Okay so we're at the point in comics where you can show the world trade center to establish that the comic takes place before 2001. Yeah 9/11 happened but don't worry about that here's Symbiote Spider-Man in the 80s
The thing that keeps me coming back to Venom comics is actually the character assassination of the 2000s. It's so fascinating to me. Every piece of canon, fanwork, and discussion has to reckon with it's legacy at some point, and that reckoning is different for everyone. Are you going to just pretend it didn't happen? Are you going to make vague handwavy gestures at it that don't go into details? Will you change around some details so it's more in-character? Was this actually your introduction to the character and it holds a fond place in your heart even though you understand it wasn't well written? Or do you think this was actually the most interesting version of Venom? What aspects of characterization do you accept or reject that follow from the 2000s? Why? Flash Thompson's Venom was a direct response to the 2000s, do you like it or dislike it? Do you see the cleansing from the symbiote hivemind in 2013 as a doyleist act of mercy to finally get characterization back on track, or as a problematic watsonion erasure of accountability? Do you think Eddie's dip into Catholic fundamentalism is an accurate response to however you decided he lost his other in the 2000s, or do you think it's more edgy bullshit? How do you write the symbiotes reaction to Flash's death in 2018? And I'm SURE there are more questions but I'm only on issue 16 of Cates run (loving it so far) so that's where I am.
I think that Flash's run saved it, though at the time it really wasn't what I wanted from a Venom book. Much better than what it was, though. I kind of enjoyed Eddie having a religious psychotic break. Obviously I felt bad for him but Spider Island was unintentionally hilarious. I also like seeing him rehash the religious trauma of his youth and the then current trauma of not being bonded to his Other. It wouldn't sit right with me if he were somehow just fine after all of that.
Honestly, the best thing to come of that era was our very good boy Toxin, and Carnage's absolute disgust and horror of being pregnant.
Eddie's religious psychotic break was definitely one of the things that made me obsessed with this period of Venom history. Oh, so this guy is creating a messiah/martyr complex around himself thinking he's the only one who can save the innocents and then compulsively deciding that anyone who questions him/gets in his way is irredeemably evil and therefore morally okay to kill? Just digging the hole of mistakes deeper by refusing to admit responsibility? Sorry, I thought we were trying to NOT be in-character right now
What won me over was that interview.
"Uh previous murdering vigilante Eddie Brock, is it true that you healed all of these people?"
"No, GOD healed them! But God can be VENGEFUL-"
"OK thanks Eddie, cut!"
This era really made it clear that both Eddie and symby need each other to mentally function. I hate how they can't even retcon it properly- the writers wanted to get rid of Eddie so they had symby abandon him because he had cancer- but symby could have easily cured that? Then when it was clear that fans were angry and didn't want to let Eddie go, they had to cure him some way. But this makes the future Cates retcon fall apart if you look at it too closely. Supposedly symby gave Eddie cancer to make him (more) codependent so that he wouldn't leave, so it makes no sense why they would do that and then leave Eddie. Everything about this era sucked ass, including art that was so ridiculously out of proportion that it was hard to even take the story seriously in parts.
Okay I lied not everything sucked, Eddie working at FEAST and becoming Aunt May's Special Little Guy was great. Just the two of them clicking. He's like "Yes, Mrs. Parker! " :D and then Peter has to listen to her be all Now don't you say anything bad about my Eddie, he's such a good boy!
I guess I didn't look at the Cates retcon that way, I more saw it as a Soft Personality retcon rather than a Actual Concrete Events retcon. Cates wants to have his cake and eat it too by trying to rewrite the characterization of symby in the 2000s as not a Evil Murder Monster, as all symbiotes were characterized around this time. But, for some reason, he doesn't want to outright say that what happened in the 2000s didn't actually happen. So it was always going to fall apart under scrutiny because it's not trying to be plot-based, it's trying to be themes-based. But if you think about it from a writers perspective, what the hell are you supposed to do in this situation? How are you supposed to make whatever the hell happened in the 2000s make sense? The short answer is, you can't. But the long answer is you can take one of the approaches I talked about way at the beginning of this post. Cates chooses a mix between changing some details to make it make more sense, and just vaguely handwaving at the problem in the hopes that people will try to make it make sense for themselves. I don't know why he did it this way and I can think of a million reasons (editorial, trying to please both the everything-is-canon people and the only-what-I-like-is-canon people at the same time, not being able to express his artistic vision as effectively as it was in his head, just wanting to be edgy) but for me, the end result is an impossible solution to an impossible problem. No one can truly fix the 2000s. But I love watching people try anyway
I really can't blame Cates for that situation, it is really impossible to fix without a lot of hand waving. It just sucks that it had to be that way in the first place, as I said someone should have known at the time that cancer is something that a symbiote can cure in its host. Symby even cured itself of cancer the first time it "died" pretty quickly (the Styx and Stone battle).
The retcon did give them the chance for some angst though. As open and loving as Eddie was with the symbiote in early years, he also had a manipulative habit of threatening to leave whenever the symbiote wasn't doing something that he wanted of it. I don't think that Eddie finally said that he wouldn't do that anymore until 2016 when he'd suffered his own unwanted separation. The symbiote has so much trauma to work through. I want them to both figure it out together.

Having a really long-term hyperfixation that has since faded is terrifying yes but it's also so embarrassing. Hi I used to think about Scrimblo Splungus 25/7. Yeah, for 2 years straight. Nah, I don't think about them anymore except for with a vague sense of melancholy as I recall how they used to make me feel. Anyways this new one, Blimpkins McGee? My hot take in comics is that comics about female heroes would be better when their adversary was a man.
Why?
Because nothing is more dangerous to a woman than a violent man.
Ares in Wonder Woman (2017). Kilgrave in Jessica Jones Season 1. Todd in She-Hulk.
Not enough women have men as their main adversary in comics themselves, at least not in a way that truly reflects women’s experiences.
I also think that a lot of stories about women in general ignore how complex female relationships are. Like it’s not all “girlhood” so many women genuinely hate each other for the crime of ALSO being a woman, and we need to talk about that.

me about a show i really like: the writers are so fucking stupid

But they know not that I was with them in that serpent, and that reed, and they knew not I gave them those relics for their own use. I wanted them to smoke it. Yet they threw it to the fire like fools, so I killed them both.

I'm still not over it, man.
In Cates run, the symbiote was bad and abusive to poor, sympathetic Eddie. In Ewing's run it's Eddie being awful and abusive to a timid, impressionable symbiote.
Like c'mon man. Both of these characters are freaking awful. That's why they started off as villains. They met at the worst point of their lives. Eddie was downright suicidal and the symbiote was pissed about being rejected. They were both filled to the brim with hatred and fed off each other.
But then they realized they could do good together (and the symbiote further learned they could be heroes after his stint with Flash). Are they great at it? Of course not. No one is 100% good and you don't get that way just by deciding it. It's something you work at, and these two need a lot of fucking work. It's why they're the Lethal Protector, not the caped crusader. I'm tired of writers throwing that dynamic aside to convince us this relationship is toxic and doomed to fail. First of all, it's fiction. Not every relationship has to be pure and wholesome. Second off, how many times have Eddie and the symbiote referred to each other as love or darling or outright stated how happy they are to be together?
I want to see more Venom struggling not to kill villains that would be better off dead (like how they were more than happy to throw Torment off a building). And throw in the kids they have to raise with that? Juggling all that life and heroism demands from them with a minimal success rate. It'd be so interesting. I mean one of their kids is always ready to throw himself into danger. The other is three steps away from being an evil scheming mastermind. And you know what? Let's take the time to explore Toxin's whole inferiority complex too; bout time the kid had a proper mentor anyway. One big happy symbiote family.
They're sitting on so much material and just absolutely refuse to do anything with it. Like I'm not opposed to the symbiote having a different host. I think it's good to breathe new life into a character every now and then. But by god don't just use it as an excuse to bash previous stories.
