explaining Nona-era Griddlehark is like. Yeah they haven’t made out yet, on account of Gideon being dead and stuck behind Harrow’s brain for nine months and Harrow astral projecting for six consecutive months after that. Well except for that one time when Harrow’s body kissed Gideon on the mouth, but that doesn’t really count because her body (not to be confused with The Body) was being possessed by a six month old amnesiac version of The Body (that is, the Girl in the Tomb but not the girl currently in the tomb, who is Harrow), who as you may remember is the third corner of the core Harrow love quadrangle. Except that’s kind of a simplification because it’s implied that the amnesiac soul in Harrow’s body is at least a little bit part-Harrow and part-Gideon. And she only kissed Gideon because she thought Gideon looked sad, she actually thinks redheads are very unattractive.

“Camilla was loved by Nona”
Does this imply that Pyrrha was present at Gideon’s birth?! I always figured that they arrived shortly after but…!?

Nona moments that made me cry… she deserves the entire world.
Some Camilla-moments I found on my Nona-reread that made me want to eat glass…
Just finished a htn reread and I’m going absolutely insane about this scene. Is Wake reacting this way to Pyrrha or G1deon? Does it matter to her? Does she love them/him/her?? I had always assumed that their affair was mostly physical (at least from Wake’s perspective) but this is such a deeply emotional, human reaction coming from a woman who has up to this point displayed nothing but hatred.
The two other interactions we have between G1deon/Pyrrha and Wake-inside-Cyths-corpse are when harrow catches them kissing and when Wake tries to barbecue G1deon/Pyrrha in the incinerator. Does Wake love them?? Does she hate them?? Who does she think she’s seeing, G1deon or Pyrrha??
Also, in the above scene Pyrrha shoots her on sight. Did they make some kind of plan together that Pyrrha doesn’t want Wake to reveal? Are there any other secrets? I do believe that Pyrrha loved her so why the cold-blooded headshot?
I seriously would kill for like a short story about the whole Pyrrha/Wake/G1deon affair, I have so many questions! And I’d love to hear y’all’s takes on this!!
In no particular order...
I think Wake knew both Pyrrha and G1deon well enough to know Pyrrha was the one who walked in at the end.
I think their emotions were very mixed up, but Wake was closer to Pyrrha than G1deon. Here are some bits from the "notes" Harrow finds:
HIM I’LL KILL QUICK BECAUSE SHE ASKED ME TO AND BECAUSE THAT MUCH HE HONESTLY DESERVES [...]
I WILL REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME YOU KISSED ME—YOU APOLOGISED—YOU SAID, I AM SORRY, DESTROY ME AS I AM, BUT I WANT TO KISS YOU BEFORE I AM KILLED, AND I SAID TO YOU WHY, AND YOU SAID, BECAUSE I HAVE ONLY ONCE MET SOMEONE SO UTTERLY WILLING TO BURN FOR WHAT THEY BELIEVED IN, AND I LOVED HIM ON SIGHT, AND THE FIRST TIME I DIED I ASKED OF HIM WHAT I NOW ASK OF YOU I KISSED YOU AND LATER I WOULD KISS HIM TOO BEFORE I UNDERSTOOD WHAT YOU WERE, AND ALL THREE OF US LIVED TO REGRET IT—BUT WHEN I AM IN HEAVEN I WILL REMEMBER YOUR MOUTH, AND WHEN YOU ROAST DOWN IN HELL I THINK YOU WILL REMEMBER MINE
In the above context, I don't think Phyrra and Wake planned ahead of time for Phyrra to shoot Wake. I think Phyrra did it out of affection, because she knew it's what Wake would want, and I think Wake knew she'd do it.
G1deon probably wouldn't have defied Jod for Wake, but I think Wake knew Phyrra would. I think that's why she had such relief seeing Phyrra "come back for her".
Absolutely agree with all this! I think she shot her to free her from the interrogation and ensure she was under no more threat of being any use to John. (There is... also a theory I've seen around that Wake's revenant may now have clung to Pyrrha's gun, and while I remain a little bit skeptic that neither Augustine nor John would notice that kind of thing, we aren't really sure how perceiving unbound spirits works in detail, and there was emphasis on how the murder weapon would have a strong thanergetic link... 👀 It's not a theory I deeply expect, but I can definitely see it!)
Another factor that's SO important when looking at Wake is that the most we ever see of her comes through those notes (manifested probably subconsciously by her angry revenant), during the River battle (where obviously she's fighting her enemies), and the interrogation scene, and in the last one, she's talking to John. She's pure vitriol and trying to sound as obstinate and seething as possible because she's talking to John, and later Augustine and Mercy. Emphasizing how she didn't give a shit about that baby and called it Bomb is for them, she wants them to be horrified, she wants them to be upset. She doesn't know Gideon is eavesdropping, and it probably wouldn't make a difference if she did, because the mission (almost) always came first, but we don't know if she might have felt differently under all that.
And I mean, I absolutely don't think she felt an ounce of affection for that fetus, and whether there was any guilt at all or just bitterness at having to do it like this is a very open question, but revenants do have the ability to be aware of the world around them. Pal didn't because he was splitting his consciousness a million different ways, that's why he asked Harrow which part Cam had so he knew where to focus. Doctor Sex was able to crawl to his lab and get his last project into a state for someone else to easily finish.
Wake definitely had enough awareness to physically burn Harrow whenever Harrow touched the sword—except when Harrow uses it to fight Cyth, who Wake hated more. So she probably did see Gideon grow up, to some extent! Saw her grow up fully entrenched in this system from birth and still recognize how shitty it was, watched her fight such a powerful necromancer with her bare hands and defy her at every turn. I wonder, in fact, exactly when she jumped from her bones to the sword, and if there was any in-between step. The only reason she would have had a link to that sword would be through Gideon. So... Could it have been that day, when Gideon and Harrow fought each other bloody specifically right in front of her niche? The fact that it was there, that the catalyst was Harrow catching Gideon telling her mother "I love you"... It very well could be.
And then, there's the one single time Wake ever sees Gideon with both having bodies, Harrow's face to Cytherea's face. Wake sees the body of the Lyctor she's been haunting, sees her daughter's eyes in that face, lowers the gun, and simply says, "Goodbye." Terse, cold... but... also not nothing. She could have said nothing. She could have just turned and trudged away. But she offers that one thing. "Goodbye." In context it feels... Not quite an apology, but maybe something that used to live down the street from one. You know what I mean?
And yeah, I absolutely believe she loved Pyrrha.
Maybe didn't love G1deon, not the same way, maybe not romantically at all, but she at least respected him. "He honestly deserves" a swift and painless death. I do also think their relationship was primarily physical, specifically because "that man is legendarily unamorous" with the "closest thing to interest" he'd ever shown in anyone being Pyrrha and Wake. We know he and Wake were fucking and that it at least started before he ever knew Pyrrha was why he sometimes blacked out; we don't know if he ever finally learned about it through that affair, he may or may not have. But he does feel intensely aromantic and romance-averse to me, leave him ooouuut of everyone's relationship drama thanks, so an enemy/frienemy with benefits might have been kind of an ideal situation lol.
But with Pyrrha it had gone on longer. With Pyrrha she got totally blindsided by this Lyctor suddenly kissing her presumably on a battlefield and going "you can just straight up kill me for this but your conviction is the hottest thing I've seen in all these 10,000 years" and. You know maybe Wake was strategically minded enough to think "wait, I can use this," but she also very well may have gone ",,, unfortunately this is also incredibly hot, fuck", or both. Honestly my money would be on both. And then... Well. G1deon's affair with her lasted around two years, and Pyrrha's had been going on longer. We don't know how much longer. Could have been a few months, or could have been many more years. Either way, especially from Wake's perspective, it was A While. And she kept coming back.
And of course, there are her final moments...
END OF THE LINE. FALLING. OXYGEN CAN’T LAST THE DISTANCE AND WON’T REDIRECT POWER FROM THE PAYLOAD. INSTEAD I WILL MAKE YOU WATCH EVERY MOMENT AS I GET THE LAST PRIVILEGE YOU CANNOT ENJOY YOU BYGONE SON OF A BITCH. I HOPE YOU’RE BOTH AS SORRY AS I AM.
It's not betrayal if you didn't trust or care about the other person. When an enemy hurts you, you're upset that you're being hurt, but you expect it from them. When someone you love hurts you, you're upset that it's them hurting you. It hurts so much worse from someone you love...
I was initially quite skeptical about Wake watching Gideon grow up from inside the sword, since it feels like the sort of warm and fuzzy theory that projects what we wish Gideon and Wake could have had instead of what they actually got. It also dances close to "all women are naturally maternal and will love their biological children if they just get to know them!", which...ew.
But then you brought up Wake saying goodbye, and damn it, you're right.
I initially assumed Wake might be directing the comment at Harrow, out of general respect for Harrow kicking her out and perhaps some belated gratitude for carrying the sword around. But Wake knows how Necromancer/Cavalier switches work. She's seen G1deon and Phyrra do it several times. She knows what Harrow's eyes look like, and more importantly she knows what Gideon's eyes looked like.
She knew she was talking to her daughter.
Oh yeah no, absolutely not. I don't think Wake EVER had any kind of warm fuzzy maternal bonding whatever.
But I do think she would've seen the kid she KNOWS is a biological weapon carrying that bastard's "divine" blood kicking and screaming against this system and fist fighting a House heir and think, damn right! Get her ass! That she would've seen Gideon trying to run away 87 times and hoped desperately for her success, and not just so she'd take Wake with her (but like that too). Been glad for her resolve to keep trying over and over no matter how many failures. I'm sure she also dreaded the possibility of Gideon falling right into line for the Cohort, and probably didn't have that much faith she'd make the right choice, but enough to at least hope she would.
Wake was proud as hell of her 9-year-old niece with her submachine gun, so I can definitely see her looking at her spitting image winding up... not immune to propaganda, but honestly remarkably resistant for someone who's literally never known anything but the darkest cultiest hole in the universe, and... probably not "loving" her; they never had any actual relationship, and she'd probably always see Gideon as a weapon and a hope for taking down the empire first and foremost. But I do think on some level, she'd be proud of her, and damn if that's not more than most people have ever given Gideon.
And then Gideon's only memory of her is a "goodbye" she didn't even know was her until after the fact, and hearing her spit venom about how she never gave a single fuck about that baby. 😔 And whether it ever changed or not, it was true when it happened. Whose baby it was never mattered as long as it had John's blood. It was just a Bomb.
Very true and this makes my heart break for Gideon who only ever wanted parental affection (or just literally any affection), which we can see in the way she reacts to aiglamene‘s tiniest bits of approval and magnus‘ basic human decency…
And the thing is, Wake may not have had any maternal feelings towards Gideon, but Pyrrha did!! She thought the baby was hers/G1deon’s at first and I think if she could, Pyrrha would have saved the child and loved her… we see her putting personal affection over duty/missions with Nona and Camilla/Palamedes, we see her enjoy domestic family life and parenting Nona…
Gideon was hoping for affection from the wrong mother.

Do not waste your tears over fascists. "He was somebody's this, he was somebody's that". Michael Brown was someone's son, and so was Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Emmett Till. Sandra Bland was someone's daughter, and so was Breonna Taylor, while she slept. Sonya Massey, too, was someone's baby girl. Latasha Harlins was someone's baby. Martin Luther King Jr was somebody's son, husband and father, and yet the FBI killed him. Fred Hampton, Malcolm X, Patrice Lumumba. Hind Rajab, someone's baby. Khaled Nabhan, and his granddaughter, soul of his soul. Refaat Alareer. And on and on and on, every martyr, every Black and Palestinian person whose been told over and over again how cheap our blood is, how NOTHING our life is. I do not weep over the death of white supremacist, I fucking cheer. One less of them means a Black or brown child can live another day.
