on a work call discussing a report that displays data at a regional level, and the person presenting is demonstrating how it works for the Dallas-Fort Worth region, so naturally all I can hear is
I must not respond to the bad take. Responding to the bad take is the mind-killer. Responding to the bad take is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face the bad take. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the bad take has gone there will be nothing. Only I (and my good takes) will remain.
I made a resolution to read more this year and we are not off to a great start! after two days of forcing myself through it, I finally decided to call it quits on The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store. the main plot intrigued me, but so much of the book is spent on other subplots and too many additional characters that it frankly was just feeling like a chore to read. it always feels like such a personal failing to DNF a book (even though I know itâs not), but why plod through something Iâm no longer enjoying?
BILâs and future SILâs engagement party is tomorrow. fortunately, itâs at a restaurant we really like. unfortunately, they are already griping about wedding-related expenses. the party tomorrow is open bar, but beer and wine only, because they âhave too many alcoholic friendsâ (direct quote from BIL) and if they were paying for liquor it would be too expensive for them because their friends would apparently go hog wild. who needs to get absolutely bombed at 2pm???
I also just canât stand when people complain that things theyâve freely chosen to do for their wedding are too expensive. like, theyâve already mentioned how many popular venues are out of their price range. you can just elope! or have a low-key ceremony without extraneous events! you actually donât have to do any of this!!!

a canon event for every oldest daughter is being told âyou would be a good lawyerâ
my future SIL, who I am not close with at all, asked me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding. which is a nice gesture, I guess, since C will surely end up in the wedding as his brotherâs groomsman. but also, I feel like she only asked me because Iâm her future BILâs wife, not because weâre close friends ourselves. it feels really weird, honestly. this is a woman who has never really shown up for me or C at all. like, every time we invite her to something she has something else going on (and sometimes those excuses are pretty flimsy!). I donât see her outside of family functions, so I really only see her like 2x/year.
itâs also worth mentioning that she herself ends up being a bridesmaid very often (she was in a sorority and remains close with her sorority sisters and ends up in a lot of their weddings). and every time Iâve heard her talk about being in one of their weddings, itâs been about how expensive and time-consuming it is to be a bridesmaid; all those long weekend bachelorette parties in Arizona or Nashville where you color-coordinate your outfits. so Iâm just like, why would I wanna go through all that for someone I can barely even call a friend?
I think Iâm going to have to grab dinner with her and just ask what her expectations are. if I can position as âI donât want to be unable to meet your expectations for what a bridesmaid should do,â I think that would be good. but of course, sheâll have to agree to hang out with me first! and she doesnât have a very good track record with that. the last time we hung out just the two of us was literally 2018.
The Venn diagram of Memist-Cloutist lefty internet take-farmers and people even somewhat involved in actual organizing is two separate circles. Come on.
âKill them with kindness.â Of course. Just make sure you do kill them.
not me having an actual meltdown re: the Parisian bedbugs as we prepare to leave for France on Wednesday!!!

made it to Chicago and drove directly to Kasama. I am not a person who believes in standing in line for anything, but this is our third trip to Chicago this year and this is the first time weâve had an opportunity to come on a weekday, so weâre giving it a go.
Iâm so glad we learned exactly nothing from the pandemic re: staying home when you feel unwell. thereâs such tremendous pressure to be in the office that many people come in when theyâre obviously feeling ill (coughing, sneezing, blowing their nose repeatedly, etc.).
âitâs not covid!â theyâll cheerfully say. well, great, but I donât want whatever the fuck it is you do have, either.
look, I am sure the bride and groom did not anticipate it being near 90 when they booked their historic, un-air conditioned venue for their wedding today. but also, maybe they should have??? September is very much still summer and frankly, no one has any business booking a venue without air conditioning for a wedding between like, May and October. Michigan is unpredictable when it comes to weather! itâs our thing!
apparently the venueâs solution here is to bring in industrial a/c units, but people who have previously attended weddings at this venue have said that even with the units, the place still hovers around 85 (itâs old and drafty with high ceilings, youâre not getting this building comfortable when itâs 80+ outside).
so please, if you are enjoying a/c somewhere, enjoy it a little extra for me.
i keep trying to quit being a bitch but they keep inventing new things for me to be a bitch at
