I’ve been looking at ways to create something using the the GPS traces from some of my races and settled upon something influenced by Pantone Swatches.
Although I’m not blessed with a lot of creative talent I’m fairly happy with what I managed to put together. I wanted something simple and minimalist and I think I’ve got it.
Finally splashed out on the official race photos from the 2017 Amsterdam marathon. These are the ones where I look vaguely photogenic...
Perhaps the reminder of the sprint finish will encourage me to get going again.
When a once in a lifetime post-doc position comes up that is actually related to your work but you don’t have all the essential skills they’re looking for…
It feels like a kick in the teeth.
If you can stop staring at the world's first road legal Aston Martin Vulcan you might just be able to spot me at work. It's a bit like a rather orange game of 'Where's Waldo?'...

Well that felt uncomfortable.
@amanda-healthyhappywhole : I’m pretty sure that I’m not amazing but thanks for the compliment. As for the other thing, well at least I’m now being honest about the impact it had on me. At the time, and ever since, I wasn’t able to really admit how much it hurt me.
I think that my decision at the time to not confront her with what I knew was probably ultimately the right one.
Whilst tidying/rationalising I found my old 60beat Bluetooth HRM chest strap monitor. I have no idea if it still works (I'd imagine it'll definitely need a new battery) but before I donate it to a charity shop does anyone who follows me want it for free? (I'll pay the postage).
2017, that was the year that...
I planned to compose a long, wordy and almost certainly highly pretentious recap of the year. Only to realise at the last minute that I’d be doing it for all the wrong reasons and I’d much rather try to write something more digestible.
So instead, 2017 was the year that...
I ran 1,231.2 miles.
I finally admitted to myself that these events from ages ago had partly broken me and have impacted upon my ability to be present in any relationship.
I committed to the Hansons Marathon Plan whilst attempting to finish writing my Phd Thesis.
I finally handed in a completed PhD Thesis just before...
I went to Rome to run my first marathon.
I successfully defended my thesis, subject to minor corrections, during my Viva.
I left my ‘job’ of looking after students living on campus after four years.
I though it would be a good idea to run my second marathon and commit to the Hansons Plan for the second time in a year.
I went to Amsterdam to run my second marathon and was amazed that @pascal73 turned up and cheered others and myself on.
I ran under my target time of 3h 30m for the marathon distance.
I handed in my corrected PhD Thesis.
I officially had the title of Doctor conferred upon me.
It has been a year when I’ve achieved quite a few things but those achievements have also meant that a lot of stuff has now come to an end. That’s left me with a sense of displacement and no real sense of what comes next.
I may have run 1,231.2 miles but there is an eerie sense that I am exactly where I began. I find my self in the same surroundings with many of the same people. The only thing that is changed is the perspective from which I look at things. Perhaps, hopefully even, that is enough to count as progress for now.
Happy New Year from the UK.
So far this year is totally different from the last...

Last one.
The struggle, and it definitely is a struggle at the moment, continues until the end of the year.
Maybe some kind of recap over the next few days?
It certainly doesn’t feel like its getting any easier at the moment.
Also currently fighting off the temptation to buy myself a Nintendo Switch in the sales... I think I’ve got enough self control to stop an impulse purchase.
Slowly, slowly. Start again.
Merry Christmas everyone. I hope you all have a peaceful and joyful day.
In the absence of any sort of running update please enjoy this photo of a newly born seal pup (a few hours old) and its mother from yesterday instead.

We don't do traditional Christmas trees...
Officially official. I get to wear a funny hat and silly gown in July 2018.
