Erwin was a character I strongly appreciated given his will to sacrificing his own and his soldiers' lives, his death really touched me though I was relieved that Armin still had a chance to reach his dream.

I didn't really like Levi until the uprising arc, I didn't understand his motivation until I watched No Regrets (I watched it after finishing s3p1). When he first appeared in the story I felt strange about his and Erwin's relationship: Erwin was the Commander but Levi acted freely around him, even disrespecting him, and after a couple of episodes he was "I'll obey Sir". Levi was close with Hanji but even closer with the Commander, and Erwin only spoke "as a peer" to Pixies and Zachary (sometimes) and Levi most of the time.

The "woah" moment was after the uprising arc: Erwin planning rts and Levi begging him to stay safe home, an absurd request tbh: Not Hanji, nor any other Squad Leader proposed anything like that; the Commander had to be there, because he's trusted and more importantly because he represents the SC. So, Levi? This not only was "odd" from a (I'll say) militaristic point of view, but Levi there acted really emotionally. At this point of the story we have seen his more emotional side, we've seen him angry and concerned, but not to this extent.

Then, rts. Levi giving Erwin a reassuring speach, making the choice on his behalf, commanding him to his death. And Erwin's relieved smile, his "Thank you". This was a peak moment, it showed complete trust (we also knew that Levi trusted Erwin completely, but the other way around is truly showed here), it showed the deep comprehension Levi has about the Commander, it showed Levi's ability to sacrifice his own feelings for what's best for humanity and Erwin.

The serum-bowl was just the culmination of it. It was the "emotional" side of Levi's previous logical choice. He wants to save Erwin so badly there, and not because he is the Commander, but because he didn't want him to die in the first place (Levi's egoistic feeling). He's about to give him the serum, the choice is made, and it is the best choice for humanity, the choice Hanji and other Commanders would make, the choice that will take Erwin back (and it's so clear that this is what Levi wants). But at the very end, Levi changes his mind, not out of any logical reason, or rational thought. He decides to let his friend rest because it'd be the best choice for Erwin and Erwin alone (or at least, in Levi's understanding of him).

Last but not least, Erwin's death affected Levi terribly. I usually dislike "revenge arc", but his was so well built and motivated that I appreciated it. His promise is the only fuel left to Levi to moves forward. It's a sad and heartbreaking end, but it puts emphasis on the importance of his relationship with Erwin.

Re-watching AoT gives you the possibility to focus on its nuances; it's a complex story and for people like me (not usually interested in the romance, but in the most dynamic and action side) it's easy to miss some details.

I personally like the absence of huge romantic sub-plot. I like how the relationships between the characters are described trough little details, ways of talking to each other, choices that can be read as ambiguous at some times. Or, this is true for the "adults", the 104th are kids and mostly act like kids "repressed" by their military role and the cruel circumstances of their world.

When it comes to Hanji, Miche, Moblit, Levi, Erwin, it's different. They are soldiers and put duty beyond their personal feelings. I love how their relationships are built. And I do consider Erwin and Levi relationship one of the strongest in AoT, and one of the most healthy too. Forgetting the hcs, the theories, or even what VAs, animators etc said, I think that it's undeniable the depth of their bond, and the fact that it is - at least - platonic love. To me it's clear as the sky that Levi loved Erwin (not necessarily in a sexual way) and it's clear that he was reciprocated, in a more subtle way because Erwin is a character literally broken by his guilt, split between his selfish side and his selfless one.

The rest of it is mostly hc, though some theories really are plausible and I love the fanon exploration of them trough fics and fanarts.

This long post just because I wanted to express what to me it's a fact and not a theory, that in the complex and not so easy identification and classification of what a relationship between two humans is, that between Erwin and Levi falls in the large range of "Love". And not the love and affection one usually has for a dear friend. It's deeper, it's familiar. It's the bond you have with someone you want to become family with. (Just to mention, Mikasa's "you're family" it's so powerful to me, it's a good choice of words that Eren misunderstood imo). This is why I don't feel the need (tough I like the fun, absolutely) of searching proofs and making up scenarios of a love story that is just there. I don't need Isayama to state that Levi and Erwin would have gotten married, circumstances permitting. They already have a strong, dedicated and wholesome bond that accompanied Erwin to his last, painful years and gave him peace at the very end; and complimentary, the same bond gave Levi hope and aim when he needed it and – sadly – affected him so badly that he lived so many years in grief (maybe all his remaining years). Tell me this is not what a loving relationship/marriage looks like.

Thank you so much for sharing this Anon ♡  There’s honestly very little I can add to this. You’ve expressed eloquently why Erwin and Levi’s relationship is so important and so compelling. Regardless of shipping, their relationship, and the bond of  trust they share, is pivotal to the story, particularly from the Uprising Arc onwards.

One of the things I’ve always loved about SnK, which you’ve touched on here, is that Isayama is actually very good at writing compelling, and compellingly complex, adult relationships. Like you said, we don’t need any other “proof” of the depth of Erwin and Levi’s relationship, it’s all there in black and white in the manga. The supplementary materials, the guidebooks, the interviews, the Smartpass stories all add colour but they don’t change the fundamental nature of their relationship. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this to me is what a deeply committed adult relationship looks like.  It needs no more elaboration.

I might be a little confused by your questions, but I like to talk about kkm so I’ll do it… but maybe it’s not what you were expecting to talk about so I invite you to continue the conversation. This is gonna be long xD 

Ah, and about your question about Wikipedia… well, there’s only one line per char and it’s pretty the basic. I don’t have anything to say about that. Also, the anime has its own canon and I don’t remember it, I’ll talk about stuff Takabayashi writes or the drama CDs we suppose GEG writes. =P

I haven’t been drawing lately, not because I’m blocked, but because I’m still depressed about the doujinshi. When I pick up my tablet, I start drawing right away. It’s not a block it’s just…. I’m still down. Sorry.  

What I can do is write a bit. This time it’s: Elvis songs.

Why Elvis’ songs?

I guess it all started with the Special Fanservice DVDs that had Connie’s actor singing “Love me Tender”. Conrad didn’t say it was ‘that song’ in the novels (Musuko -Gaiden 2), but he did say it was a song he had heard a while back, that it was a song from that country (America), that he didn’t know the lyrics well, but that the string instruments in the melody were used to reach people’s hearts. Love me tender has a guitar melody, so it fits. Also in Drama cd 8, Yuuri mentions a “Love me something” that song that his mom likes. Murata also refers to it as a lullaby.

The second time I started thinking about Elvis was with Drama CD 71, although its a drama cd, it contains a lot of novel related information. In this cd Conrad kept asking Yuuri: So you’re feeling lonely/lonesome, when Yuuri complained about Wolf not being in bed. And I was like wait, wasn’t there a song…? And there was! Are you Lonesome Tonight.

The third time I started thinking about Elvis was with the 2016 doujinshi ‘Love Letter’. And wouldn’t you know? There’s an Elvis song called precisely that.

Now I have to say, I have never been an Elvis fan. I even recall telling someone a long time ago: “His music is too old for me!” And here I am, a decade later listening to every Elvis song I can find. O’ fool me.

First off, lemme say that by no means I’m trying to say that every song 'fits’ perfectly with the maruma series plot. After all Elvis sang to women so there’s always gonna be the 'she’ in them. I’m just saying that there’s definietly some lines that can be drawn from certain songs to the plot.  You may argue that there are many songs that can be connected to maruma, but how about artists with lots of songs that connect to the plot?

So anyways, here I go: Let’s start with the three songs I mentioned before

Love me Tender: As I’ve said before the novels imply that this is the song he sings, and drama cd 8, a Murakenzu and arguably written by sensei herself, straight out spell the name.

Now, in the canon Conrad sings this song right after an emotional roller-coaster of not wanting to hold baby Yuuri and then he finally does to protect him and he’s overwhelmed (and so are you while reading it), and he kisses baby Yuuri’s forehead and tells him: It’s yours (as in Julia’s soul, as he’s letting go of her)

Are you lonesome tonight? - In CD 71 Conrad asks Yuuri if he’s lonely because Wolf isn’t in bed with him (Let us remember that Yuuri had already complained about Wolf not being in bed with him in Gaiden 4). I’m not implying Conrad is singing this to Yuuri, but that the song is a theme for where the Yuuram relationship is at at that time (Wolf disappearing and Yuuri being so lonely without him that he can’t stay in bed)

Notes: This song, heavens! Just imagine Yuuri from CD 71, aka post novel 17, missing Wolf and thinking he’s cheating. The first part talks about being lonely (Yuuri) missing someone, going back to the time when they kissed (implied in Seisa), called you sweethear (does Honey count? Cuz Yuuri calls him that). The second part, even better! Saying that he loved Wolf at first glance (canon af or what?). Saying that Wolf said the right things every time. Then that he acted strange (Wolf in Seisa, staying away from Yuu, punching him, and also post 17 hiding the secret). Then just doubting Wolf’s love, and feeling empty! This song as the theme of post nv. 17 is gold.

Notes: Yuuri pretty much says these same things in the doujinshi. “Oh, these are good to keep for when you’re apart from the ones you love” . And instead of kissing the letter he holds it close to his heart. So the theme of the song and the theme of the doujinshi are pretty much the same. (I won’t get into analyzing the doujinshi now, but in short, I do think the one Yuuri holds to his chest is the one that Conrad wrote about him, since all the others were about Greta. That doesn’t mean he loves Conrad, I can imagine he said something that would make Yuuri happy, but that’s that. And it doesn’t take away from the other 75% of the doujinshi where Yuuri’s pretty much confessing to Wolf as he does the same right to his face). One day I gotta analyze this douj.

Notes: Always on my mind in my analysis of seisa and prison we can see that Yuuri has never forgotten about “the incident”. He even calls Wolf my most important one (also used for people you love) in novel 17. So “Always on my mind” would pretty much describe Yuuri from novel 10-13. when he was away from Wolf, and even saw his face and got shivers about seeing him die even though he knew he was ok. Also he straight out said to Wolf, “I thought you hated me” (or I thought you didn’t love me anymore) in novel 14. We can’t know about the details of the song itself, but the main theme about Wolfram being in Yuuri’s mind I think is the same for yuuram in Seisa. (Seisa yuuram: 9|10|11|12|13|14|15| )

I loved all the songs and all the ideas and references about the canon. I also got my mind full of ideas to write the longest songfic I can think of hahahah. 

Also, while reading Suspicious Minds, I had a second interpretation for the third verse right away:

So, if an old friend I know Drops by to say hello Would I still see suspicion in your eyes?

You were talking about Yuuri’s jealousy here, but what I actually thought chronological about the first novels, I thought about Murata. When it saya “an old friend drops to say hello” I thought about a close friend of Yuuri’s, and Mura appears around Caloria, and Wolf is jealous but at this point he contains himself better (and also has this special attitude of remaining silent towards Mura because he’s the Daikenja). I know it’s not an old friend, in fact Yuu know him very little XD, but I wanted to add my 5 cents.

Oh and one of my favorite parts reading all these songs was the song Trouble, that canon angry Yuuri, yes, yes. When he explodes he’s just like that!

And so many other parts of these songs made me laugh, that one of Wolf POV with the bear hug, the raging horses, the tiger daddy, it was just to perfect to fit all the details ahaha. Every song made me think of the characters one way or another, it’s such a great inspiration. I’ll save many notes for that songfic XD

I heard something strange.

Because watching the Yuuram’s video in BILIBILI website (Like a YouTube of China) in this year, I retrieved the love of Wolfyu. (Yuuram is ok for me now. I think both of them are the same.) I read these novels(KKM) 14 years ago, but I didn’t want to find any other resource of KKM’s on the net then. I started to search them and met some Yuuram’s fans of China a few months ago. They told me some terrible things about the rumors of KKM. It really shocked me.

The Yuuram’s fans left the ship in China.

They knew Yuuram and loved them because of animate. They weren’t willing to read the original of KKM, because someone spread the rumors that Conyuu is canon in novels without any Yuuram. In this era of network development, those rumormongers spread not only this rumors but also other rumors of all of Maruma authority are Conyuu’s fans including author, painter and official staffs. It made an amount of Yuuram’s fans in China sad and broke their hearts. They didn’t know why Takabayashi sensei let Wolf got engaged to Yuuri. They thought It was unfair for Wolf after being told the canon is Conyuu. Those rumors made many of them so sad that they left this ship. Until now, many Yuuram’s fans of China believe those rumors. They also tell me the animate of KKM was ever popular in China until playing KKM 3rd season. But Wolfram’s fans were still many in that time. I know KKM 3rd season is not good. That’s one of the main reasons they left quickly. The others are those rumors.

Someone did sinister things to Yuuram.

I tell them the truth. They start to read the novels and manga. After reading those, they never believe rumors that Conyuu is canon. They say it’s incredible that they have been tricked for 12 years. It’s “two wrongs make a right”. Recently, we found the original of “Love Letter” and translated it. They were as mad as hell because seeing incomplete version in Chinese before. That lost some parts of Yuuram and misinterpreted of the original. It made like a Conyuu novel more. That someone translating it is a Conyuu’s fan. They told me that Conyuu’s fans not only spread the rumors but also attacked Yuuram’s fans.

The one: They even grabbed the Baidu (the search engine of China) personal webmaster of Wolf’s and destroyed it a few years ago. Yuuram’s fans found that and complained to Baidu Official Website. This matter was resolved.

The other: They impersonated Yuuram’s fans to attack themselves and took a screenshot. They spread that Yuuram’s fans were too extreme to get along with them with a false evidence.

I don’t know what to say that because it’s so preposterous and unbelievable. How crazy they were!

Now we do somethings.

My friends and I know that it’s not all of Conyuu’s fans like them. But the crazy people are more than rational ones’ very much. We think they are so jealous of “Royal Couple” that they do those terrible things.

Here, let me translate Kyou Kara Maou to English since apparently it’s so difficult to understand:

A guy travels to another world gets engaged to a former princess. The moment he sees her, he’s completely taken by her appearance. When they have to fight he tries to make her panties drop to win the match. He spends his inner monologues continuously talking about her eyes and beautiful skin and features. How she’s an angel. A wet angel when she jumps into water. He calls her cute. He loves how straightforward she is, how she always tells him the truth. He holds her hand while trapped in a cramped area. He tells her: Wait, wait! You don’t wanna have sex with a sweaty guy and gets in the shower, when she throws herself at him. THEY START SLEEPING TOGETHER. No explanation , just boom, princess decides to sleep with the guy. You start reading about it 3 months after the guy decides to not lock his door and let the princess sleep with him every night. Guy adopts a child, child calls princess mommy. Child is not allowed to sleep with her parents. Princess saves guy’s ass continuously. Guy curves all other girls (and guys, but who cares about that, right?). He takes princess out on adventures, where they always sleep together. Other people also comment, oh I see you sleep together on trips, too? Princess almost dies, causing guy to react in a way he never has before, even though many characters have ‘died’ around him before. The trauma hunts guy forever. When he accidentally hurts her, he feels like literal shit. And crawls around princess trying to cure her, asking her if she hates him. Princess replies of course not, I came to the ends of the world for you. Guys friend dies, he gets into a fight with best friend and is exhausted, finally begging to get in bed with princess, saying to her: I’m so glad I have you. I don’t have the strength to pretend anymore. Cut to black. Guy and princess fight like a married couple. Guy asks princess if she wants a divorce. Guy tells princess he’ll give her anything she wants. Guy, writes 26 things he likes the most about princess in front of her while she does the same. Guy asks princess if she’d cry if he wasn’t there.

Now let me ask you…. do you still need the guy to confess his love for the girl? Do you wonder if the guy likes the princess?

This is actually a very good question. I honestly believe that, inmost cases, nurture wins against nature. I’ll try to give my analysis ofeach case. Now, I just read a little about psychology for fun (and because I loveit), I’m not an expert and this is how I see things. It doesn’t mean, at all,that I am right.

Hisoka

The whole fandom agrees that something happened to Hisoka and verylikely made him into what he is today, but how much of this is connectedto the present is anyone’s guess. I think I mentioned how I noticed that Machi thought that Hisoka doesn’t talk about the “past” (being specific about it) and how hedisplays a desire to be in control of his own life, to the point he doesn’t open up to people (which seems to be more related to his personality ratherthan lifestyle). Also, note that Hisoka is part of the main characters (not the core ones, but important enough) and yet, nothing about his past has everbeen shown or mentioned. Even with the Spiders we at least had a briefflashback of Chrollo and some explanation about the Meteor City, which can give us some ideas of how things were for those who grew up there. Heck, Togashi has told us the background of characters that are not as much part of the main plot.

Killua and Illumi’s relationship is extremely important for both their character arcs. Moreover Killua has been deeply influenced by his older brother and both siblings have been influenced by their family situation.

Let’s note for example that both their powers make use of the high tolerance to pain they developed thanks to the training they were subjected since they were children:
