Mushroom fact of the week!
When wood is selectively decayed by specific white-rot fungi species the resulting material can be crafted into a myco-wood violin. These instruments have enhanced acoustic properties that are compared to the renowned Stradivarius family of string instruments.Ā
Staradivari were crafted with wood from trees that had been exposed to a ālittle ice ageā producing wood that was more chemically uniform and therefore produced better sound. This combined with the exceptional craftsmanship of Stradivari led to the instruments being so unique.
Mycowood violins offer musicians a higher quality instrument at a more affordable price.Ā
I recommend this article, if you scroll to the bottom there are two audio files you can play to compare the sound of a mycowood violin to a regular one
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) - Sonata No. 2 for Solo Violin in a-minor, BWV 1003, II. Fuga. Performed by Isabelle Faust, baroque violin.
This may or may not be coherent but I wish to ramble about a semi niche phenomenon in art and also show off my violin cause thatās basically my child (her name is Elizabeth). I donāt play much any more ā I can thank the horrors of a really competitive orchestra for that ā but I had it out since a string needed to be replaced.
For those of you who are not violinists, Stradivarius is like the Leonardo da Vinci of luthiers (instrument makers). To be clear, I do NOT have a 10 million dollar violin (one was sold at auction like this week or something). The label inside a violin is supposed to say who made it and when it was made but mine is maybe a 100 years old, not 300. Much like the Mona Lisa, artisans would copy master violins to learn/practice and a lot of the time they didnāt put their names on them. Thereās like a ton of really amazing copies of the Mona Lisa made by Leonardoās students which are really the only reason we know what the sketches and techniques may have looked like. Stradivarius was SUCH an incredible luthier that we literally donāt know some of the techniques he used anymore and the copies are still wonderful instruments.
Youād have to ask like an actual luthier how they know I donāt have a real Stradivarius, the guy who sold it to me was very confident about it and knew stuff about when imported violins started being labeled ā and like I said, real ones are worth so much he would not have undersold one that much. For a violin this nice I got a great price because the varnish on the back is permanently damaged (purely cosmetic).
