my gift for an utena-themed secret santa I participated in on discord <3 decided to focus on these two because I’m genuinely kind of obsessed with what their relationship has to look like???
i love photograph motif in rgu because when miki thinks back to his sunlit garden he sees that place and his child self and the child kozue in it in grayscale, frozen forever in some outdated past moment, and what juri keeps in her locket is a still image of shiori. there are photographs of mamiya, but mikage distorts them in his mind when he rejects the true story of what happened. but photos are records of the narrative - not an inherently negative thing unless you substitute them for reality. in utena’s case, she has erased anthy entirely from her recollection of her childhood. when wakaba shows utena the bunch of photos she’d taken and anthy isn’t in a single one of them, utena’s deeply perturbed, subconsciously, that anthy could just not be represented in this record - leading directly to her wanting to take a picture with anthy, “suddenly” and for “no reason” (and also to her beginning to remember she had met anthy before in nauseous flashes). this is the picture that shows up in the post-credits, revealing not only that they have literally cut akio out of the picture but the crucial nature of a story that was hidden to us as the audience at the time but transpired and is there in the record nevertheless, that they were holding hands in that scene, just out of frame. & that love and that bond that is concealed by the framing of the show and is concealed by their narrative too finally shows up represented in the narrative. and theyre not the only ones historically, see below
i never thought about it before op but now… now i’m thinking… the Thing ™ about photography is that culturally it’s built up as the inherently more truthful and accurate counterpart to painting, but in reality it can be just as easily manipulated… meaning it’s extremely easy to stage a photograph, or take a photograph and then edit it, and use it to present a false version of reality as fact… and the way this interacts with rgu’s overall theme of stories and narratives and how easy it is to influence someone to believe in a certain version of reality by telling them a story about it! you’re right the way that anthy didn’t appear in the yearbook photos & the photo of him and anthy on akio’s table vs the photo of utena and anthy with akio cut out… taking control of the narrative of your own life!!

Someone on twitter pointed out that Anthy isn’t hurting Utena. I wanted to add her ripping out Utena’s hair, trying to drag Utena down/stop her (ambiguous.) And So I’d add a lock of hair to Anthy’s limp hand.
But I thought it would be too unnoticeable without the pink hair colour and, therefore, pointless. But I regret it now. Just imagine it’s there.

i feel like there are so many people who correctly identify what rgu is saying about the role of the prince being harmful, and how utena could never really help anthy through it because of how dehumanizing it is to view someone as a thing to be saved etc etc. but then immediately jump to the opposite extreme of "utena only views anthy as an object and not a human being and her desire to help people was always inherently selfish and bad" and it's just . you have to realize it's more complicated than that. surely.
it is absolutely true to say that anthy was the one to save herself in the end, but you cannot ignore the fact that utena played a very major role in allowing that to happen in the first place. it's about how being there for someone, being their friend, extending your hand in an offer of genuine connection, is what works where playing the savior does not. not that the only person you can rely on is yourself and that trying to help other people at all is futile at best and harmful at worst. that is in fact the exact opposite of what the show is trying to say. that's what akio says.
it does crack me up how utterly miserable akio is even though his circumstances are far more within his control than anyone else at ohtori. like he thinks children are annoyingly naive but he still chooses to be a school administrator. he thinks astronomy is boring but he still chooses to look at his little planetarium every night. every day akio wakes up and is like "ughhh i have to go sexually abuse some insipid-ass kids today 🙄 fuck my stupid baka life" and it's like well actually bud you don't have to do any of that. but ok
you are without a kingdom.
