He tried with futility to open his eyes.

His body refused to respond.

Another wave of pain rippled from his feet up through his head and a miserable sound escaped his throat. The sound reached his ears from far away in a scratchy tone, drawing his attention to his sore throat. Hiccup attempted to swallow, the dry walls of his throat sticking together painfully, causing another pained wince. He fought down another whimper in an attempt to prevent more pain.

Instead, he focused on his eyes once more, squeezing them shut tighter before again attempting to open them. At first, he believed he was unsuccessful, bleary vision met only by darkness. Then upon several rapid blinks that sent his ears ringing, a fuzzy dim light came into view.

A faint orange glow danced along the walls of what he assumed must be a cave judging by the uneven texture and natural arch of the ceiling.

A distant part of his consciousness, the part driven by the natural instinct to survive, warned him to check his surroundings for danger, to assess the situation. The rest of his mind however, felt disjointed and heavy as it lagged behind. Exhaustion and pain driving an urge to pull the darkness back in like a blanket in order to get just 10 more minutes of rest.

Where was he?

Gods, why did he hurt so much?

The ringing and pounding ricocheting through the inside of his skull mangled any hope of following through with his thoughts. Slowly, the storm in his bones seemed to settle as he lay still.

He was unsure how much time passed, if any, before a distant sound met his ears, causing him to peel his eyes open again with great effort.

When had he closed them?

That nagging part of his coherent mind recognized the sound.

The sound of large, flapping wings.

Toothless?

Hiccup tried desperately to connect any two thoughts together. To place where he was, where Toothless was, what had happened.

The flapping stopped.

For a tired moment, Hiccup wondered if it had just been the blood rushing through his head.

However, just as he was able to form that thought, a new sound approached.

The unmistakable sound of footsteps.

Hiccups body stiffened, nearly drawing out a moan of pain.

He could draw three conclusions from the sound of the approaching gait.

Bipedal.

Lightweight.

Definitely not Toothless.

After a momentary panic caused by the inability to get his body to move, instinct took over. Hiccup let his body relax back down, eyes open only a fraction, hoping to maintain the pretence of his previously unconscious state. Pain shocked through him at the adjustment but he willed himself not to respond just as someone entered his view.

It was a person.

As far as Hiccup could tell it was a person, though the figure was blurry and hard to pick out details in the dim lighting. From what he could make out, they were wearing a blue cloak, the hood pulled up over their head. A large white cape that almost brushed the ground behind their feet was draped over their shoulders.

In their arms was a bundle of something he could not quite detail.

The figure entered rather quietly, as if trying to remain undetected, pausing at the entrance for a moment before continuing in on light feet. They approached, coming to a stop near Hiccup's head to lay down the arm full of what must be some sort of supplies, with a soft clatter just out of his view.

Without a word, they grabbed some small logs from said pile and turned away, taking a few steps towards the other end of the cave.

For the first time Hiccups eyes registered the small fire, which must have been the supply of the dim lighting, as the figure stooped down in front of it, gently adding the logs to feed the barely glowing embers.

A breeze swirled through the cave just then, instantly breathing life into the flames and igniting the cave walls with light.

Hiccups face scrunched involuntarily as his eyes were stung by the sudden change in lighting, renewing the pain inside his head.

As his eyes adjusted he brought his focus back on the stranger by the fire as they coaxed the logs into place with a long stick. With the cave better lit, he could make out more details of the stranger, though still with some haziness to his vision.

It was at this moment Hiccup saw that the white fabric draped over the persons shoulders was not a cape. In fact it wasn't even fabric.

It looked like… feathers.

He blinked again, attempting to clear his vision or rid himself of what surely was a hallucination.

His vision cleared only slightly but eliminated any doubt.

They were feathers. Soft, snow-white feathers on long wings growing straight out of this person's back, lightly brushing the floor as they tended the fire.

It struck him then that this was not a person. Well, not a human anyways.

Gobbers voice drifted in from distant memory. All his stories of trolls and gnomes, mara and… Alfar.

The connection washed over him like a bucket of ice water.

As his mind supplied the realization, Hiccup was unable to restrain the startled squeak that escaped him as his entire aching body stiffened.

The figure whirled around to face him at the sound, their white wings flourishing behind them, sending a twist of air across the cave.

A low voice exclaimed something Hiccups ears did not quite register and the being took a few steps towards him.

Instinct drove Hiccup once again his groggy body wrenched to a seated position, ignoring hot pain signals shooting through him, as his chest began heaving with labored breaths. Though the edges of his vision prickled with black spots his eyes stayed focused on the creature in front of him, darting frantically across the large span of wings that nearly touched each end of the cave.
