As many of my followers know, i had a severe hip dislocation in April.* This requires surgery to repair, and recovery will have me on bedrest for several weeks. It looks like surgery likely won't happen until this autumn.
I'm raising money to acquire the laptop i'm crowdfunding on my Throne list here. This laptop will provide me with the means to write my book, and access to entertainment in general. There are other things on the list that will help keep me occupied as well. You may choose to purchase the listed items on my behalf, with the option of remaining anonymous.
In order to acquire necessary funds, i'm opening commissions. I will work on these until i can't. What i don't complete prior to surgery will have to wait until until after i recover. If you buy a commission, this is something you need to understand. If i have surgery this summer, i may not be back in the sewing room until this winter. You could be waiting for several months for your commission.
Now, that being said, let's get to the good stuff!
Pay What You Want - starts at $57 USD, what you receive won't be seen until it arrives. What you pay will influence what i choose to make, so beware this is a bit of a gamble.
Mug Rug - starts at $62 USD, 6x8 to 12x12 inches. Foundation paper piecing is an option. These are large enough for a mug and snack.
Single serving dining set - starts at $98 USD, and includes one placemat and matchint coaster. Foundation paper piecing is an option.
Set of four coasters - starts at $112 USD, with the option of adding more coasters to the set. Foundation paper piecing is also an option.
Table runner - starts at $246 USD, with the option of using insulated batting for this to serve as a long hot pad. Foundation paper piecing is also available.
Four piece placemat set - starts at $246 USD, with the options of adding a set of coasters and a table runner for a full collection. Foundation paper piecing is available as well.
Mini quilt - starts at $281 USD, and foundation paper piecing is an option.
Pine tree wallhanging - $292 USD, and can serve as an alternative for a yuletide tree. I have one, in pink, blue, and purple, and my ornaments are pins and buttons.
Potted plants wallhanging - $464 USD, and made using mostly scraps.
Just the quilt top - starts at $481 USD, with options for larger sizes. You will receive the finished top and will have to either do the quilting yourself or hire someone to do it for you. If you wish for me to use foundation paper piecing, pay twice the amount and mention you want me to use FPP and the size range. If there is a pattern you would like me to use, feel free to ask but I promise nothing.
*It caused something called a flap tear on the front of my right hip. A 4cm cyst developed next to it and just inside the edge of the joint. It has made it virtually impossible to sit upright for more tham 10 minutes at a time due to this section if my hip pinching the tear and cyst. I have pain tolerance high enough to scare my doctor and physical therapists, and the pain sitting upright causes is enough to bring me to tears.
see this is exactly what I'm talking about. this labour is so incredibly invisibilised that there are real human beings, walking about amongst us, leading normal lives, etc., who earnestly believe that machines can make an item of clothing from start to finish.
Hey just in case someone on here doesnât quite understand how labor intensive making a garment is, here is a list of things that (to the best of my knowledge) cannot be done by machine alone, from a costumer/tailor in training
Cutting - in my opinion, the most labor intensive part of the process. The amount of time/effort needed varies depending on the pattern and if seam allowance is included or marked separately, but no matter what this process can not be done by machine. Each and every panel and piece of fabric that goes into a garment must be cut by hand by a person.
Pinning/clipping - pinning (or clipping) is the stage at which you align the pieces you are going to be stitching together and hold them together with â you guessed it! â either pins or clips. This can not be done by machine.
Stitching - the actual sewing. This can be done by a sewing machine, but that machine still needs to be operated by a human being.
Ironing/pressing - two words that mean the same thing. The iron itself is a machine, but once again, it needs to be operated by a human being.
Finishing - depending on the technique you use, there are certain finishing techniques that can only be done by hand. But, letâs assume weâre talking about fast fashion, which is usually just finished with a simple overlock/serger. Once again: these machines need to be operated by people.
These are just the basic steps to making a garment, and donât include textile arts that I am not as knowledgeable about, such as weaving, knitting, and crochet. Also, it is important to note that there are a lot of things that can only be done by hand, such as certain stitches and decorative techniques.
Also, the machinery being operated in textile factories is not equivalent to a domestic sewing machine. Weâre talking about one of these guys:
See that gray cylinder under the table, behind the knee pedal? Thatâs the motor. These machines can sew through your fingers bones and all and not even stop. The people in these factories and sweatshops are operating heavy machinery, and are subject to all the risk that comes with that in addition to all of the work I mentioned above.
Please respect textile workers and continue the fight to eliminate the use of sweatshops and exploited labor in the fashion industry!
Keeping in mind a lot of these workers have quotas to meet, so they're expected to sew like 10 pairs of jeans in an hour when it would probably take me (a decent sewist) the whole hour to sew a single pair. They are very skilled workers AND as with much of factory work, subjected to extreme pressure to move faster and faster until they are putting life and limb at risk to meet arbitrary targets.
And then you complain about your clothes having loose threads.
(This post also doesn't cover grading & fit & design & sampling & fabric selection processes, which are also time-intensive and require extensive human skill! Though I do suspect grading & fit are being left by the wayside in a lot of these factories now in the rush to meet demand.)
If youâre not a trans woman you need to get way more comfortable with trans women talking about issues that donât affect you. If youâre not a trans man you need to be ok with trans men talking about their own experiences that donât affect you. If youâre not non binary you need to stop being weird about nonbinary people talking about the poor treatment they get for being nonbinary. If youâre not intersex you need to stop inserting yourself into conversations that arenât about you and begging to be centered. Everyone get less self centered NOW!!!!
And get paid for special trainings.... Like Drs appointments or entertaining the 'well meaning advice' that you've heard a million times from someone with zero experience.

Its weird how you get more disabled over time. Like, most people i know with a disability actually have like eight disabilities and a lot of them slowed up later as a result of compensating for the earlier ones. This brought to you by me filling out a demographics form and wondering when i got to the point of checking that many damn boxes
âYou get used to itâ true but misleading because someday your back problems are gonna inexplicably cause stomach problems. And then you get used to the stomach problems but your thumbs start hurting because you had to do so much work on your phone lying in weird positions while waiting for the stomach problems to go away. And there are way more distractions on your phone too so while you always had adhd this just makes it more annoying/prevalent-

ive heard the argument that transitioning is a "voluntary surgery" and so its not necessary. while its true that medical transition is an elective surgery (all elective surgery means is that youre not going to die immediately if you dont have it now, as opposed to emergency surgery), most surgeries are elective. still, ive seen people argue, "would you let someone cut off a limb if they didn't want it?" and id say, yes. ive seen it done before
ive worked in hospitals for a long time, and years ago i saw a patient very frequently. he came in once every month or so, inpatient. one day he told me what he kept coming in for. he had a knee replacement, but it kept rejecting. so the hospital would take it out, keep him, and then put it back in. he told me that he was fighting to just have it amputated. he said he was in his 70s and he just didnt have enough time anymore to spend it all in the hospital. he said that he felt he could live a better and more fulfilling life for the years he had left if they just took the leg off. he could get a prosthetic and just not have to go to the hospital all the time. he said that the doctors were fighting him on it but that was what he wanted. i said that i understood, and that i hoped he could get that amputation
anyway, some time passed, and i saw him again. i asked whats up, he was beaming and said, "i got it done! they took the leg off!" i was like, "hell yeah man, how are you feeling?" and he said "well it hurts right now but im not gonna have to come here all the time anymore." he left the hospital some time later, and i never saw him again, which is all you can hope for when you work in a hospital
he also had an elective surgery, a "voluntary" surgery. he chose to have an amputation because he was suffering with the limb intact. and thats really what we're doing too. yes, transition surgeries are elective, but that doesnt mean that theyre not necessary to improve the quality of our lives
idk. i told my dad about this years ago, and my dad said he couldnt understand choosing that. but i could. and i hope hes still out of the hospital. i hope he never goes back
I donât have time to unpack my full thoughts on the whole argument of âyou shouldnât be a burden to the healthcare systemâ but I would like to chime in on it:
so, all athletes should immediately stop playing sports. construction workers, anyone with jobs that put them at risk, they need to find different employment. people with uteruses shouldnât ever get pregnant, either. actually you know what? donât enter a car or vehicle at all! and donât even get me started on old people. what age do we think they should just give it up & throw in the towel? 50? 60? after that they become way too burdensome. itâs a problem.

I think I'm gonna make this my go-to story. It's not the worst I've ever heard, which is an asset because people won't believe you if you tell them the actual bad stuff those people do. And it just perfectly sums up the casual arrogance everyone working in mental health seems to have. The way they treat you as inherently Lesser for being in their care.
If they can't even handle basic, easily verified shit like "I'm a lawyer" they are never going to believe you when you tell them that you know how to manage a condition you've been dealing with for decades better than they can or will.
And then there's Alexander Morris, who was put in a straitjacket, called racial slurs, and denied treatment for his potentially life-threatening heart condition when he told them he was the lead singer of the band he was lead singer of.

They almost let this man die in a straight jacket simply because they were too racist. And then when they realize their "mistake", they tell him that his life is worth a 25$ supermarket gift card. Of course he's suing them for $75,000 as he should but like. Can you imagine how insulted he must've been. The 4 Tops were one of the top Motown bands of all time. You can be at the top of the music scene and still, they'll kill you because you're black. And they'll use fake claims about mental illness and "aggression" to justify it
& to be clear: none of this is good for anyone. actually delusional people, people who actually hear voices or see things, do not deserve to be treated like this. there is nothing about a person harmlessly believing something fantastical (or which sounds fantastical to you) that requires you to put them in a straightjacket and drug them or deny them necessary drugs. Black mentally ill people do not deserve to be tortured and murdered in a hospital for being Black and mentally ill.
this kind of system is a weapon which can be pointed at anyone. in order to prevent shit like this from happening, we also need to deconstruct how we view mentally ill people, including people who are delusional and hallucinate, and what we view as "reasonable" or "necessary" when it comes to such people.

The ones that don't experience medical violence then, likely experience it as a teenager.
I didn't.
I am very rare in that I did not experience medical violence.
Why? Because I learned what intersexuality was as a young age, and I actively fought against what doctors wanted to do to me. All the way down to legal research on what medical care minors can be forced into. I remember walking into that doctor's appointment with the state law written down that proved that if I did not consent they could not do surgery.
That is why intersex activism is important. It saved me and it will save more.
how about this: when i was 9 and my stepdad beat me until i passed out and i told my friends at school, my teacher over heard and i was interviewed by cps. they also went to my house when i was at school. when i got home, my step father was waiting on the couch, and told me who visited him that day. he told me if i ever snitched again he would beat me to within an inch of my life.
how about this: my mother locked me out of the house when i was 14 and when i cried so loud the neighbors called the cops, the cop told me i should have been respectful of my mother who was trying to sleep.

Also, a lot of abused children donât realize that theyâre being abused or the extent of the abuse. Itâs their normal. Their minds are formed by their experiences and if all theyâve known is one existence it can be difficult to recognize that itâs wrong
It can be difficult to realize that âbetterâ even exists. This is part of why fiction can be life-saving. If you can read stories about happy families, loving families, sometimes you can hang on long enough to find or build a loving family for yourself.
