle school), but I imagine the stuff in this post goes for most people that work with kids of all ages!!
Thereâs this quote that informs SO much of my practiceâ
Itâs so very important to be conscious of the classroom environment and tone youâre setting. Maybe this comes more naturally to early childhood educators because they usually spend the whole day with the same group of kiddos, but I teach ELA to ~120 kids over the course of a day and it can be very easy to get so caught up in WHAT youâre teaching that you lose sight of the biggerâand more important!âpicture. I think when teachers are just starting out thereâs a tendency to look outside of themselves for who/what to blame when there are problems butâŚwe really have SO much power in simple things like our tone, our energy, our attitude. These things donât SEEMS monumental but once you realize the power they have, it makes a HUGE difference.
Modeling is also so super important to do, especially for littles! Sure, I model academic skills as I teach them, but modeling social-emotional skills is also SUPER effective. For example, my first go-to if I hear an unkind exchange that doesnât really need to be escalated to discipline (especially if a kid has demonstrated some SEL needs in the past) is to rephrase parts of the conversation in a more appropriate way. I donât make a big deal out of itâsometimes it can even seem like Iâm kidding around. My aim is two fold: show a better way to interact (kinder) AND demonstrating to other kids listening that, hey, we donât say unkind things here but we also get easy chances to correct our behavior. I used to tend as a younger teacher to not correct kids publicly at ALL for fear of embarrassing them, but it is possible to correct without embarrassment if you have good relationships and avoid power struggle.
Last thing Iâll explain fully, because I think most else I have to say is probably more academic/content-area specific to ELA: It really is all about relationships. I get on SWIMMINGLY with kids who have discipline records because I go out of my way to make sure those kids know Iâm on their side. If Iâm correcting their behaviorâin the subtle and I PROMISE kind way I doâthe first time I see them upset about it or sometimes even if theyâre NOT upset about it, I have a quiet conversation AFTER the fact (stop by their lunch table or casually in the hallâŚonce everyone is cool-headed and de-escalated) explaining WHYâand usually that WHY is that I want to stop this now before it gets to a point where it has a negative impact on the student or others. Iâm on their side. Thatâs the point of the conversation. (I teach with some realllllly grumpy teachers so there are lots of these conversations where Iâm helping them manage other teachers expectations too⌠đ but thatâs a rant for another time.)
A few more little blurbs:
All behavior is communication.
Let upset kids de-escalate before talking through a situationâpower struggles donât help anyone.
Kids canât learn (or canât learn as effectively) if they are dysregulated (which can include physical and emotional thingsâhunger, sleep, fear, stress)
Kids need to be pushed just outside their comfort zone (zone of proximal development) to learn and grow. Push too far, and thatâll be cognitive overload and frustration.
The younger the kid, the more help with executive functioning skills theyâll need, so learning activities will be broken down into smaller chunks. Note, this is about breaking down the steps to get there, not about making the end goal easier. Students with different learning needs often have tasks broken down differently but are still held to grade-level skill masteryâŚthey just had more scaffolds and support to get there! (Sometimes this is not true, of course. Modified courses do exist as well.)
Executive functioning must be taught like any other skillset. (My 6th graders have to be taught how to use a planner, for example.)
