Something that I think the movie really misses out on is that Patrick Bateman IS a bigot. Sure, he makes his little ACLU speech around his white friends, but he’s racist to the Chinese laundry lady, and they took out a lot of his explicit racism from the book. Like, in the book, when he kills Al the homeless guy, he calls him the n-word. And, later, he has a psychotic break in a bagel shop and starts spouting antisemitic slurs, in direct contradiction to his earlier condemnation of antisemitism. That is the point. Bateman (and the people like him) can dish out liberal platitudes, but he is an embodiment of meaningless Western capitalist destruction. That’s, like, the whole point of the book. I understand why you don’t want to make Christian Bale say slurs, but you do realize you’ve kind of stripped the work of its themes. Which I guess makes sense when a movie of this scale is inherently a product of a capitalist system, but like. The Book Is Better.
