Ended up taking a nap, because I slept terribly last night and isn't needed at the office (which is empty).
Had various disjointed dreams (as is the norm), but then had a visceral dream of "waking up" in my childhood home.
An understanding that I'd been so exhausted I had ended up not sleeping in my actual bed, which someone had made (I've never made my bed in my life, so obviously it was someone else fucking around in my room).
And on that bed, someone had left my home-made calculator (I've never made anything like this). And then I pressed some buttons on it, and it didn't work right anymore.
Someone had snuck into my room and broken my calculator.
Obviously distraught, I'd hurried out into the house to have someone answer for this terrible crime.
And in response to my shattered voice of someone breaking this thing that I'd worked so hard on (literally never seen it before in my life), my dad went "oh? That's too bad" (in the most insanely dismissive tone of voice I can imagine) whilst not even glancing away from the TV (I can barely remember my dad watching TV, when he could instead be outside, or sleeping).
And my heart was fucking aching.
And then I woke up.
So... not sure if that meant anything, or if I have some incredibly intense and probably-repressed feelings about being subject to privacy-and-personal-property-violations from my parents (I can't think of any time that that's been a problem).
Oh yeah, as I was trying to sleep one night, I started thinking about Sae and her various relationships with the Scions.
Under the cut because of minor spoilers, but mostly because it gets pretty long.
Y'shtola
Obviously, her relationship with Y'shtola is pretty much "annoying little sister". In the sense that if she can say something that will annoy Y'shtola, she will say it, just because.
Y'shtola is weathering this nightmarish scenario with serenity and maturity-... pft. No. Y'shtola will make a face at the mere mention of her name. And she has no qualms about throwing hands with a child. The child can violate the laws of nature "because she felt like it" so fuck 'em kids.
Thancred
Thancred's first impression of Sae is that she calls him old because he has white hair. He takes offense, and Sae smells weakness.
From that point onwards, Sae is likely to greet Thancred with cheerful phrases like "is your hair thinning?" that Thancred knows isn't true, but will still leave him staring into mirrors more than he used to, because what if.
Thancred is actually weirdly fond of the little menace, but don't tell her he said that. He can't stay in the same room as her without developing a twitch in his eye, but he does enjoy hearing about her escapades from the others.
Urianger
Urianger accidentally ended up being the Cool Uncle through means that is completely opaque to him.
The truth being that when he says "investigate" and means "reading books" and when he says "investigate" and means "infiltrating the enemy-group and earning their trust"? Everyone else just assumes that he's still reading books, and so offer no objections.
And since nobody else think that Urianger infiltrating the enemy is "risky", and he clearly tells everyone exactly what he's doing? Sae comes to the logical conclusion that he's actually Super Cool.
(Thancred is incredibly jealous of this, but he won't. Say. A. Word.)
Alphinaud
Sae's relationship with Alphinaud is really complicated. It starts off with him being polite and her being rude, and then halfway into things he starts realizing that he started it.
And his genuine upset at this leads to some stilted apologies from his side of things, which Sae doesn't really know what to do with. Because yeah sure, he started being rude, but Sae genuinely doesn't know how not to be rude.
(And she has absolutely no interest in learning.)
So they're friends? Kind of? But they mostly accomplish this by being rude to other people together. Sae very bluntly, and then Alphinaud swooping in to apologize for her behavior in the fanciest politest way possible of saying "and you smell bad too".
(They don't get to do this very often, but every time they do, everyone else is kind of impressed by the coordination.)
Alisaie
Alisaie is still kind of riding the high of Sae just... never mistaking one of the twins for the other. At all.
(To be fair, Sae didn't realize that they were even related to each other until they explicitly said so. Because Sae's perception of the world is... weird.)
Other than that though, she appreciates that her brother has "made a friend", and is very likely to applaud Sae's regular rudeness (just as Alphinaud hurriedly cuts in and doesn't join in with insulting them, because "there's such a thing as a time and place, dear sister").
They have a friendly understanding that exploding things is fun, and paperwork (and politics) is awful.
(And if Alisaie is jealous of how close Sae is to the WoL, then that's not something that she's ever going to voice.)
Krile
Krile is mostly confused about how young Sae is early on, but accepts that she's clearly too stubborn to keep out of fights, and kind of just assumes that she's a sort-of-mascot or something.
During Dawntrail when she actually properly joins them in the field, she realizes that no. They really weren't kidding about her combat-potential. What the fuck.
She's seen what being in her line-of-fire gets Thancred and Y'shtola however, so she's perfectly content to stay all the way back here. Don't you worry.
(She's a very wise woman.)
Minfilia
Sees an echo-powered mage in the company of an echo-powered adventurer, and wisely decides not to interfere with their dynamic.
Sae refers to her as "boss-lady" a few times, and that's about as interesting as that relationship gets.
Papalymo
Takes one look at Sae and sees a child way to fucking stubborn to stop, and just kind of shrugs. This one isn't his responsibility, so he'll just leave that in the hands of the WoL.
Sae does interact with him a few times, and genuinely respects his opinion on things. Which is really weird, until you realize that he sees her as a slightly-younger-mirror to Lyse.
As in, he talks with her as he would a young adult. With no emotional undertone of condescension for her age, but still with the experienced wisdom of an elder.
Lyse
Lyse thinks that exploding things is cool, but not as fun as beating people up with her bare fists. Sae reluctantly accepts that they'll have to agree to disagree on this.
Then Sae leaves the Scions to become a political leader, and Sae decides that this is why you shouldn't be a MNK. Clearly all of that fist-fighting has given the woman brain-damage. So sad.
They don't meet up very often anymore, but when they do, this type of bickering is inevitable. They both consider each other "good friends".
Estinien
Estinien does frown a bit when he first sees Sae on the battlefield, because he does think that children should be protected. But she can clearly handle herself, and she's not Ishgardian so their culture might be different, so he doesn't say anything about it.
Once he starts traveling the world and stumbling across them as Sae's exploding something "for funsies" enough times? He carefully underlines that "none of my business" in his mind several times.
Sae does call him "old" (because of his white hair), and Estinien kind of just nods along, because some days he really does feel way too old. So he's really not very interesting to poke fun at, and he's blunt enough that he appreciates her rude and "uncouth" language.
So they kind of just... slip past each other to do their respective jobs.
G'raha Tia
Sae was incredibly upset about everyone around her falling into a coma, and even if it was to "save the world", she's not happy about it.
If G'raha needed to be saved, Sae would be very reluctant to do so. Like, she'd happily explode some enemies and then mock him for being useless in a fight. But "coming to his rescue"? She'd complain the whole time.
G'raha accepts this about her, and is perfectly willing to shoulder the blame in this case. (The WoL gives them both a lot of unimpressed looks about this dynamic.)
Sae doesn't really insult G'raha, and prefers to instead not-notice him. Which kind of shows that she knows that she's being unreasonable, but also being too stubborn to change.
Endwalker's finale doesn't endear G'raha to Sae any further (this is about the time she starts to figure out what they're all doing). And she sighs a lot when the WoL decides to invite G'raha out to their adventures at the end of it.
(She doesn't actually complain, and she gets a bit distracted from being upset at her adventuring-dynamic with the WoL being interfered with, when they end up going to the Thirteen.)
But in the simplest of terms, whereas Estinien is an oddly polite "non-interference", G'raha is at best a frosty kind of acknowledgment.
Tataru
When Tataru says "jump", Sae jumps.
Sae is willing to mock literally anyone and everyone, but if Tataru starts glaring at her? Sae hides behind the WoL.
This is a mix of things, one of them being that she actually knows Tataru (kind of) from before the WoL entered her life. Because Tataru has connections to the adventurer-guild, and Sae was very much a person in that guild that everyone paid attention to (even if they didn't want to).
So when the WoL joins the Scions, and Sae "comes along for the ride", Tataru is the one who frowns thoughtfully at her for a long time before accepting her into the organization.
Tataru isn't some kind of tyrant, and considers Sae an important member of their group, but that initial ability that she once had to take Sae away from the person who listened to her? (Because surely the WoL would choose the Scions over her. Just like how everyone always chooses other things instead of her.)
Sae never forgets it, and so when Tataru complains about their coffers, Sae's back straightens and dungeons start getting cleared out of their valuables really quickly.

No only do I think it shouldn't be illegal to hire people because of past convictions, I actually think it should be a protected class you cannot deny someone employment because of. Like I don't think you should be able to say "Sorry Frank, you can't be a firefighter even though you have experience doing this, because the place you got that experience was in prison".
Prison time is supposed to be the penance for the crime, right? Once they're out, the slate has been wiped clean, right? And if that's not the case, then what the fuck was the point of the prison sentence, HMMM>?>>>>>?????
I agree with the principle on this but you're REALLY trying to simplify a situation that is anything but simple.
Like, this is literally my job. Looking at criminal records and having conversations about hiring people with them. I really don't want it to seem like I'm having a go at you because this is something that needs to be discussed. But like I said, it is NOT simple. Plus we're likely in different countries so employment and prison standards are probably different, to say nothing of what happens AFTER prison.
But I think we can agree that Prison is an incredibly stressful and highly controlled environment that often traumatises those inside, it is why it has SUCH a poor track record for reoffending. I absolutely agree that there needs to be a serious rework and look at the entire system and especially when people get out. Worldwide. Some countries are better than others, but across the board I think the majority can agree that support for people once they leave is pretty sad and they 100% struggle with employment, housing, and reintegration. Prison is intended to be a punishment. It always has been. One can try and look at it in good faith, as a 'lets remove someone from a toxic situation so they're not in the place that encouraged them to break the law', but we all know it is not that.
Wiping the slate clean as soon as someone is done with prison does not help, it puts other people at risk.
Employers have a duty of care to not only their own staff, but also their customers, members of the public, and the environment. And they need to keep this in mind when recruiting.
WHAT people have done is the most important factor in my opinion, with WHEN being right behind it.
Your scenario of a firefighter learning in prison being unable to get a job in that field upon leaving would depend on a number of factors. Firefighters don't JUST run into blazing buildings and operate heavy machinery. They also have to provide medical care, handle vulnerable adults, enter into people's homes for a variety of reasons. What your guy has done is a massively important factor to consider when deciding whether or not they can be trusted around people's belongings, medical information, drugs, vulnerable adults, children, and animals.
Four scenarios, if I may, all real, three i know of personally, a fourth I have heard of through a friend:
Older gentleman has a violent assault charge from the 90's, he has told us this on his security forms. His criminal record check comes back clean. To me, this is a non-issue, not even worth bringing up with his manager. It's been MORE THAN 20 YEARS. This information goes no further than my eyes. I got an explanation, for privacy I won't give details, but it was a one off incident unlikely to ever occur again and frankly, i shook the man's hand for doing it. In a situation like that, he did the right thing. The other person just got very hurt and thus the law had a different opinion.
Young lad, driving under the influence (not drink) during Covid, he has told us this on his security forms. Nothing comes up on his criminal record check. THIS is something that prompts a number of conversations. Yes, arguably it is of lesser concern than a violent assault charge. But. It is recent, it shows reckless behaviour not only with his safety but also the safety of others, it hints that there is potential addiction issues that could could make him unreliable or a risk around heavy machinery or hazardous chemicals. The first conversation is with him, asking for more info, what prompted the situation, how he's doing now, etc, and letting him know that I will have to discuss this further with his Hiring Manager. The second conversation is with the Hiring Manager and providing them with the information that the Candidate has agreed to share (always with their permission). Again, I will not give the personal details, but it was another one of those one off incidents that is unlikely to ever happen again, making the concerns we had regarding him absolutely null and void. We happily took him on and he's been a real gem ever since.
Conversely, I present you with a highly skilled man, he's got a doctorate, he's got twenty years of experience, he lives near-by, he is EXACTLY what you need. He was also done for Domestic Violence. Assault. Violating a Restraining Order. Slander and Libel. Theft. These occurred ten years ago. He has not lost his previous job over them, did not go to prison over them, wasn't even fined over them. Would you hire this man?
I knew this person as a friend, not a work colleague. I did not learn about his charges until I met the woman he did them to when I was also looking into bringing up legal action against him for IP and Trademark theft. We even considered the UK equivalent of Small Claims due to the equipment and personal belongings he refused to return. But regardless of my personal feelings, if those turned up on one of my checks, it would be my professional opinion that we did not take the risk. The ultimate decision would not lie with me, but someone much higher in the chain, but the violation of a restraining order, slander, and libel, paints the picture of a vindictive man with a vengeful streak who would be a major risk to the company, its staff, reputation, and our customers.
And this one, I have friends in childcare. I'm giving you a scenario one of them had to deal with last year.
You work with children.
You are given the information of a lady who just got out of prison. She has stated she has nothing on her criminal record. The checks come back with Child Neglect charges on her record. Under UK Law, she cannot work with children. Her application had to be rejected, but when asked for more info, she tells you that its all blown out of proportion, her ex accused her of abusing and neglecting their kids which is ridiculous. She loves them and would never harm them, she has child care qualifications for goodness' sake! She's more qualified to care for them than him! She was only in there for 80 days at that, its nothing, a slap on the wrist.
Would you still hire this woman?
If your idea of wiping the slate clean after prison is actioned: Would you even know about it?
Now, that last one is probably a little unfair. It's asking you to consider a child's safety and obviously you're not going to hire someone with a recent child neglect/abuse or even a CSAM charge to work near children.
So how about this, hypothetical, because the industry you're working in also matters for this sort of thing:
Delivery driver. You have two potential candidates for this delivery driver job. One has charges for dealing drugs some five years ago, weed they tell you if asked. The other has charges for taking drugs, also five years ago. Cocaine they tell you if asked.
Which one would you hire knowing this information?
Now imagine if those records didn't exist and they still showed up for this delivery driver job.
Seems like it would be a non-issue, and, in a perfect world, I would agree. But the question I have for you now is: Which one, if they reoffended, would be more dangerous behind the wheel of a car or a bike?
I know which one I consider more dangerous.
Knowing about it ahead of time gives you the chance to check with them and discuss with the manager about whether or not they're willing to accept the risk of someone driving under the influence if they've been clean for X amount of time, if we should give them an extended probation period, or if we should turn their application down.
It's a wonderful idea in theory, but like many wonderful ideas, the actual reality, operation, and logistics of it are anything but simple.
So, without my side-pain and with medicine for my spine-pain, my body decided to invent shoulder-pain.
Now, after a bit of experimenting, I found that this seems to be caused by me sleeping with a "supportive pillow" (which I started to do to reduce shoulder-pain). So I stopped that and now only have pain in the one shoulder.
Which sucks, don't get me wrong, but is a lot nicer than having it in both.
Currently, it's 2.30am and I've crawled out of bed because my body is screaming that I can't remain horizontal because there's too much pressure on my ribs.
As in, you know that pain you might get if you're leaning on a hard surface for too long, where your ribs in the front start aching from being weirdly compressed? Yeah that. I'm getting that from lying down now. For some reason.

So I tried opening the log-files for the XIVLauncher, just in case that would give me any clues.
I started today's game-session at 5am (yeah, I know) and kept the game running the entire day without issues. Then at 5pm the Launcher says it did something.
Specifically, it says that it tried to contact Steam. And received an error for doing so (because I don't have the game through Steam).
Now, I don't know if the timing for this lines up all that well (it feels like it might be a bit off?), but that sure sounds suspicious.
Anyway, this means that I can try to check the "ignore Steam"-button on the XIVLauncher, and see if that somehow stops this from ever becoming a problem again? Despite it never being a problem before 7.51?
