I know I was rambling about this in notes a few days ago, but I was just talking to my best friend about how you sometimes get this hand-wringing about how Kirk/Spock fans don't appreciate the importance of platonic friendship!!!!! and, quite apart from me being very strongly of the opinion that they both have close platonic friendships with McCoy, my actual 2nd-favorite relationship in Star Trek is one that I truly do believe is 100% platonic:
I have compiled some helpful further evidence!!!
"The Man Trap":
UHURA: I don't believe it. SPOCK: Explain. UHURA: You explain. That means that somebody is dead and you just sit there. It could be Captain Kirk. He's the closest thing you have to a friend.
"The Naked Time":
KIRK: At least try cutting him off! UHURA [frustrated]: Sir, if I could cut him off, don't you think I—! RILEY: ♪ I'll take you home again, Kathleen— ♪ UHURA: Yes, sir, I'll keep trying. KIRK [penitent]: Sorry.
"Arena":
[After his battle with the Gorn and choice of mercy, Kirk is suddenly zapped back onto the bridge] UHURA: Captain! Are you all right? KIRK: I don't know. I don't know.
"The Changeling":
KIRK: That unit was my chief engineer. [To Uhura] Lieutenant. Lieutenant, are you all right? [Uhura stares] KIRK: Sickbay. What did you do to her?
"Mirror, Mirror":
KIRK: Lieutenant. UHURA: Yes, sir. KIRK: Get to your post. Run today's communication from Starfleet Command. I want to know my exact orders and options, if any. UHURA: Yes, sir. KIRK: Bones. UHURA [pausing on her way out, looking up at him anxiously]: Captain, I'm— KIRK [walking over to her and grasping her shoulders]: Uhura, you're the only one who can do it. [His tone gentles] I'll be right there.
"I, Mudd":
UHURA: No, they're lying. It's a trick. Dr. McCoy injected something into Harry Mudd to make him look sick. It's a trick to get back on board and sabotage the ship. ALICE 1: Your request is refused. KIRK: Uhura, why did you tell her? UHURA: Because I want an android body. I want immortality. I'll live forever, captain. I'll be young and beautiful. ALICE 1: You have been of assistance. We shall fulfill our obligation. UHURA: Thank you. ALICE 1: The programming for your body will be completed before we leave. [Alice leaves] KIRK: Uhura ... [Stalking over to her and seizing her shoulders, then grinning and lifting her in the air] Beautiful! UHURA [laughing]: I half believed it myself.
"Friday's Child":
UNKNOWN VOICE: We are under heavy attack by Klingon vessels. Two convoy ships are already damaged. We must have help. Enterprise, acknowledge. Please acknowledge. Repeat— SULU: Interception course computed and laid in, sir. SCOTT: Prepare to take us out of orbit, Mr. Sulu. SULU: Aye, sir. UHURA: Scotty, the captain— SCOTT: We have a distress call from a Federation ship under attack. That's where our duty lies.
"The Gamesters of Triskelion":
LARS [to Uhura]: I am your drill thrall. I am called Lars. KIRK: What do you want from her?
[Offscreen, Uhura screams] KIRK: Lieutenant, are you all right? Uhura! Lieutenant! Lieutenant, are you all right? Lieutenant, answer me! Lieutenant! What's happening to Lieutenant Uhura? Lieutenant, are you all right?
[Lars backs off for the moment and immediately afterwards, Kirk is interrupted by Shahna, his own female guard; without hesitation he jumps to charming/flirting with Shahna, very obviously trying to gather information and find a way to escape with his crew. Later, the still trapped Kirk, Uhura, and Chekov are ordered to practice combat against a less impressive fellow thrall:]
GALT: You begin, Uhura. UHURA: No! GALT: It is not allowed to refuse a training exercise. UHURA: I don't care whether it's allowed or not. I will not do it. KIRK: None of us will do it, Galt.
GALT: Kloog will administer correction. Uhura, take your place on the triad. [Lars grabs her wrists] Tie her. KIRK: No. No! I am responsible for the actions of my people.
[At the end of the episode, Kirk tells Shahna that she can't leave on the Enterprise and needs to remain with her people now that they're free and can develop and learn properly, but he's sorry about the quasi-seduction:]
KIRK: I did what was necessary. Someday, I hope you'll understand.
"A Private Little War":
KIRK: Yes, I'm aware of that, Mr. Scott. CHEKOV: And, sir, the fact Earth took twelve centuries doesn't mean they had to. UHURA: We've seen different development at rates on different planets. SCOTT: And were the Klingons behind it, why didn't they give them breechloaders? CHEKOV: Or machine guns? UHURA: Or old-style hand lasers? KIRK [sharply]: I did not invite a debate. [pause] I'm sorry. I'm worried about Spock and concerned about what's happened.
"And the Children Shall Lead":
UHURA: I see my death. A long death. Disease and pain. I see my death. KIRK: Lieutenant, there's nothing there. UHURA: Oh, God. Captain, don't let it be.
"The Tholian Web":
SPOCK: At certain brief periods of time, an area of their space overlaps an area of ours. That is a time of interphase, during which we can connect with the Defiant's universe. UHURA: Mr. Spock? We will be able to retrieve the captain at that time, won't we?
[Kirk, trapped in the interphase, is for the first time briefly visible—to Uhura:]
UHURA: Captain! Captain Kirk, we thought you were— [He vanishes] UHURA: Spock! Mr.— Oh, doctor, I've just seen the captain. MCCOY: Of course you have, Uhura. We would all like to— UHURA [insistently]: He's alive. He's alive, doctor. MCCOY: Of course. UHURA: Believe me, I did see him. I did. Spock! Mr. Spock! MCCOY: We're going to Sickbay. UHURA: Doctor. Doctor, I'm not going mad. I did see Captain Kirk.
[Later:]
UHURA: Mr. Spock didn't believe me either, did he, doctor? MCCOY: Well, nobody saw him but you, Uhura. UHURA: Then I didn't really see him, did I? MCCOY: I don't think so.
[Still later, after Uhura has been told she's going insane and is crying:]
MCCOY: [unstraps her from the biobed] UHURA [wonderingly]: Am I all right, doctor? MCCOY: Yes, Uhura, you're fine. UHURA: Then what I saw— MCCOY: It was real. UHURA: Captain Kirk's ... [A smile trembles on her mouth] alive? [She sits up, laughing]
[Towards the end:]
CHEKOV: Captain, we have destroyed the Tholians' web. SPOCK: Negative, Ensign. Utilizing ship's power has thrown us clear of it. Compute the distance from the original location. CHEKOV: At once, sir. UHURA: Have we lost the captain? SPOCK: We shall soon see, lieutenant.
"Plato's Stepchildren":
[Chapel, Spock, Kirk, and Uhura are being puppeteered by the Platonians, with Chapel-Spock and Kirk-Uhura forced into embracing and on the point of being made to kiss]
UHURA [miserably]: I'm so very frightened. KIRK: That's the way they want you to feel. It makes them think that they're alive. UHURA: I know it, but I wish I could stop trembling. KIRK: Try not to think of them. Try. UHURA: I'm thinking. I'm thinking of all the times on the Enterprise when I was scared to death and I would see you so busy at your commands. And I would hear your voice from all the parts of the ship and my fears would fade. And now they are making me tremble. But I'm not afraid. I am not afraid.
[They're forced to kiss. Then the Platonians force Kirk and Spock to attack the women with weapons—a hot poker and a whip. Kirk cracks his whip before it can hit Uhura and, helped by telekinetic chemicals, he and Spock break free of the Platonians' control.]
"Elaan of Troyius":
SPOCK: Captain, the Dohlman is dissatisfied with the quarters provided. UHURA: What's the matter with them, Mr. Spock? SPOCK: I do not know, but all the Elasians seem most irrational. UHURA: I gave up my quarters because I— KIRK: Yes, I appreciate your sacrifice, Lieutenant Uhura. I'll talk to her myself.
ELAAN: Am I a soft Troyian fawn to need pillows to sit on? And these ridiculous female trappings. They are an offense to my eyes. KIRK: My communications officer generously vacated the rooms hoping you would find it satisfactory.
Honorable mentions go to two different occasions when Kirk thinks everyone's going to die, since Spock and Uhura are the only ones mentioned both times.
"Space Seed":
KIRK: They have my ship, discarding their own worthless vessel. Only moments of air left on the bridge now. Commendations recommended for Lieutenant Uhura, Technicians First Class Thule and Harrison, Lieutenant Spinelli and, of course, Mr. Spock. I take full responsibility.
"The Immunity Syndrome":
KIRK: If we should fail in our attempt to destroy it, or be unable to free ourselves, I wish to record my recommendations for the following personnel, that they receive special citation: Lieutenant Commander Leonard McCoy, Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott, officers Chekov, Kyle, Uhura, and my highest commendation for Commander Spock, science officer, who gave his life in the performance of his duty.
—and also honorable mention goes to the movie version of their relationship! The movie versions of the characters aren't always very consistent with TOS in my opinion, but they do remember the ironclad Kirk-Uhura rapport.
In The Motion Picture, at a point where literally everyone in Kirk's life is implied to have either ditched him or has serious skepticism about his qualifications, motives, and insistence on the urgency of [checks hand] preventing the obliteration of every person on Earth, we then get Uhura:
KIRK: Assemble the crew on the Recreation Deck at 0400 hours. I want to show them what we're facing. SULU: He wanted her [the Enterprise] back. He got her! ENSIGN: And Captain Decker? He's been with the ship every minute of her refitting. UHURA [sharply]: Ensign, the possibilities of our returning from this mission in one piece may have just doubled.
The Wrath of Khan:
KIRK: Meaning you can't even beam us back? SPOCK [on intercom]: Not at present. KIRK: Captain Spock, if you don't hear from us within one hour, your orders are to restore what power you can, take the Enterprise to the nearest Starbase and alert Starfleet command as soon as you're out of jamming range. UHURA [on intercom]: Sir, we won't leave you behind!
The Search for Spock:
LIEUTENANT: Well, maybe that's okay for someone like you whose career is winding down. But me, I need some challenge in my life, some adventure ... maybe even just a surprise or two. UHURA [after a cold stare at him]: You know what they say: be careful what you wish for. You may get it. KIRK [to Uhura]: Good evening, Commander. Is everything ready [for transport]? UHURA: Step into my parlor, gentlemen. LIEUTENANT: That's Admiral Kirk, my God! UHURA: Very good for you, lieutenant.
[Later, the skeleton crew of the Enterprise lands on Vulcan, requests permission through Uhura, and personally arrives with Spock's body. Uhura hurries over to Kirk and he holds her, Uhura pressing her head against his shoulder for a brief moment.]
The Voyage Home:
[On the bridge, after Uhura has transported back to the ship, leaving the obviously Russian Chekov in a US military base in the 80s]
KIRK: Any luck? UHURA: Nothing. Admiral, I should never have left him. KIRK: You did what was necessary.
So yeah, wild how people don't care about the pristine beauty of platonic friendship when it's a man and a woman, but as far as I'm concerned, this is the god-tier holy bond of platonic friendship.
