Knife in Her Hair, Blood on Her Fur
“Wednesday! Tyler’s attacking the school!” Enid’s voice cut across the lake, sharp and urgent.
Wednesday surfaced, water streaming from her dark hair, and cut through the lake towards the shore with powerful strokes. She stepped out onto the bank, grabbed her towel, and began patting her hair dry.
Enid stood frozen on the grass, eyes locked on her like a hawk. Her gaze traced the long, wet waves clinging to Wednesday’s shoulders, then began drifting lower…
“You are staring,” Wednesday said abruptly.
“Sorry!” Enid ducked her head, cheeks burning as she fixed her eyes on the dirt.
Wednesday sighed, pulling on a t-shirt and shorts over her bathing suit swiftly. “You do not have to stare at the floor. I doubt the dirt is more amusing...”
Enid’s blush deepened to a violent shade of pink. She lifted her head just as Wednesday slung her backpack over one shoulder, fully dressed and radiating impatience.
“Now, let us deal with the pest once and for all, before it becomes a bigger problem,” Wednesday announced but Enid didn’t move. “Your…your hair,” she muttered, pointing weakly.
“What about it?” Wednesday asked, already turning towards the path.
“You’re not gonna braid it?” Enid asked, incredulous.
Wednesday reached into her backpack and pulled out a large knife. In one fluid motion she twisted her damp hair around the blade and twisted it into a tight bun. “It is up. There is no time to waste.”
Enid blinked, “God, can this girl get any hotter?” She thought as Wednesday walked past her, pausing for a fraction of a second.
Her dark eyes narrowed staring at Enid with a knowing glint in them. “I could…but you might combust.”
Enid’s jaw dropped. “You heard that?”
“I am a psychic, Enid. My powers evolve.” Wednesday’s tone remained perfectly stoic. “Now, are you going to stand there gawking, or are you going to show that Hyde what a majestic alpha wolf can do?”
Enid nodded, bones already rippling beneath her skin as she shifted. Thick golden fur spilled over her body, claws flexing into the earth.
“Perfection,” Wednesday muttered to herself.
Enid shook out her massive frame and let out a howl that rattled the trees. She lowered her body, muscles coiled and ready. Wednesday climbed on without hesitation, fingers threading firmly into warm fur.
“I am still not fond of…riding you like this,” she stated dryly as Enid surged forward into a powerful sprint.
They reached Nevermore in minutes, bursting through the gates into chaos. Students screamed and scattered as Tyler’s massive Hyde tore through the quad, claws raking stone and shattering windows.
Enid didn’t hesitate. She launched forward, slamming into the creature with bone-jarring force.
Wednesday drew her knife mid-leap and struck him in the back, targeting tendons and pressure points while Enid’s jaws snapped and tore.
The fight was brutal but brief. Enid’s powerful paws pinned the Hyde long enough for Wednesday to drive her blade straight through the Hyde’s mouth and head…
The creature let out a final gurgling roar before going still.
Enid stepped back, chest heaving, her golden muzzle dripping with blood.
Silence fell over the quad.
Wednesday now stood a few feet away, knife still in hand, breathing steady despite the adrenaline.
Her gaze lingered on Enid…on the blood-streaked fur, the powerful lines of her shifted form, the way her golden eyes still burned with protective fury.
She stared with open, unguarded longing, dark eyes tracing every detail as if memorizing her.
Enid’s wolf form trembled faintly as it slowly transformed back into the bubbly teen.
Wednesday reached for her coat and draped it gently over Enid’s shoulders, preserving her modesty as the last traces of golden fur faded.
“Hey…” Enid mumbled softly.
The metallic scent of blood mixed with Wednesday’s familiar, intoxicating presence filled Enid’s nostrils.
Neither of them moved as the tension stretched taut, heavy with everything that had happened and everything they couldn’t dare say in the middle of the school grounds, with teachers and students beginning to emerge.
Enid locked eyes with her, a soft whine catching in her throat.
Wednesday’s fingers twitched at her side, as if fighting the urge to reach out and bury themselves in that blood-warmed hair. “Not here. Not yet.” She thought.
Wednesday finally broke the silence, voice low and steady. “Well done, alpha.”
Enid’s breath hitched. The praise sent a warm shiver down her spine, cutting through the lingering adrenaline.
She opened her mouth, searching for words that wouldn’t sound completely lovesick in front of half the school, but nothing came out.
Wednesday’s gaze flicked over Enid’s blood-speckled form, then back to her eyes. A faint, twitch pulled at the corner of her mouth. “I believe we both need to shower.”
Enid’s brain short-circuited. “We? Together?” Heat flooded her face as vivid images flashed through her mind…steam, tangled limbs, Wednesday’s dark hair slick against wet skin…
Her heart hammered so loudly she was sure Wednesday could hear it but before she could spiral any further, Wednesday added dryly, “Separately, of course. You smell like Hyde viscera, and I still have lake water in unfortunate places.”
Enid let out a breathless laugh, the thick tension cracking like thin ice. “Right. Yeah. Separately. Obviously.” She pulled Wednesday’s coat tighter around herself, cheeks still blazing. “But… thanks. For the coat. And the final stab.”
Wednesday gave a small satisfied nod, “Always, Enid. Though next time, I hope it is not a murderous ex coming for…us.”
Enid grinned despite herself, the familiar banter grounding her.
The quad was slowly filling with curious students and faculty, but for one lingering moment, it still felt like the two of them were the only ones there.
