if he could, he would roll his eyes so much people would mistake him for a seer in the middle of a prophecy. he would have to double check with that one girl in slytherin if that was true or just dramatization. in this place---you could never tell. instead, what rufus did to his dear older sister was frown.

“most people would make fun of you for saying that,” rufus said finally but he knew that his sister sometimes put more exceptions on herself. “luckily, i’m hufflepuff so i guess that means something.”

‘‘ i am a very reliable person. and of course, i do expect the drink to be great. i’m personally rather fond of rum these days. ’’

‘‘ —no guarantee that my influence on my little brother will suffice, but i’ll try. who wouldn’t want a drink named after them? ’’

“i mean…i sure hoped you would?” rufus replied because. well, really. how do you respond in a Not Suspicious way? in his two thousand years of living he never found a way to respond to that. that line was questioning he was somewhat used to, between his dearly departed siblings and parents OR his still alive and just woken up dear sister. then again, it was about fifty years since he heard it from her.

had he been doing that? perhaps. but after their disastrous reunion, he didn’t expect to run into her again so soon. maybe he spilled some coffee in his escape but he also did not hear her speak to him in this little french-esque coffee place. the poor girl behind the counter looked concerned for him.

but he did not hear any indication from elena that she was speaking to him until of course, she reprimanded him and dammit. wasn’t he past this? two thousand years ago that tone of voice would had frozen him. just as it did now. 

(he was not the type to think so much of the past, only sometimes when the mood struck him. he left that to dion and april for the most part.)

he rolled his eyes as far as he could. that was better than just hexing his sister and running away before she could do anything about it, right? he sighed. she would run after him or worse---tell their mother. still. he was a petulant eleven year old and she was his (at the moment) annoying older sister.

It didn’t happen often that he returned from one of his heists to find he had a visitor. Usually he’d plan them during the winter when it was less likely that humans would venture too far into the wilderness but this time boredom and greed had gotten the better of him anyway. And while he’d been successful, he’d not enjoyed his little adventure as much as usual. Precisely because of something like this. He’d felt it clawing in the back of his mind; paranoia. But just because he was paranoid, didn’t mean nobody would try something while he was gone. Nathan checked his disguise for any flaws that might give him away before he carefully made his way towards the figure loitering around outside his home.

With narrowed eyes he inspected his visitor. The man munching on a mouthful of apple certainly looked harmless enough but Nate had seen him before. If his memory was correct, this guy was a fellow survivor. It eased his mind but lowering his guard before he knew what the other dragon wanted would be foolish.

“Good day. Have i kept you waiting? “ 

ah and there he was, the dragon. he did look hm, what was the word? alert? paranoid? oh well. rufus did just wait here instead of leaving and trying again but he also had the time to wait. and truthfully, all it took was eating one apple for the other to come home so that made it Much easier. he lobbed the apple core away from them and shrugged at the other dragon.

nearly a hundred years ago, rufus would not see any benefit to knowing a human sorcerer. they were magical, sure, but also human and he had a very real distaste for humans. however, knowing dion made an entirely new way for him to get More Shiny Objects when he “helped” him. and with one such Shiny Object in his pocket and an apple in his hand, he awaited the one dragon he could turn to for when it came with some nice relaxing plants.

(it was, essentially, dragon weed.)

even elena who might just be banned from calling herself a dragon if people knew how un-dragon-like her hoard was  ( and if she was not one of the last female dragons )  knew that dwarfen-made crafts fetched a high price at any supernatural market on the planet. probably on human markets, too, she guessed as she reminded herself of the quality and the fine craftsmanship dwarves were capable of. but just like her brother, she had little care for the monetary value of the pocket watch.  for her, its value was measured by the fondness she had for her brother, not for the purity of the metal.

‘‘ rufus, ’’ she chided gently as she shook her head at her younger brother. she vaguely recalled days when he had been naught but a hatchling — tiny, uncoordinated and a little lazy. she had scolded him often then as well, mostly because the world was not very kind to dragons that were unable to keep a low profile. she swallowed; she had always been very discreet  ( for someone who was as large as she was in her true form )  and it had done her no good. ‘‘ impersonating an amnesiac? that was your best idea in that situation?’’ she asked, the corners of her mouth being tugged upward. ‘‘ how undignified. and the poor sorcerer — did you ever tell him that you were, well, a dragon? ’’

at the familiar tone of her chiding, he grinned. when he was a younger dragon, barley a hatchling and much smaller in shape---he often got annoyed with it. but he could see the sense in it as he grew older and saw other dragons get killed or just...die. she was looking out for him, even back then. now, it was a comfort to hear from her. if his younger self heard him think that he’d be thoroughly disappointed. as it was now, he pulled a face at her.
