Big Media’s lobbyists have been running a smear campaign trying to paint the Internet Archive as a greedy big tech operation bent on stealing books—which is totally absurd. If you’ve ever used the WayBack Machine, listened to their wonderful archives of live music, or checked out one of their 37 million texts, it’s time to speak up. On March 20, everyone is showing their support for the Internet Archive during oral arguments.
Here's how you can help:
Don’t let libraries die. As the future goes digital, major publishers are suing to cut off libraries’ defense of digital books from censorsh
The Internet Archive is our library, a massive collection of knowledge and culture accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Don't let greedy publishers burn down the next Library of Alexandria!
And if you're absolutely certain you don't use or need the Internet Archive, take a look at their projects first, you might be surprised. Those are all at risk too.

Soooooo… I’m updating Vaygan haha. Decided to go full Rabbitfolk/Harengon with him. He was looking too much like Viera - and I was struggling how to make him a pretty boy anthro. But we’re getting there!

I got dart frogs last year, specifically Dendrobates auratus! So here’s a quick pic of “The Mini Bar”. They’re names are Mint, Julep, Jack (not pictured), and Coke.

i hate that every time i look for color studies and tips to improve my art and make it more dynamic and interesting all that comes up are rudimentary explanations of the color wheel that explain it to me like im in 1st grade and just now discovering my primary colors
“red and green are opposites 🥰” cool now how do i paint a tree with pinks and blues without it looking like a child’s finger painting or incongruous blobs of rainbow vomit
ok i can’t explain it very well but im looking for tips and techniques for rendering art like
with specifically the highlights and colors being hues that compliment each other, don’t distract from the scene, and make it more interesting/visually appealing
is it too much to ask
gonna drop some sources I have saved on Pinterest! I don't know if these all link back to the original sources so apologies for that
cohesive but still contrasting
This kind of talks about color and composition
This is a bit about landscape specifically
Values & composition
Contrast in composition
Balance in colors & values
This one's more for palette building but I think it's useful and can be applied to the other ones
Cohesion within compositions/lighting
"Chromatic fringe" - I also see people using this with shading, they bring in a transition color that is a different hue than the base color or shadow, it makes it so that less vibrancy is lost and it doesn't get muddy!
This one specifically has a lot of process behind the style of painting you're looking for!
Also one of my favorite artists who makes bright and colorful art like this is Not Sorry Art on TikTok & YouTube, her website is here and it's<3 my fav. She has some videos where you can see her process
With the oranges painting you put as an example, I noticed they painted the lighter values more toward yellow - they also exaggerated the hues of the undertones of the photo, so I'm guessing they either did it in their head or bumped the saturation up to get a closer look! I really love these paintings you shared and I definitely share your desire to paint/draw like that :)
thanks this is super helpful! /gen
If you'd like 2 Print books that I absolutely reccomend to every visual artist regardless of Media, Color and Light and Imaginative Realism by James Gurney are basically religious texts for artists, even the 3-D people because his understanding and explanation of how light and form work is that damn good.
If you're wondering about Mr. Gurney's chops:
James Gurney is the Dinotopia Guy (that link includes his Dinotopia books, prints and online classes too)
"Walkable city" is not "City where to have to walk everywhere."
"Walkable city" is.
Sidewalks big enough to fit you, your stroller, your wheelchair, your guide dog, or anything else you need when you're getting from one place to another.
Safe crosswalks frequent enough so you don't need to walk in traffic.
Bike lanes to keep bikes out of foot traffic and car traffic.
Accessible and affordable public transit.
Cities where the essentials are close enough you can travel on foot (or in wheelchair)
Cities where it's reasonable to be able to get from point a to point b without requiring you, yourself, to drive
People get so caught up in the "Walkable" part of the term and like to spout "Walkable cities are abelist because not everyone can walk".
Bitch. The modern city structure is abelist because not everyone can drive. And classist because not everyone can afford a car and it's pretty damn impossible to get a job if you don't have a car.
Walkable cities are cities where people can reasonably get from pointA to pointB without requiring a motor vehicle.
"But fae. Disabled people have issues using the paths in modern cities." Bitch abled people can barely use the paths in modern cities. That's kind of the fucking problem.
Also walkable cities have fucking benches. Not only for disabled people. But sometimes you just twist your ankle and need to sit for a moment.
"Put fae. If you have benches, homeless people will sleep on them."
Then get fucking housing for the homeless. Problem solved. They'll sleep in their nice warm homes instead of on the benches.
-fae
Additional things I’d like for the Walkable Cities:
-Water-Fountains. Just, free, public water-fountains. Maybe also get the kind that has the “for dogs” lower spigot/bowl thing? But definitely water-fountains.
-Public Parks (at least those that reach a certain size) should have Public Restrooms. Again, this just makes life better for everyone.
-Public Restrooms and baby changing stations.
people are already forgetting ALL THIS USED TO BE COMMON EVERYWHERE
I'm actually super annoyed about this Netflix situation. They haven't done anything in years to garner any loyalty, and now they want us to stop sharing?
They've cancelled beloved and acclaimed shows with reckless abandon, and they fired all of their diverse teams in the middle of projects without warning. We only have Netflix in my circle because one of us is paying.
I sincerely think we need to carry the energy we had for Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast when they turned hostile to their own fans and we should mass unsub if this goes live. We cannot allow this egregious level of rudeness to stand.

A little spicy sketch I’ve started, featuring Vaygan and Kairiss. I like the idea that in an AU, these two would romp together. A Harengon Bloodhunter and a Tiefling Warlock. Both in an awkward position with their day jobs, but somehow they make it work.

After having gone snow blind from looking at white houses all morning, I finally came across this beauty, built in 1905, in a refined Edwardian style with elements of the prior Arts and Crafts movement in London. It’s been carefully reno’d- cozy colorful, and a bit moody.
Greeted by a black staircase with an attractive black & white runner. The walls are a sophisticated, moody deep green with black trim.
Cozy and formal navy blue living room. But, there are whimsical touches, such as the pencil drawing over the fireplace.
A black dining room gets lots of light thru floor to ceiling windows and a door to the garden. Plus, a fireplace with a green tile hearth stands out.
Love this feature- windows open from the kitchen to the dining room.
The kitchen is fabulous. Trendy forest green cabinetry and a pink ceiling with a built-in matching pink cabinet.
The kitchen opens to a breezeway that leads to the patio.
Another bit of fun on the stairs - a framed Dracula poster.
Upstairs is a tranquil deep green and black main bedroom.
Beautifully updated bath with deep green subway tile and white mosaics.
A sophisticated nursery in deep blue and black with a stunning fireplace.
These beautiful stairs lead to the attic guest room.
The guest room has been remodeled with two big skylights and window seats, plus a sink.
Patio with stunning gardens.
Further back on the property is a wonderful greenhouse.

Giant moment of YIKES today: listening to a podfic on ao3, and then being smacked at the end with the podficcer's patreon advertisement, where folks pay to get access to podfic. Glancing at their works where this advertisement appears, it's all blanket permission stuff.
Folks getting into podfic: DO NOT DO THIS. First, advertising patreons on ao3 is a huge no go, even when you do it auditorily rather than via text. It is very much against terms of service, and puts the site at risk. Second, though: authors giving you blanket permission to podfic are not giving you permission to make money off their work. I can't believe I need to say this, but if you are going to record fic for money? You need that fic author's SPECIFIC permission. And you should probably be sharing any proceeds with them, though that is something you can negotiate individually. But taking something freely offered for free transformative use and making money from it? That is a huge violation of trust in the community, and could result in authors pulling their blanket permission.
But DG, you may say, I should get to turn my side hobby into a hustle just like fanartists do! Fine. If you are a skilled podficcer who produces high quality audio, you already have an option for that - go pick up work as an audiobook narrator on audible. It's not hard for a skilled reader to find ocassional gig work that way, and it's something I did years ago when I was poor and unemployed.
In summary: Don't put the whole podfic community at risk just to make a buck. Follow the rules of the sites you use, respect authors' rights, and look elsewhere for your side hustle.

we were the liminal kids. alive before the internet, just long enough we remember when things really were different.
when i work in preschools, the hand signal kids make for phone is a flat palm, their fingers like brackets. i still make the pinky-and-thumb octave stretch when i "pick up" to respond to them.
the symbol to save a file is a floppy disc. the other day while cleaning out my parents' house, i found a collection of over a hundred CDs, my mom's handwriting on each of them. first day of kindergarten. playlist for beach trip '94. i don't have a device that can play any of these anymore - none of my electronics are compatible. there are pieces of my childhood buried under these, and i cannot access them. but they do exist, which feels special.
my siblings and i recently spent hours digitizing our family's photos as a present for my mom's birthday. there's a year where the pictures just. stop. cameras on phones got to be too good. it didn't make sense to keep getting them developed. and there are a quite a few years that are lost to us. when we were younger, mementos were lost to floods. and again, while i was in middle school, google drive wasn't "a thing". somewhere out there, there are lost memories on dead laptops. which is to say - i lost it to the flood twice, kind of.
when i teach undergrad, i always feel kind of slapped-in-the-face. they're over 18, and they don't remember a classroom without laptops. i remember when my school put in the first smartboard, and how it was a huge privilege. i used the word walkman once, and had to explain myself. we are only separated by a decade. it feels like we are separated by so much more than that.
and something about ... being half-in half-out of the world after. it marks you. i don't know why. but "real adults" see us as lost children, even though many of us are old enough to have a mortgage. my little sister grew up with more access to the internet than i did - and she's only got 4 years of difference. i know how to write cursive, and i actually think it's good practice for kids to learn too - it helps their motor development. but i also know they have to be able to touch-type way faster than was ever required from me.
in between, i guess. i still like to hand-write most things, even though typing is way faster and more accessible for me. i still wear a pj shirt from when i was like 18. i don't really understand how to operate my parents' smart tv. the other day when i got seriously injured, i used hey siri to call my brother. but if you asked me - honestly, i prefer calling to texting. a life in anachronisms. in being a little out-of-phase. never quite in synchronicity.

It has come to my attention that some of you have not actually seen the music video for Ghengis Khan by Miike Snow so I've taken it on myself to end your ignorance of this piece of cinema
The greatest cinematic experience of 2016, weren't you watching?
They"re all but @-ing me on twitter
Never ask a girl if she wants to become a werewolf because she’s always going to say yes because girls love tearing things apart with their teeth and ripping people to shreds with their claws, it’s a foregone conclusion, an immutable fact of our universe really when ya think about it.
