But where you go D=
I let the queue run out and just kind of left it! kept meaning to come back though! like raffles, I let you all think i was dead, and like Raffles i was secretly just being a dick
ok so i just accidentally came out of self-imposed exile whoops maybe i'll finally answer the questions in the inbox
how many people are in the Raffles fandom now do we need to start plotting some kind of crime-and-cricket-con for the Ides of March 2014
pretty sure we could do this i mean my sister once had a skype sleepover I donāt think this is that much moreā¦
āMillions of things!ā she exclaimed.: ankh-the-odd: sixohsixoheightfourtwo: how many people are in theā¦
Can I come
NO
jk jk
ok but seriously folks: i'm assuming everyone who has liked or commented on this post is coming and I look forward to getting a lot of weird looks from normal tourists
and, fortuitously, the Ides of March next year - March 15th - is a SATURDAY making this all I hope a bit more feasible

0. The Amateur Cracksman (Pilot) Raffles and Bunny travel to a country estate with a plan to steal a priceless necklace. They soon learn that two other thieves are also there.
1. The First Step Raffles is visited by his old school chum, Bunny Manders, who has fallen on hard times. Penniless himself, Raffles comes up with a scheme.
2. A Costume Piece Brash and crude, Reuben Rosenthall is a real "rough diamond" -- a self-made millionaire who wears his wealth in the most ostentatious way possible.
3. The Spoils of Sacrilege Bunny feels he needs to do more to justify his share of their ill-gotten gains, so the brothers in crime plan a job in which he takes the lead.
4. The Gold Cup Raffles and Bunny swipe the famous Royal Gold Cup from the British Museum, but criminologists track them down, suspecting Raffles of the theft.
5. The Chest of Silver After depositing his precious (and stolen) silverware in a bank vault, Raffles departs for Scotland sans Bunny. Inspector Mackenzie sees his chance.
6. The Last Laugh A display of jewelry at the Italian embassy proves too great a temptation for Raffles and Bunny ... and so does the chance to rescue a young maid.
7. A Trap to Catch a Cracksman Raffles relies on cunning rather than strength to take on an American boxer. The champion brags he can catch anyone who tries to steal his trophies.
8. To Catch a Thief London's other thief has Raffles worried -- the city isn't big enough for both of them. Raffles and Bunny track the man down to steal his booty.
9. A Bad Night Plans to rob a Dutch millionaire's home hit a snag when Raffles has to play cricket for England. Bunny sets to do the job himself.
10. Mr. Justice Raffles When one of his cricket friends runs afoul of a ruthless moneylender, Raffles decides to pay the man's bill ... and then some.
11. Home Affairs Raffles takes it personally when the secretary for Home Affairs threatens draconian new measures for offenses against property.
12. The Gift of the Emperor The government asks Raffles to steal a priceless black pearl belonging to the German kaiser - aided by none other than Mackenzie of the Yard.
13. An Old Flame While burgling, Raffles gets caught by a former lover trapped in a loveless marriage. The woman seems ready to start a new life with her old flame.
and ONCE AGAIN I am reduced to a series of punctuation marks: !!!!!Ā
anyone reading this: probably you don't need me to tell you again how good this series is but IT'S JUST REALLY GREAT and you should go freaking FORTH and put it in front of your eyes if you haven't done so already.
"All but this,ā said Raffles, thrusting his fist into my lap. āI would have shown it you before, but really, old fellow, your face all day has been worth a fortune to the firm!ā And he opened his fist, to shut it next instant on the bunch of diamonds and of sapphires that I had last seen encircling the neck of Lady Melrose.ā
(from āGentlemen & Playersā by E.W. Hornung)
"Let me just casually thrust my hand at your lap and fiddle with jewels" nothing suggestive about that at all!
I'D LIKE TO APOLOGISE TO YOU ALL
I TOTALLY MISSED THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A 'FAMILY JEWELS' JOKE
"You're quite right, Bunny. I won't. I really won't. Yetāyou saw old Lady Melrose's necklace? I've been wanting it for years! But I'm not going to play the fool; honor bright, I'm not; yetāby Jove!āto get to windward of the professors and Mackenzie too! It would be a great game, Bunny, it would be a great game!" "Well, you mustn't play it this week." "No, no, I won't. But I wonder how the professors think of going to work? That's what one wants to know. I wonder if they've really got an accomplice in the house? How I wish I knew their game! But it's all right, Bunny; don't you be jealous; it shall be as you wish."
(whoa, this one was meant to happen ages ago, somehow got out of sync)
in which Raffles lies through his teeth.
and note how he sneaks in 'don't you be jealous'. JEALOUS OF WHAT.
(from 'Gentlemen & Players' by E.W. Hornung)
And yet you allowed the professors, as you call them, to take her jewels, case and all!" "All but this," said Raffles, thrusting his fist into my lap. "I would have shown it you before, but really, old fellow, your face all day has been worth a fortune to the firm!" And he opened his fist, to shut it next instant on the bunch of diamonds and of sapphires that I had last seen encircling the neck of Lady Melrose.
thrusting his fist into my lap
thrusting
his fist
into my lap.
and admiring Bunny's face. OKAY. Okay. I'm calm about thisĀ
THRUSTING HIS FIST INTO MY LAP
(from 'Gentlemen & Players' by E.W. Hornung)
"Well, Bunny," said Raffles, "so the professors have it, eh?" "Yes," said I. "And I'm jolly glad!" "That poor Mackenzie has a ball in his chest?" "That you and I have been on the decent side for once." He shrugged his shoulders. "You're hopeless, Bunny, quite hopeless! I take it you wouldn't have refused your share if the boodle had fallen to us? Yet you positively enjoy coming off second bestāfor the second time running!

...most of us were on our way to catch the early train; between us we filled a compartment almost to suffocation. And still we talked all together of the night's event; and still I was a little hero in my way... and my gratification was subtle and intense. Raffles watched me under lowered lids. Not a word had we had together; not a word did we have until we had left the others at Paddington, and were skimming through the streets in a hansom with noiseless tires and a tinkling bell.
Raffles: enjoying Bunny's happy face too much to come clean about what really happened, yes or yes
(from 'Gentlemen & Players' by E.W. Hornung)
Um, yeah, GO THERE.Ā
basically. YEP. in case you haven't been on it: that site is AMAZING - it's gotĀ the best resourceĀ for looking atĀ allĀ the actors who've played Raffles - stage, screen, everything (though it doesn't seem to include Jeremy Clyde from the radio series). I got my Ronald Colman userpic from this site! incidentally, Ronald Colman: out of all human beings, probably the who looks the most Rafflesy y/y (apart from the moustache - despite the 1930s insisting that Raffles had a moustache E.W.H. seems pretty clear that he didn't)
check him OUT
(if you want to see him in something else,Ā Random HarvestĀ is great) (well this has got slightly more Colman-focused than I anticipated)
whoa! hello new followers
It's pretty clear what this blog is about, I think, but just in case, I have prepared this highly sophisticated diagram (using one of Cyrus Cuneo's illustrations forĀ A Thief In The Night):
Raffles was the first to express surprise; but he had also been the first to raise the wounded man. Nor had any of them a stronger or more tender hand in the slow procession to the house.
part 900000 of ? in a series I like to call "Is This Adjective Really Necessary?" So Raffles is 'STRONG' and 'TENDER'; is this really necessary when we're talking about the application of first aid. (well, maybe. but STILL) (and actually this is a literary device; Raffles is much less surprised than he lets on, and his very obvious helpfulness is meant to be a clue) (BUT STILL)
(from 'Gentlemen & Players' by E.W. Hornung)
!!!!!
the full text of Graham Greeneās 1975 play āThe Return of A.J. Rafflesā is now available for perusal on Google Docs for the 3 people that care! click the image above to read!Ā there are probably some typoes, let me know if you see one and Iāll fix it [unless itās a Mackenzie line because his keysmashes are canon]
this is the one where raffles/bunny are a canon couple and they meet Wilde and Bosie by the way, i would have uploaded it sooner had i not had to snap my fingers in a āzā formation at the best lines
also be sure to check out the radio version of the play Ā Ā»here« (if youāre a Rafflesian you should be and probably are following that blog anyway because itās impossibly perfect)
enjoyyy

He was followed by nearly all the cricketers, who now burst upon the scene in a body, only to desert it for the chase. Raffles was one of them, and I would gladly have been another, had not the footman chosen this moment to hurl me from him.
translation: "I would gladly have HURLED MYSELF ON TOP OF RAFFLES if someone hadn't physically prevented me from doing so."
(from 'Gentlemen & Players' by E.W. Hornung)

Grr I'll just have to keep waiting for the others though :( Thanks so much for the help, it was very kind of you :) and I'll go check out those other adaptations! p.s. your picture on the left of your blog homepage there <---- is HILARIOUS I LAUGHED REALLY HARD actually your whole blog is, seriously I laugh like crazy whenever I come here!
