can't they be happy for once
WBAUWHDUDBISHDEG
my petty gripe about anachronism in historical/fantasy/spec-fic worlds is attraction language.
Weโve all heard the โshould you use modern queer labels or notโ argument but honestly even when people go โtrue, they wouldnโt use the labels โaromanticโ or โasexual,โโ so often the characters describe their experiences as โI never felt romantic attractionโ or โI donโt feel attracted to anyoneโ in ways that makes me go. You are stilllllll thinking about this in an extraordinarily modern online way. That 19th century steampunk detective man will NOT be angsting about having never felt romantic attraction, he would be angsting about being unable to feel moved by the beauty or charm of a woman, or something. And I do think that โattractivenessโ language is different from the identity-level idea of experiencing attractionโSherlock Holmes does not talk about not experiencing attraction, but when Watson says โWhat a very attractive woman!โ Holmes responds โIs she? I did not observe.โ (And then Watson calls him an inhuman automaton and calculating-machine and Holmes calls Watsonโs judgement biased). Never swayed by the attractiveness of a man or woman, never desirous of marriage, never charmed by the delights of love, all of these feel like some of the variety of ways that someone in this milieu might describe an ace- or aro-spectrum identity more than โnever felt attractionโ does. Mostly because, like the terms for aromantic and asexual themselves, nailing down an exclusively attraction-based definition of a-spec identities is a relatively new and extremely post-AVEN thing. And yet in fiction everybody knows to articulate their experience as feeling sexual/romantic attraction. And I always want to go nooo how would THIS character think about it?? Not how you think this character SHOULD think about it, how would THIS person in THIS context articulate their feelings?
high-tension romantic scenarios to get lost in
fixing each other's collar/zipper/tie/etc - getting unexpectedly close, breath catching when they realize (or their light touches burning into the other's skin)
^ also moving someone's hair out of their face/behind their ear
^ or touching someone's necklace/bracelet/watch
eye contact in a crowded room, but not exchanging any words/expressions - just looking at each other, the rest of the world going still.
^a(n unironic) wink in this situation. or an eyebrow raise, lick or bite of lips, or head tilt. there's something in the subtlety of it - like "this is between us"
pulling someone in by their belt loops??? this is so random idk
feeling the other's breath/lips ghosting their neck
any sort of whisper. anywhere. goddamn.
a long pause when someone is speaking, as though they lost their train of thought while looking at the other person
their bodies accidentally pressed together - being stuck in a small space, falling onto one another, or having to sit really close together. the pause when it's realized.
^this but they're hiding
"make me"
"i dare you"
"and if i do?"/"what will i get (if i do)?" "show/tell me what you want"
the pinky reach before holding hands for the first time
slow dancing (the hand placement, eye contact, proximity, MUSIC)
teaching the other something that involves physical contact (like holding their hands while trying to balance on a skateboard, or guiding their hands somewhere)
eye contact, waiting for one to fold
"don't do that to me" (tempting the other)
sharing earbuds - forced proximity, the vulnerability in sharing things that matter to them
i'm back!! i'm in a huge slump rn, so submit to my "ask" box if there is anything you want to see :) alsoo if you have anything to add to this list, reply to the post!! i love hearing what you guys have to say
Soft prompts to make you YEARN
โญ brushing your thumb over their knuckles while you're both not saying a word, just existing quietly in the same space like it's the most sacred thing.
โญ them absentmindedly playing with the hem of your sleeve because they want to touch you but arenโt ready to say it yet.
โญ โcan i kiss you?โย whispered like theyโre afraid the moment might shatter if they speak too loud.
โญ their voice cracking just a little when they say your name for the first time in a long time.
โญ them resting their forehead against yours and justโฆ staying there. No words. No movement. Just breath. Just nearness.
โญ sharing headphones and they keep looking at you during the best part of the song. you donโt even know what the songย meansย to them but suddenly it meansย everythingย to you.
โญ "stay the night?"ย said so soft it mightโve been a wish.
โญ dragging their fingers gently down your back like theyโre trying to memorize the map of your spine.
โญ tracing your features with their fingertip like you're a sculpture in a museum and they wereย notย supposed to touch you, but god, they canโt help it.
โญ โdonโt leave yet.โย not because youโre going somewhere. but because being with you is the safest theyโve felt all day.
โญ their voice in the dark. low. quiet. like the night is just for you two.
โญ "this reminded me of you"ย and itโs just a stupid rock or a weird leaf but you hold onto it like it's a diamond because it'sย youย to them.
โญ laying in bed, face smushed into the pillow, sleep-drunk and murmuring,ย โyou make me feel like iโm home.โ

10 Non-Lethal Injuries to Add Pain to Your Writing
New Part: 10 Lethal Injury Ideas
If you need a simple way to make your characters feel pain, here are some ideas:ย
1. Sprained Ankle
A common injury that can severely limit mobility. This is useful because your characters will have to experience a mild struggle and adapt their plans to their new lack of mobiliy. Perfect to add tension to a chase scene.
2. Rib Contusion
A painful bruise on the ribs can make breathing difficult, helping you sneak in those ragged wheezes during a fight scene. Could also be used for something sport-related! It's impactful enough to leave a lingering pain but not enough to hinder their overall movement.
3. Concussions
This common brain injury can lead to confusion, dizziness, and mood swings, affecting a characterโs judgment heavily. It can also cause mild amnesia.
I enjoy using concussions when you need another character to subtly take over the fight/scene, it's an easy way to switch POVs. You could also use it if you need a 'cute' recovery moment with A and B.
4. Fractured Finger
A broken finger can complicate tasks that require fine motor skills. This would be perfect for characters like artists, writers, etc. Or, a fighter who brushes it off as nothing till they try to throw a punch and are hit with pain.
5. Road Rash
Road rash isย an abrasion caused by friction. Aka scraping skin. The raw, painful sting resulting from a fall can be a quick but effective way to add pain to your writing. Tip: it's great if you need a mild injury for a child.
6. Shoulder Dislocation
This injury can be excruciating and often leads to an inability to use one arm, forcing characters to confront their limitations while adding urgency to their situation. Good for torture scenes.
7. Deep Laceration
A deep laceration is a cut that requires stitches. As someone who got stitches as a kid, they really aren't that bad! A 2-3 inch wound (in length) provides just enough pain and blood to add that dramatic flair to your writing while not severely deterring your character.
This is also a great wound to look back on since it often scars. Note: the deeper and wider the cut the worse your character's condition. Don't give them a 5 inch deep gash and call that mild.
8. Burns
Whether from fire, chemicals, or hot surfaces, burns can cause intense suffering and lingering trauma. Like the previous injury, the lasting physical and emotional trauma of a burn is a great wound for characters to look back on.
If you want to explore writing burns, read here.
9. Pulled Muscle
This can create ongoing pain and restrict movement, offering a window to force your character to lean on another. Note: I personally use muscle related injuries when I want to focus more on the pain and sprains to focus on a lack of mobility.
10. Tendonitis
Inflammation of a tendon can cause chronic pain and limit a character's ability to perform tasks they usually take for granted. When exploring tendonitis make sure you research well as this can easily turn into a more severe injury.
This is a quick, brief list of ideas to provide writers inspiration. Since it is a shorter blog, I have not covered the injuries in detail. This is inspiration, not a thorough guide. Happy writing! :)

Star Trek: Ad Astra per Aspera
Idk man I just wanted to draw dad Hiccup๐Apparently hearing some gossip he doesn't approve of โ
I gasped
i think about how sensitive Jack is a lot.
like, yea, he's a trickster. but he's also incredibly lonely and had been isolated for 300 years without any answers as to why. he might've acted out, played pranks, or done things he shouldn't ( breaking into the workshop ) for attention because any is better than none. he might've lashed out several times over because he didn't understand why any of this was happening to him.
Bunny made Jack cry. it's not something super obvious, like Jack sobbing ( tho that would've been valid, tbh ), but you can see him tear up at the reminder that no human can see him. that no one believes in him. and that the only ones who do seem to have an arms length distance with him or hate him.
Jack blames himself for what happened to Sandy. he thinks he didn't do anything, that he didn't try hard enough, when he was the one who first noticed Sandy struggling. he thought he didn't do enough.
we see it in how he's curled up by the window, his hoodie is up, his eyes are welled up again, and he just looks like he shut the world out because of guilt. North had to cheer him up for him to smile again.
and then we see his tears for a third time when Jaime finally sees him. his first contact with a human in 300 years. the first time someone believed in him like that.
what kinda gets me about Jack is that i wanna say he isn't obvious, but he is. he talks to people who can't hear him, tries to tell Jamie and co. that all the fun they had wasn't the Tooth Fairy, that it was him who did that. he blatantly asks what does he have to do to get attention.
Jack knows the kids like his snow, his winter, but also knows that he doesn't exist to them. and Bunny bringing it up made him retaliate by purposefully acting like he didn't know what Bunny was.
to me, it came off as Jack trying to get Bunny to understand, for even a second, what he had been feeling and experiencing for his entire existence. but what happened instead is that Bunny doubled down and went to where it'd hurt most ( "people believe in me." ).
but even when the worst happens and Bunny is no longer believed in, Jack empathizes with that. he tries to apologize, saying he didn't mean for any of this to happen. because even if he didn't like Bunny, he wouldn't wish for someone good to not be believed in. and, as much of a hardass as Bunny can be, Jack knows he's good.
and Jack takes it hard when Pitch isolates him further ( "i make a mess of everything." ), because of course he does. he's alone again. how couldn't it be his fault, after he had just gotten to warm up around everyone, after he had earned their trust?
how many times has he had to ask "is it me?"
i can't imagine the euphoria Jack felt when he had answers, even if they were what could be considered the bare minimum. i can't imagine the euphoria he felt when he was finally seen. when Jamie hugged him.
yea, Jack is a tricky one, and always has been ( we can see that in his memories ), but a part of that became a way for him to cope.
in comparison to everyone else, he's just a kid.
