Hi! I love your blog! I have a question about a type of accessory that I frequently saw in dramas. (Tried to find out about it myself but I can't read chinese.đŁ) Can you tell me what those beautiful hanging pendants of jade and tassels, tied to the waist, are called? Thank you for any information you have!
Hi! Iâm glad you love my blog, and thanks for the question! (Illustration Via)
Yaopei/è °äœ© (lit. âwaist wearâ) is the general term for traditional Chinese waist ornaments, of which there are several types. Yaopei are typically decorated with jade (Yupei/ç䜩), as the Chinese have revered jade since ancient times, and would (and still do) adorn themselves with it in various forms, including jewelry, hair ornaments, and waist ornaments.Â
Those beautiful long pendants of jade and tasselshanging from the waist that you see in Chinese dramas are a type of Yaopei called Jinbu/çŠæ„. An accessory worn since ancient times, Jinbu was initially used to hold down the skirt. Below - Jinbu in the Chinese drama series Nirvana in Fire.
Jinbu typically consists of one or more jades hanging in combination with beads and a decorative silk tassel (Liusu/æ”è). Some of these jade stones are in the shape of bi-discs and Huang/ç, an arc shape with one hole on the top and two on the sides.Â
Apart from the symbolism of the jade and the beauty of the stone, the ancient Chinese appreciated the delicate tinkling sound the jades made as they touched each other when the wearer moved. Below - historical Ming dynasty gold-and-jade Jinbu (left), modern Tang-style gold Jinbu (right).Â
Worn by men and women, Jinbu served as symbols of virtue and emblems of rank. Below - illustrations of ladies from the Han dynasty (left) and Ming dynasty (right) wearing Jinbu.
Due to the hanfu revival movement, the wearing of Jinbu is making a bit of a comeback. Below - modern Jinbu from ç§éšć€éłçćș.
Beautiful and versatile, Jinbu are a great way to accessorize any hanfu outfit.
For more posts on Jinbu and other types of Yaopei, please see my waist ornament tag.Â
Hope this helps!

so i might be stepping out of line making this post but i feel it needs to be made so yolo i guess.
i know a lot of millenials have a sort of knee-jerk negative reaction towards abrahamic religions (really mostly christianity and judaism) and i understand. really, i get it. my dad is a pastor, and he used his religon to abuse, demean, and control me at every opportunity. he regularly tells my sisters that heâs âso sad im going to hellâ and other sundry passive aggressive nonsense, so trust me i get it. i understand how a certain religion can be triggering to someone.
but there is a very important point here, and i really hope you understand this.
you cannot let it make you prejudiced, and, let me be clear here, im talking specifically about antisemitism.
i know exactly whats going on in your head, because for a long time it was what was going on in my head. you hear the word âjudaismâ and you have flashbacks to sunday school and the old testament and all the times you sat in a church and felt personally attacked, and you associate that with judaism and jewish people because most of the things that upset you were in the old testament.Â
you can have your triggers, but you canât let those triggers become an excuse to further marginalize a minority thats already attacked from literally every position of power there is. every major religion has leaders who are antisemitic, every country has a history of marginalizing jewish people, every person on the planet grows up in an inherently antisemitic world and has to unlearn that sort of toxic mindset.
and maybe this post should have been made by a jewish person, or somebody with more education on the subject than me but i think its really important that people donât let their personal experiences with organized religion turn them into the kind of prejudiced person that hurt them in the first place.Â
as a romni i have a shared tragedy with jewish people, so i feel like it was easier for me to step back and be like âwoah, your thought process here is super toxic and you need to stopâ but i feel like a lot of white christian-raised people donât really have that touchstone and need somebody to be like âwake up, what you are doing is wrongâ
I can remove this if you want but I feel a strong need to reblog
as a jew, iâm gonna add to this.
first of all. we donât have a lot of allies speaking for us genuinely, instead of because of some sort of twisted âjesus was jewishâ or âi can secretly defend my faith or politics using jews as pawnsâ so when yâall do it means a lot. we donât see it much, so donât feel bad for making this post.
second of all, the part that you didnât know, through no real fault of your own, is that the version you learn in sunday school or from non-jewish sources? that isnât even remotely how jews understand that source.
jews have a totally different relationship with our holy text than christians do. every jewish person is expected to know the âold testamentâ cover to cover then to freely access and participate in millennia of commentary and debate on it. the core book of jewish law is just a book of debates and discussions, many of which donât even come with firm answers. and whenever itâs printed, itâs printed with centuries worth of commentary in the margins.
if you have and issue with or felt personally attacked by any part of the âold testamentâ i can guarantee that there are pages and pages of jewish commentary about that from the point of view you were looking for and several dozen you havenât even considered. jews have never stopped questioning and arguing about this thing.
so when non-jews make the assumption that our religion is some sort of backwards or primitive thing based on a text they donât care for, they are doing jews a double disservice.
i guarantee you some 1st century BCE judaen made the point that not eating shrimp because a book says to is kinda silly far more eloquently than you did, pal. heck. thereâs a rabbi in the talmud who just straight up becomes a heretic.
judaism has been around and has been evolving as a culture and a religion longer than christianity has existed. itâs one of the oldest living traditions on the planet and its still growing and evolving.

Early designs and the finished versions for Diego, Orbot and KC from the Nickelodeon short âSpace Mission:Dangerâ. Its been almost two years since I did these, they were such fun characters to draw, and I got a looots of help with making them from the leaders of the project Lynn Wang and Ed Skudder. ^^
Matthieu is an amazing designer and we were so excited that he wanted to work on the short with us!Â
University of Toronto faculty issued an urgent warning to school administrators that a controversial professor popular with the âalt-rightâ is designing digital tools that will target and harass professors for ideological reasons.
Is Jordan Peterson becoming too big of a problem for Canadaâs largest university to ignore?
â
Submitted by peonyb0.
The letter describes a website Peterson is building âfor the purpose of identifying and ranking courses and professors that he advocates should be removed from the university.â
Administrators were warned the website will âgenerate harassmentâ and lead to âunsafe work and study conditions for students, faculty and staff.â
[âŠ]
âThey can use the website to distinguish between people who are credible and people who arenât and maybe we can drop the damn enrollment in those horrible courses by 75% over the next three years ⊠itâs in their best interest both, I would say, spiritually and economically to avoid those courses and those disciplines like the plague and then maybe we can get the disciplines that have become entirely corrupt and the ones that started that way to put themselves back together before they run themselves out of existence completely, and I might as well name a few of the disciplines that i think are particularly reprehensible to begin with ⊠So, as I said already, womenâs studies, and all the ethnic studies and racial studies, studies groups, man, those things have to go and the faster they go the better. It would have been better if they had never been part of the university to begin with as far as I can tell. Sociology, thatâs corrupt. Anthropology, thatâs corrupt. English literature, thatâs corrupt. Maybe the worse offenders are the faculties of education.â -Jordan Peterson
The letter also calls attention to Petersonâs at times violent tone, quoting one video where Peterson suggests anyone who speaks like a âpostmodern neo-Marxistâ should be âpunched in the nose hard enough to knock you out.â
Concerned faculty say the violent rhetoric is especially disturbing in light of Petersonâs fixation on women and racialized groups:
âIn public online remarks more broadly, Prof. Peterson regularly describes women and gender studies and what he refers to as âracial and ethnic group studiesâ as pathological, a cancer, and in other strongly denigrating terms. The launch of this website must be put in this context in order to fully understand it as a platform that will generate harassment.â
