Noel: And I’ve written songs about Richard Ashcroft, ’cause that man is a genius.

Steve: Talking about people inspiring you - do you find that you inspire each other, you spark off?

Liam: Well Noel inspires me, I don’t know if I inspire him.

Noel: Yes he does. He knows that he does.

Liam: Oh cheers. Gee thanks.

Noel: He knows that he does.

Steve: Has your relationship changed over the last year?

Noel: Yeah, course it has. Yeah.

Steve: In what way?

Liam: We see a lot of each other every now and again, which is nice.

Noel: He’s got more paranoid. He thinks that the world’s against him.

Liam: Yeah yeah and he’s full of shit ’cause I don’t think that at all.

Noel: Yes he does.

Liam: Take that back. Take that back and don’t start…

Noel: He knows he’s a genius but he won’t admit it.

Liam: I will admit it. I’m a fuckin’ genius! I’ll be telling everyone forever.

Noel: No you’re not. [Laughs]

Liam: He inspires me more than I inspire him.

Steve: In what way, though?

Liam: Well, me mam inspires me, me wife inspires me, my little step-son inspires me. Bottles of lager inspire me.

Noel: Yeah well that goes without saying though doesn’t it.

Liam: Well it’s something that you love and someone that listens to you. Like… you inspire me, Steve, by taking the time to listen to me.

Steve: But is it just the mood of the people around you that gets you up?

Liam: No, it’s just people that can be arsed and that have a brain inside them and clean their teeth in the morning.

oasis stand a world apart from their britpop contemporaries; in a sea of realism and cynicism, their intrinsic optimism, hope, and (dare i say) naive wonder at the potentials of the universe that set them apart

the cultural malaise and the pressures of the enroaching millenium, the visceral and intrusive realities of everday life - cockroaches and woodchip on the walls, the centuries anxiety - none of these are oasis’ concern, and why should they be? others rent a flat above a shop, cut their hair and get a job; to oasis it isnt worth the aggravation when theres nothing worth working for. far better to lie in bed and dream of the better days that are coming - and they are coming - than to run yourself into the ground with worry and stress while you wait for them. oasis dont want to paint life as it is, but life as they know it can be (there are brighter sides to life and i should know because ive seen them)

there’s certainly an underlying melancholy to their work (noel can make a christmas song sound poignant and sad) but it serves as an acknowledgement, rather than an acceptance, a needed balance which prevents their relentless optimism from sounding fake or forced
