It's so easy to read this as him being such an attentive father, and in a way he is, but notice how reading these books are not HER interest, it's HIS. He knows her age down to the month without even thinking, but has no idea who she is or what she cares about.
He can correctly point out that Valencina is a violent fuck, but not how this affects her. He is very aware that Shiomi does some psychological horror shit to her from birth, and yet has done nothing about it beyond pointing it out.
I know that Rien being detached is his whole thing, and how this is both what makes him tragic and a massive dipshit, but what gets me is that this is often very romanticized, it's the point of putting this nostalgia bait on him and not the rest.
