Sometimes it doesn’t hurt to revisit some of the basic building blocks that form the foundation of what we do. And so we have gathered together a few of our most popular past articles that deal with the fundamental aspects of measuring and analysing noise and vibration data.
When measuring noise and vibration in rotating machines, especially complex devices like automobile engines, it is very important to fully understand what is being measured and what analyses need to be performed on the resulting data. Even the most sophisticated measurement systems will not produce meaningful results if used incorrectly. The testing of noise & vibration during development can be important factors in a final design. Poor measurement or analysis can have huge consequences on the success of a new vehicle.

When monitoring vibration on large gas or steam turbines and generators with fluid-film bearings, the relative movement of the shaft within the bearing is typically measured by a pair of shaft proximity (eddy current) transducers. Data from these transducers is used to a variety of plots on a condition monitoring system including orbit displays and shaft centreline plots.

We can distinguish between quantities which have magnitude only and those which have magnitude and are also associated with a direction in space. The former are called scalars, for example, mass and temperature. The latter are called vectors, for example, acceleration, velocity and displacement.

Pendulum Waves. Beautiful...
Fifteen uncoupled simple pendulums of monotonically increasing lengths dance together to produce visual traveling waves, standing waves, beating, and (seemingly) random motion.
Normally when we are analysing a signal it is a purely real signal, that is it has no imaginary part. A classic example is of course a sine wave. When we analyse a signal with a Fourier transform, typically using an FFT algorithm, most people are aware that we will obtain a result from 0 Hz(dc) to (Sample rate/2)Hz. It is also generally understood that the resultant output of the FFT is a complex signal shown either in modulus (amplitude) and phase form, or in real and imaginary form. The real part is often referred to as the in phase component, and the imaginary as the quadrature component.

"We've seen all kinds of crazy things being printed -- from bones to blood vessels -- and now you can add antique violins to that list. Music loving Radiologist Steven Sirr popped his into a CAT scanner to see what it was made of, then showed the results to a violin-making friend. Curiosity soon led them to scan everything from guitars to mandolins, so when the chance to take a peek inside a 307-year-old Stradivarius came up, how could they resist? 1000 scans later, the files were converted to 3D CAD format and another violin maker enlisted. Crucially, the images show the density of the wood all the way through, allowing a CNC machine to carve out copies of each section, with different woods used to match the differing densities. With all the parts in place and a lick of varnish, the replicas were complete. Sirr claims the copies sound "amazingly similar" to the original, but we are unsure if he plans to make it open-source" - via Engadget
