i was in the physics lab today and we were working with lasers, so the Lab Freaks (legal name) were being very careful to stress that we Do Not Turn Around or Look Behind Us because weβll get extremely blinded by the power of high strength lasers
and iβm not gonna lie it was actually extremely hard to resist turning around. i misjudged orpheus it turns out this isnt extremely easy actually

Bad news about the divine
I installed a program via tarball today. nature is healing
my thanks to whoever decided the archive files for installing programs the hard way on linux (as opposed to installing a flatpak, an appimage, via .deb files, via package repository, or any of the other conveniences people have invented) should be called tarballs, because, obviously, all things are improved by making them round. but it also evokes the sensation of rolling all of your files up, katamari-style, for wider distribution. it also evokes the sensation of having to dig through a sticky, greasy mass on the receiving end, which is not inaccurate to the experience of figuring out how the hell these things work
anyway, as much as I'm bitching about The Hard Way being Hard, there's still a reason I'm doing this. the main reason is that the linux distribution (aka an operating system built on top of the core linux code) I'm using is linux mint, which by design is built using older versions of ubuntu (another linux distribution) as its base. this means that mint is very stable - those older versions, called LTS or "long-term support" version, have the benefit of being time-tested and continually fixed if any issues are found, whereas newer versions have shiny new features but are less time-tested and more prone to surprise breakage. however, this means that the programs you can install via mint's official package repositories (basically sites containing prebuilt software that should play nice with your linux distribution) will often also be older versions of themselves. if you know what you're doing, you can install software through routes other than the official repositories (this is not only allowed but extremely normalized), which is why I was screwing with tarballs - I wanted the most recent version of geany that had support for more programming languages.
but the other reason is that I just genuinely like figuring this stuff out! doing things the hard, hands-on way often leads to me learning things I wouldn't have otherwise learned by doing them the easy way. I spent a lot of time feeling stupid and frustrated but once I figured it out the payoff was so worth it. it's like solving a hard puzzle in a video game and getting an old car to work at the same time. and I got to open up the repository where all the software packages live and find the places where mint keeps its thinking for specific programs. it was neat!
it's part of why I'm so unhappy with "vibe coding" and all the other things genAI has done to the software field and to tech literacy. obviously there are bigger reasons (labor, environment, etc) but I feel like the corporations pushing genAI are taking understanding away from people. as much as I joke about them being demonic math boxes, computers follow logic and they can be understood. obviously I don't think everyone should be hardcore code freaks running arch linux and installing from tarballs, and obviously we should strive to make tech more accessible, but genAI isn't it. we need to make the understanding and the processes more accessible instead of selling the idea that computers are wish-granting genies
a non-exhaustive list of examples of non-genAI ways linux has become more accessible over time:
the creation of distributions like linux mint, which are designed to be newbie-friendlier: they run more stable versions of software, come packaged with common applications like internet browsers and office software, are graphically set up to resemble windows, and so forth.
some parts of the linux community becoming much less elitist and much more accommodating of non-technical newcomers (emphasis on "some" - there's still a bunch of elitist assholes but communities for newbie distros like mint tend to be very helpful)
the introduction of package repositories, flatpaks, and other tech that simplifies the installation process for new software, as well as package managers and other tech that makes it easier to manage and debug installations (ex. by showing you which packages need which other packages in your system)
people making graphical interfaces for command-line-based programs so that you don't have to memorize and precisely type a bunch of commands to do things
the creation of software like wine and proton, which "translate" windows programs so that they can run on linux (this is why so many steam games are playable on linux now! this is how the steam deck works! it runs linux with proton as its translation layer!)
and yes, with some of these advancements, a certain amount of understanding gets abstracted away for convenience - you don't need to understand how proton translates windows programs for linux in order to play games, it's something that Just Works 95% of the time. but you still have to follow a series of specific, traceable steps to get things to work, with more tightly coupled cause-and-effect, with room for you to tinker, instead of making requests of highly variable specificity to the genie until it gives you what you want
eh, as much as i enjoy learning things (and The Thing for me recently is learning to make neocities site) the last part kinds hurts
it hurts because i wish it was this easy. i had few attempts at linux but the issue is that i only have one pc. and that i use it for everything when that's possible. so following any specific steps that are new to me is not really a thing that is within my capabilities in such scenario.
and i imagine it may be the same for other persons even if for different reasons. my PC can't handle a virtual machine so i hope with some time it's gonna be even easier to get started.

on the topic of disabled characters, though, i think a LOT of artists give characters mobility aids that their character wouldn't actually benefit from using.
i'm sort of having a mild brain fog moment rn so i can't fully articulate what i'm on about, but i think a lot of able-bodied artists view things like canes and crutches as interchangeable. and they often don't know enough about the wide range of mobility aids to make an informed decision about what their character might actually use based on their disability
i also think that aids like walkers and rollators are sort of viewed as "cringe" on some level, and many people view them to be "just for old people," so many artists will opt for giving a character who has full-body pain and fatigue a cane (which, in many cases, can potentially WORSEN full-body pain) instead. and a lot of people don't realize that most wheelchair users are able to walk, so they don't consider it an option for characters with chronic pain
idk it's kind of frustrating. i've genuinely never, ever seen a character that uses a rollator before. not once. i cannot name a single one. i know of multiple ocs who are described to have full-body pain, dizziness, and fatigue that are drawn as cane users and are never shown with wheelchairs or walkers, though
it's also sort of sad? i've been diagnosed since i was twelve years old, and i only heard of rollators LAST YEAR. and that was only because i saw one irl and immediately asked what it was. i wonder how many disabled people out there don't even know it's an option solely because they're completely underrepresented online and in media
if you're a creative with a disabled oc, PLEASEEE check out this link. it's a very nice and detailed guide for telling which mobility aids suit someone's needs best. it's incredibly important to make the right choice for your character! mobility aids tell you a LOT about someone's lived experience. picking the right one will communicate to your audience #1 what your character goes through #2 that you UNDERSTAND what your character goes through!
yeah and it's absolutely fucked that there's never any representation of persons using different mobility aids at different times. it's the most pronounced with wheelchairs i think (i have only learned last year that many people using them can actually walk which kinda made me angry at society bc why is that i've never heard about it in any way shape or form)
but like. i've never seen it anywhere, ever. a character who (like myself) sometimes uses a cane and walks carefully, and sometimes walks fast with it. and then sometimes switches to crutches and sometimes is barely able to walk even with them due to pain. or uses mobility aids outside while opting to not use them at home or use them differently at home. and sometimes can walk without them outside. or uses cane only for going down/up stairs.
bc other ppl have not seen it either. they don't realize that this is an option based on genuine needs and comfort. and even with those mobility aids i use (which are for way less severe issues), people just act like i'm making shit up. like it's just a play, a joke. a way to gain attention or pity. i don't want to be seen this way. i don't want anybody to be seen this way.
i'd rather have some character show persons why such interchangable use of mobility aids may be the case for one. and preferably on the example of wheelchair / rollator / walker bc i imagine those are treated badly.
i hope one day society will consider us all as normal. and believe our experiences and needs and pain. i kinda know it's not gonna happen but it's a nice dream.

There are more people who are able to change weight (without any surgical intervention) than any of those other traits, it is more plastic than them, itβs more like mental health. Hard to change, you probably have some things that will never go away, but it is possible and good to get better
Of course in both cases the medical establishment and the overwhelming amount of quackery which upholds or rejects the establishment as a form of authenticity, will not help people, but the basic yet incredibly hard to follow through on rules that people know about probably will

The thing is, even criticizing those aspects outside a larger criticism of capitalism and its general influence on the environment misses the point in my opinion. AI isn't uniquely destroying the environment, or people's quality of life - all of the dangerous tendencies that the AI boom has been escalating and accommodating in concerning ways existed before AI and exist in a much larger societal context than the one surrounding AI. I agree that the way AI has escalated many of these problems is really worrying and dangerous and I'm not saying you're wrong to point that out, but simply removing AI from the picture wouldn't fundamentally resolve the destructive powers of capitalism.
first things first: agreed on most of the fronts. altho accelerating global warming is extremely concerning for me here honestly because Earth is already warming up faster than ever since it was habitable for any forms of life.
but our observations are...
it was an issue before the boom of the LLMs (chatgpt and others) but it increased heavily since persons started relying on LLMs so much. people are not getting more stupid, and being more stupid ain't a bad thing either (i hate this whole rethoric so fucking much). but they trust themselves less.
they'd rather rely on the goddamn chatbot than believe that they know what to do, that they remember things right, that their logic is not flawed. their thinking works fine, they just don't believe it does and act accordingly.
and LLMs are often wrong. very often. (and sometimes with severe consequences.) and those who control LLMs can make them give wrong answers on purpose if they wish, and censor whatever they want.
given the state of current politics around the globe... i just think it's extremely dangerous that people would rather believe a program that is owned by the rich instead of looking for the information themselves, doing things themselves to learn how to do them, trying to think for themselves. it's not about their capabilities to think, it's about who they trust.
it's silly that people put all the emphasis on believing fake information that chats give them and referring many tasks to them instead of very real dangers that regular users put themselves in.
i hate seeing people now making fun of those who care about privacy online. i've seen people saying things like "well they already have your data. what are companies going to do with it" and it's like, that's not the point. it's that companies /shouldn't/ be able to have my data and sell it. am i aware they probably already have my data? yes, absolutely. but i'm still going to try and keep them from monetizing it any further, why are we defending companies selling data they shouldn't have to begin with though?
