Ooh there's a question! Moist is definitely a high risk word, depending on how it's used, but I firmly believe that if you're a creative enough writer you can get away with just about anything*. ( I am obviously not that creative, because I did a word search on some of my longer fics and I have made no attempt to use "moist", though "moisture" does turn up a couple of times. 😅)

If you're using the word in a purely descriptive sense, I think it does lower the risk of cringe. So for example, if someone wipes their hand across their mouth they might leave a moist sheen on their cheek.

Having said that, if you're writing for fun, and your own enjoyment, don't let anything hold you back. Embrace the cringe! I should also add that some of the most beautiful and creative word use I've ever read has been written by authors who don't speak English as their first language. I particularly love it when imagery and word use from other languages seeps through in entirely new and unexpected ways.
