POLICY

I LOVE CRITIQUE AS MUCH IF NOT MORE THAN I LOVE PRAISE. The annoying point about creating for me is that im pretty blind to myself so criticism helps me orient myself. I swear on my life Im being fr when I say I can take it.

That being said it should be constructive, even if its harsh. idm poor tone but if youre aimlessly insulting me there is very little to work with lol

Normal corrections like quote/spelling errors are also super appreciated I type too fast for my own good

Butcher’s Vanity places us entirely in Yi Xi’s perspective. Even when describing the words of other people, it’s told testimonially by Yi Xi (the ‘theys’ at the start. This is in contrast songs like ego renegade boy, where they might be given actual dialogue) This isn't that significant, other ffoley songs do this, but I think its neat so im including it

I think it’s worth noting that the victim’s perspective is mostly unconsidered aside from little snippets that get paved over and focus more on Yi Xi’s actions,

With the maybe-exception of this line, which is literally about her ignoring 'your' feelings and crushing 'your' ability to communicate them via violence. 'You' as a person do not matter to her, only that 'you' may be controlled/carved and consumed. This song is not about her love for 'you' in the medium of cannibalism. The song is about her love for cannibalism, fullstop.

Here's some of the lyrics of her being objectifying imo. I think the point of her not considering 'you' as a person is stronger, you can have a purely physical relationship and not objectify people (hello Hayden Rawdog) but I'd be a poor analyst without any quotes.

Yi Xi has an interesting relationship with her cannibalism in that she seemingly can't control it? It is unclear if this is because she doesn't want to control it or if it's like an addiction to her. I lean towards the former interpretation but the latter is cool too

A really neat, less spoken about part of the song is the religious undertones? The whole opening shows her being defined as a sinner by her community for her greed and gluttony (Presumably the non-cannibalistic kind because the mv has her chowin down a regular steak)

Contrasting with this, there's also her likening her cannibalism to a religious experience inof itself, notably in the climax of the song when she is speaking most passionately.

Which leaves the last line of the song with two meanings depending on which of these two religious experiences its applied to.

She DOES actually give a shit about what her community thinks about her, and her cannibalism is an impulse born out of repression that she feels she'll inevitably fall into again

I'm reading too far into it and the 'hopeless and in vain' part is just referencing how addictive eating people is to her

Another neat thing about her is that she talks about the cannibalism likes its an objectively good thing in general just because it is for her. Look at all these lines with her glazing it + talking about 'fixxing you' she's so gay for cannibalism /j (I had to remove a few for the img limit but my point stands)

Oh yeah theres also the commonly talked about visual references in the climax (https://flavorfoley.com/FFF/bv) for that. im just wondering... the fuck is she even eating...? is that herself??? because another thing Ive noticed is Yi Xi putting HERSELF in visual consumption metaphors. I don't really know what to interpret this as in the bigger picture but it Is A Thing

HERE COMES THE FUN PART.... HOW SHE RELATES TO OTHER SONGS!!!

Mai (Paparrazzi murder party) (yes the roundtables count) Is very interesting to compare with Yi Xi. She's kills out of pure, unbridled hate for T*to, with whom she has a very shallow relation to as a parasocial ex-fan. They both don't care about the person beneath their harm, but Mai's is a very personal hate where Yi Xi's love is much more general. Both of them are shamed for their behavior and brush it off as 'an intrinsic part of who they are' (though Mai is also rewarded for it, too. Thanks general public.) Feng Yi (weiward romance) has been put with Yi Xi in official art I think(?) They're fun. They're both in love with a concept rather than one single person (Weiward is about Feng Yi and her relationship with city life) and they both speak chinese. They're also both passionate in VERY different ways. I love u feng yi Miku (You’re Telling Me A SHRIMP Fried This Rice?!) HEY LET ME HIT YOU WITH A CRAZY SHIP IDEA /SRS THIS IS MY YI XI OTP OK. SIT DOWN. WE ARE GOING INTO THIS WITH THE ASSUMPTION THAT SHRIMPIKU'S DESIGN GOES FURTHER THAN OBSESSION WITH SHRIMP AND THAT SHE ACTUALLY IS ONE (her mouth is shrimp colored LET ME HAVE THIS) (this isnt analysis at all btw I just have. ship brainworms) hear me out. Shrimpiku being the only person who understands Yi Xi's cannibalistic tendancies because she's constantly offering shrimp, of which she is one, to the consumption of others. She would be totally chill with Yi Xi eating her... Except Shrimpiku is the one person Yi Xi WOULDN'T want to eat because she doesn't have human anatomy. Yi Xi finally having somebody who won't shame her, somebody she can connect with without immediately wanting to consume them. She can learn to express her gluttony in less murderous ways because Shrimpiku would probably LOVE serving her endless seas of food, cooking fanatic that she is.

ALSO THEYRE REFERENCED TOGETHER IN THE MV. YI XI IS EXPLICITLY SHOWN AFTER ALL THE TALK ABOUT THIS 'YOU' THAT SHRIMPIKU IS MADLY IN LOVE WITH. THEYRE CANON TO ME GOD DAMNIT

speaking more standalone, I think of it like. Wanting to live rather than survive. At least thats how I see it. In the first bits we get lines like this, where Nekomura is characterized as reckless, upset with her housecat life. She didn't value that peaceful life (potentially to a passive sui degree?) so she runs from it.

I find it interesting that in the first part of the song 'glow' is used both to describe 'headlights' and her identity (her embrace). Nekomura's identity hits her like a truck. 'satisfaction adorns and thrives throughout her next eight lives' suggests that she needed to go through a 'death' of some sort to live a furfilling life. It really reminds me of this albums sub-theme of breaking out of monotony. Static, spoken, and human are all trapped in it, erb and human break out, streetcat is freed. It's painful and dangerous, but its a life worth living.

By the time we get to the next part of the song, Nekomura is no longer seeking pain to dodge shame, but to find meaning, to be someone and embrace herself. I find it neat how her voice changes to be lighter and more emotional between these sections

This line is really neat because. Shrodinger's cat reference hehe It also calls back to the sort of split in identity found in this album after significant change

If I may be so bold as to connect Nekomura's eyepatch falling off as completing healing considering that it symbolized the starting healing in erb! YAY THEME PROGRESSION WOOOOOOOOOOOOO. I hope they can find satisfaction in a way that doesn't hurt someday :)

BONUS CONNECTION!! Rawdog and streetcat both use a desire for pain as a desire for connection, one with yourself and one with a partner. This parallels the way queen of venus and Human mirror eachother (finding humanity within yourself vs finding humanity within another)
