Eddie mouths off and gets jumped by Jason’s friends in town. He stumbles home late at night with his lip split open and one eye already swelling shut. Steve who’s freaking out and Eddie just dismisses it making Steve’s snap. “You don’t get to almost die and act like it’s fine!” “ You don’t get to decide what risks I take!” Eddie fires back. The doors slam. They storm off to opposite ends of the house.

Eddie finds him later in the bathroom, gripping the sink, hands trembling. And he steps in and just… holds him. “I’m sorry,” he breathes against Steve’s hair. “I’m here.”

Steve collapses, sobbing into the crook of Eddie’s neck, and Eddie just rocks him, murmuring over and over, “I’m here. I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere. Not again. I promise.”
