spencer   wastes   no   time   taking   a   long   drag   from   his   cigarette.   the   practiced   action,   the   hit   of   nicotine;   his   nerves   calm,   even   just   a   little   bit.   “   nope.   you   didn’t   either.   ”   it’s   not   a   question,   and   neither   is   the   way   he   reaches   into   arlo’s   pocket   to   retrieve   his   lighter.   the   proximity   makes   the   world   go   fuzzy   at   the   edges   –   or   maybe   that’s   the   pills   he   took   earlier   mixing   with   the   drink   he   just   downed.   “   surprised   you’re   even   here.   ”

─•───────        ▶︎       it's    reflexive,    the    way    he    catches    spencer's    wrist    as    it    leaves    his    pocket—    what's    new    is    the    utter    inaction    that    follows.    ❝    label    said    i    had    to.    heard    there    might've    been    some    cool    props,    too.    ❞    a    habitual    squeeze    of    his    fingers,    then    he    lets    his    arm    drop.    ❝    seems    more    like    everyone    i    know    is    crawling    out    to    haunt    me.    this    an    intervention    ?    ❞    a    joke,    made    in    poor    taste–    intervening    with    arlo    never    goes    well,    as    the    other    knows.

─•───────        ▶︎       sparks    ignite    beneath    his    skin    at    harsh    words    in    lieu    of    greeting.    a    fleeting    promise    of    conflict.    maybe    time    apart    hadn't    changed    that    much.    ❝    who    says    i    want    something    ?    ❞    he    muses,    though    the    grin    that    threatens    to    pull    across    his    lips    tells    another    story.    ❝    maybe    i    just    missed    you,    effie.    ❞

“   well   .   .   .   ”   a   long   drawl   ,   undoubtedly   a   gateaway   for   further   engagement   .   “   who   knows   ,   maybe   they   were   right   .   huuuh   “   spoken   like   a   gasp   with   widened   eyes   and   sheer   wonder   painted   on   her   face   .   ”   waitwaitwait   !   I   found   this   earlier   .   .   .   “   with   that   ,   evelyn   extracted   a   penny   from   her   pocket   .   ”   just   thought   of   it   as   good   fortune   coming   my   way   .   but   maybe   that   wasn't   meant   for   me   ,   all   along   .   super   karma   “   and   that's   how   arlo   ended   up   with   a   lucky   penny   tucked   into   the   palm   of   his   hand   . 

─•───────        ▶︎       there's    something    to    be    written    about    the    contagious    light    that    she    radiates,    surely.    the    longer    she    speaks,    the    larger    his    smile    grows.    he    folds    his    hand    around    the    penny,    pressing    it    too    his    heart    in    a    dramatized    fashion.    ❝    just    what    i    needed,    ❞    arlo    hums,    amused.    ❝    think    the    real    good    luck    charm    may    be    standing    right    in    front    of    me,    though.    ❞

she  sees  him.  he  sees  her.  they  make  eye  contact.  and  she's  turning  quickly  on  the  heel  of  her  foot.  it's  almost  theatrical,  how  she  approached  only  to  realize  who  it  was  --  and  immediately  begin  to  retreat.  he's  still  talking,  and  she  pauses  briefly  as  her  escape  is  shuffled  to  a  halt  by  waiters  passing  by  with  trays  of  empty  flutes  in  their  hands.  "doubtful."  she  shouldn't  have  said  it.  she  shouldn't  have  said  anything.  turn  around,  leave.  that  was  the  plan. ignore the ache, don't make direct eye contact. in fact, don't even look at him at all. even if she doesn't -- even if she went blind.. the heart still recognizes him. and she'd rather stomp out the ember, than let it burn her again.

─•───────        ▶︎       after    long    stretches    of    silence,    any    reply    feels    like    a    minuscule    win—    even    if    it’s    a    dig    at    his    expense.    he    trails    after    her,    pressing    on.    ❝    what    was    that    ?    speak    up.    ❞    an    argument    is    better    than    radio    silence.    ❝    afraid    you'll    be    seen    with    me    ?    ❞

the   all-too-familiar   voice   sends   a   shiver   of   dread,   a   pang   of   nostalgia   through   spencer’s   body.   goddammit.   of   course   he’s   out   here.   the   drink   that   was   in   his   hand   is   now   down   his   throat,   only   an   empty   cup   remaining.   “   too   dark.   wouldn’t   have   come   out   here   if   i   knew   you   were   here.   ”   he   winces   at   the   way   his   voice   warbles,   he   tries   to   play   off   the   way   he   fumbles   with   his   lighter.   “   too   late   for   that   now,   i   guess.   ”

─•───────        ▶︎       ❝    figures.    ❞    he    huffs,    pushing    off    of    the    wall    to    stand    in    front    of    spencer.    he    plucks    the    lighter    from    their    hands,    lights    the    cigarette    they’re    holding.    a    pause    as    the    light    illuminates    their    face,    a    hard    stare.    he    has    to    pry    himself    away,    pocketing    the    lighter    instead    of    handing    it    back.    ❝    didn’t    come    with    anyone    ?    ❞

─•───────        ▶︎       there’s    hardly    any    bait    that    arlo    wouldn’t    rise    to.    if    anything,    he    seems    to    perk    up    at    the    promise    of    conflict.    ❝    you    listen    to    your    manager?    weren’t    they    begging    you    to    stop    after    wife    number    three?    ❞    he    muses    aloud,    though    he’s    looking    at    the    liquid    swirling    in    his    cup.    the    verbal    punch    does    little    to    phase    him—    in    fact,    it    almost    feels    like    an    appraisal.    evidence    that    he’s    gotten    somewhere.    drink    tips    toward    mateos    with    a    shrug,    ❝    mad    ‘cos    you    can’t    play    the    part    anymore,    or    …    ?    don't    worry.    you've    still    got    the    whole…    face    going    for    you.    bet    they'd    hire    you    to    play    a    washed    up    rockstar.    ❞

─•───────        ▶︎       a    smile    breaks    out    across    his    features    as    noa    comes    into    view.    ❝    you    didn't    hear    it    ?    was    tryin'    to    send    out    a    telepathic    message    when    i    walked    in.    ❞    arm    drapes    around    her    shoulders,    momentarily    pulling    her    into    his    side    just    as    she    nudges    his    shoulder.    he    laughs,    ❝    you    look    good    too,    but    i    don't    have    to    tell    you    that.    steal    as    you    please.    ❞

─•───────        ▶︎       there's    a    grimace    as    he    realizes    the    person    he's    struck    a    conversation    with,    crossing    the    line    he'd    drawn    sometime    last    year.    arlo    bites    on    the    inside    of    his    cheek.    play    nice.    ❝    dunno.    might    take    the    nerds    fountain    over    the    karma    shit.    better    odds    for    us.    ❞

"OH COME ON NOW..." she says, words sweet though reflective of their hidden sourness. "It is an honour to be here supporting the...less fortunate." attention shifts, and she'll look down to her nails studying the slight imperfection at her middle finger. "Keep listening to your manager love."
