i found something today and instantly recognized it
so like. okay so like you have this online ecosystem where everyone's all fractured and algorithmically siloed into their little groups, right?? and the only contact they have with outsiders is through screenshots, meaning you're only ever seeing the stuff that's objectionable or funny enough to be screenshotted in the first place. and the people who rise to the rank of screenshot curator are the people who spend all day sniffing around the other camps for stuff to screenshot. so you have this epistemological chokepoint dictated by someone whose main hobby is sneaking around with a camera getting all up in someone else's business and making it into a public spectacle. and the easiest way to make it into a public spectacle is to make your audience scared and angry. and the easiest way to do that is to play on existing negative biases, like pushing an open door yknow?? so you have this dynamic that rewards prejudice and elevates it to a position of narrative authority. and the people who can do this the most effectively and consistently are the ones who have no qualms about stalking marginalised people and crafting narratives about how they're scary and evil. and you reeeaaally gotta question whether or not any of this is actually beneficial to anyone or if it's just doing to you what fox news did to your dad, yknow??

besides the detached banality of their casual approach to cruelty, what comes out in the epstein emails is how profoundly stupid the elites all are. epstein, summers, thiel, bannon, businessmen and hedge fund managers are deeply, deeply stupid people, sending each other NYT op-ed articles to understand current events or a "hey check this out!!!" link to a wikipedia article, grasping at russia's moves after the crimea annexation with the profound thought of "europe's borders... have always changed," obsessed with IQ and scientific racism. the most sophisticated understanding comes from bloomberg subscriptions or junior analysts in some firm, not any of them. everyone in power is an evil clown fuelled by a lifestyle of zero consequences and zero accountability

A reminder to anyone bewailing Louis XVI's execution today - Louis absolutely did not have to end up on the scaffold. Republicanism was only the position of an extreme minority in 1789. Had he accepted the changes of 1789-91 with good grace, Louis would have kept his crown and his head. Had he followed through on the reformist spirit he showed at times in the late 1780s by enthusiastically backing the Third Estate and then the National Assembly's more progressive elements, he might even have gone down in History as one of its best and most astute rulers.
But he didn't.
What he tried to do instead was to play the Assembly along, while surreptitiously courting counter-revolutionary elements at home and liaising with foreign powers to forcibly restore the status quo ante. He intended, in that event, to subject those who had dared oppose and limit his power to 'the full rigour of the law' - in other words, to capital punishment. Would he also have gone back on his pre-revolutionary abolition of torture, now considering reformism a 'weakness'? Would he have completely restored the horrific punishments of the Ancien Régime? Could anyone at the time have said with confidence that he wouldn't? And what would foreign invasion have meant for ordinary people - no doubt, what it usually meant - death, atrocities, requisitions, destruction of the necessities of life...
Louis XVI, like Charles I before him, double-dealt to the point it was impossible to trust him. In other words, like Charles, he fucked about. So in the end, also like Charles, he found out.
feeling conflicted about reformism as a tactic
historically ive avoided out of weariness of institutonal capture but i wonder if the reformism provides the platform to create a political cadre without falling into the kind of cultural isolation that most intentionally political groups have
